we call the richmond district the new chinatown in the 1980's at that time. just being around the tremendous unique neighborhood, and discovering san francisco in the 1980's as i grew up, but i also have been very active as a community organizer. i worked in chinatown, and some first jobs also at the mental health center in the richmond area multi services in the 1980's, and i was also a staff are at the chinatown youth center -- i was also a staffer. a lot of my work has been supporting community empowerment, especially in an immigrant and people of color communities. most recently, i have been teaching at san francisco state. i ran the immigrant rights coalition in the city in the 1990's for several years. i'm also an immigration attorney, and a lot of my passion is supporting in power met for immigrant communities in the city as well. >> why did you choose to live in san francisco? supervisor mar: a lot of people bring this up, but is one of the most exciting, culturally diverse places in the world. learning about new cultures and people from different par

news in a way that we also did not expect. lots of cities in america have like a chinatown or even a little italy. orange county, california famously has its own little saigon. but new york city, new york city is the only city in america, i think, that can pull off simultaneously having a chinatown, also a little italy, also a little saigon, also a koreatown, also a little pakistan, a little tokyo, a little panama, a little albania, a little you name it. new york city is not only diverse in its population, new york city is international in a way that no other city in the world, let alone this country is. but still, when the united nations general assembly convenes in new york city, even in a city like new york, you feel it. and you feel it not just because of all the traffic that it causes but because there is a sudden international influx of world leaders and their entourages and their issues. even the protests change. new york city always has protests. but it's only when the u.n. is in session that we have something like this, an anti-iran, russia, china, syria protest being led by activists from

new record for the department. next week i will be joining several members of my staff, the juvenile probation department, the san francisco police department, and brothers against guns, the chinatown youth center, and mission neighborhood center in bringing 54 boys and girls to camp made thether. it has traditionally been a family camp and a senior camp. for the first time ever, we are bringing children from our neighborhoods who have never seen camp mather and never experienced the high sierras. the kids will be there next thursday, friday, and saturday. they will be returning sunday. the four-sunday will have hiking, swimming, sports, navigation exercises, and a talent show. this is a great example of the city family coming together. i want to give credit to mayor ed lee, who has also been a leader in making sure this event happened. we're very veryit. -- we are very excited about it. i want to turn to our regular feature, our monthly gm video of what is happening in our parks. >> cue the monitor. ♪ ♪ >> ♪ some sweet words in my ear ♪ [laughter] >> we got rides, activities, kids, food, fun. ♪ ♪ >> ♪ can't stand it no longer ♪ ♪ ♪ >> ♪ love me so hard i can't stand up ♪ ♪ ♪ >> ♪

chinatown. it really influenced me. we had a restaurant at the time, and at the time, we were always worried, watching the news, to see whetherr not the restaurant would be looted, whether or not it would go up in fire. that was something that was a big concern and worry for my family at the time. i remember thinking even at that age how important it was to consider what the economics were in communities, whether people had or felt that they had opportunities or did not have opportunities, and what role it was that government played in those outcomes. that is what really put me on the path to public policy. so i pursued public policy both at occidental college, where i went to school as an undergrad, and also you see-berkeley where i pursued public policy -- also you see -- also uc-berkeley. that was really what shape my interest in public policy. >> where you place yourself on the local political spectrum? the left or right? supervisor chu: i know a lot of folks want to put a person in the position where they call you left, progressive, moderate, whatever category that might be, and i think it really depends on the issue. ge

chinatown neighborhood was further necessitated by the 1989 loma prieta earthquake. project has been fiscally reviewed for years by the federal transportation authority under the new starts program. it has a fully committed funding plan and enjoys broad, federal, regional, and local support, including from the obama administration and senators feinstein, boxer, and leader pelosi here once opened, the light is projected to be the highest writer ship line in the city as it will serve the jobs housing quarter with the highest projected growth in the city, south of market, and the mission bay. first of your construction projects are nearly complete, and one of the largest -- a $230 million guideway tunnel contract is scheduled to begin later this month. by the way, it came in $13.2 million under the engineers estimates. now is the time to support the city's goal of enhancing our infrastructure system and building the need of capacity for our system. our mta will be submitting its final breath agreement request to the federal government before the end of this month, and we would be working diligently to finalize the details through the last months of this year. thank you very
