let's go live once again to ground zero and nbc's peter alexander. peter, i know you probably have a lot of security checkpoints to get through yourself getting to work. >> we did, and, in fact, today even early morning hours we experienced that security. there were those checkpoints you said on the west side highway throughout the city. you're going to see that tomorrow arks coringed to the police commissioner ray kelly. there will be thousands of additional security officers here around ground zero, but he made it very clear that this is not the only potential target in this city. other places like grand central station, harold square station, penn station all seeing additional security over the course of the days ahead and with the u.s.s. new york, that's one of the ships just docked not far from where we are here. they're actually scuba divers that are going around that area securing it as well. all the precautions being taken in advance of what is really going to be a historic ceremony tomorrow. the president of the united states, barack obama, h

. >> nbc's peter alexander is live at ground zero this morning. pete, how rebous is the visible security there right now? >> craig, i had a chance to visit the new york city mayor michael bloomberg a short time ago. she said this is the way we do things in new york these days. there is a difference as we arrive upon the tenth anniversary of 9/11. the police officers throughout this city have now extended their shifts by about four hours through this anniversary especially putting an extra 1,000 officers on the ground at any given time right now. their priority among other things is increased security checks at the bridges and tunnels throughout the city as they use bomb sniffing dogs, radiation detection devices as well as focussing on illegally parked cars. if your car is parked illegally they don't want to take my chances. you really get a sense of that added security right now. it's only going to increase as they truch it up over the next several days as well. one other point the mayor has made, he made it clear that he doesn't want this site t

nbc's peter alexander joins me live from ground zero. around 20% of americans know someone that was hurt or killed on 9/11, as we remember back to that time. are there a lot of people gathering around the site today? >> there are, richard. not only individuals from the united states but really from around the world today. just the process of getting here was a challenge as so many people flooded this area to be a part of this anniversary and pay their respects to those who lost their lives on that day now almost ten years ago. a short time ago roughly 9:03 this morning, the same time the second tower was hit by a plane on 9/11, this site behind us here at ground zero simply came to a halt. more than 3,500 workers here stopped what they were doing. there was a memt oment of silen. they unfurled that flag. you can see on one world trade center behind us, freedom tower, this is a building that's been growing. you can see part of the dramatic change that exists here over the last ten years. carries the weight of history. at the memorial site

and now live to new york with peter alexander, and what is the reaction there? >> well, we had a chance the speak to the mayor here in new york, and he said this is the new new york, and we are used to, but it is different with the days leading up to the 9/11 anniversary. these are the pictures of west and liberty and right there at the world trade center site. you can see the police officers, additional officers here. among the changes over the course of the next several days that we learned from the mayor, there are 12-hour police shifts instead of the normal eight-hour shiftings and roughly one-third more officers on the streets at any given time, and added vehicle checkpoints and bomb sweeps in parking garages and they will immediately toe illegally parked cars at a higher rate than in the past. and also police cars with scanners to scan the license plates of cars passing by to make sure there is no suspicious activity that they need to be aware of and what we are aware of is convoys of police to go through specific areas to make their presence known and the
