this is a union town, and we think local hiring really only works when it is union jobs. we want to see a jobs plan that promotes opportunities for the local communities, businesses, and on any construction or construction-related activities. prevailing wage. training. what we want to do is provide benefits. that is what you get when you have local hiring. you get long-term career opportunities. when it comes to the local hiring hall, i think we do not have a full sense of where it applies, but i think we will get that when we come back in a month or see the draft and see how to expand the policies of local hire to non-construction, which a considerable -- which is a considerable part of the drums. we are dealing with folks that are funding this thing better into racing really big boats. they might not be into community hiring and why we go union, and this is why we create the leverage to do this. to insist whether it is a privately funded or publicly funded, whenever we build we have community standards. we have one month to do that. when we build, let's think about preva

last board meeting we honored karen bishop, one of our own, president of our local union here, representing our classified employees and today in the city they honored her. today is karen bishop day so kudos go out to her. and i want you to know that later on this evening we have a great presentation. we're going to talk a little bit about facilities and it's kind of interesting. this last week, you know, several board members, myself, we attended two hundredth anniversaries, schools, including glen park and last week, cleveland elementary school had their hundredth anniversary. tomorrow, jean parker is having their 100th anniversary and george washington high school is celebrating their 75th anniversary and we'll honor them this evening and when you look at that and you look at the presentation that will take place later on in the meeting about our facilities. david golden will update us on our facilities and when you have schools over 100 years old and you look at the work put into them to make sure kids feel valued when a walk into a school that's nice and clean, shiny, and looks marvelo

the local labor unions have always found a way to work with the city. they have found it this way, and working with us and freeing up their resources to help establish a mission neighborhood district center and having a nonprofit host their pre-apprenticeship program, they are providing financial resources as well as their apprenticeships rules directed program. we have done this the right way. i know everyone put a lot of valuable time into making this sunrise and putting all the funding together with the various departments coming together. what we have in store will cover 175 blocks in the city. the most gritty, i get the most sensitive ones that are commercial -- the most ready, yet the most sensitive ones that are commercial corridors in the city. they have already been through the hiring process. these individuals a proven they want to show up to work. it is a world-class economy, and to let folks know the folks who will be cleaning streets, removing stickers from polls, cleaning graffiti, i want you to know, you are part of a world- class city. y

unions were spending a lot of time and money in the local union halls in the big states telling rankile members vote for the president, support senator obama and they were reluctant to do so. some of them supported president clinton. some were hesitant because of the race issue. are you confident heading into 2012 that your rank and file will support this democratic president or will we see in places like michigan what we saw in the reagan days, blue collar reagan democrats helping the republicans? >> i think it's going to be different this time because of the attack on the -- on labor by the tea party. we had 100,000 people at a rally in madison, wisconsin. we had 50,000 people in ohio. we collected a million signatures in ohio. people realize what's going on, that they might have voted republican a small group of organized labor. but i think people are aware now that this group is coming after them. when they start talking about, you know, getting rid of social security, medicare, medicaid, rolling back collective bargaining in major states, i think this is -- this has been the wak

concession package agreed to buy the city's public safety unions, in particular, firefighters union, local 798, and the san francisco police officers association, and also included the management group's for police and fire. what you see before you is a package in which the unions, and these have been ratified by the members. the members have agreed to begin sharing in the cost of increased retirement contributions. this will be a first for the city and county of san francisco. it models the agreement reached between labor and the board of supervisors and the mayor's office in regard to an additional retirement cost- sharing that is going to the ballot. whether or not the measure passes, these employees will begin retirement contributions at a level of -- at a level of 3% additional to the amounts they're already paying. that will be a package which will produce between $20,000,000.30000000 dollars additional over the next two years. we have three moving pieces to this agreement. number one, we have a wage referral for each contract, and i will be excluded references to the unit one and 79
