my grandfather came to san francisco from sicily. he got his very first job at eight years old lighting street lamps at fisherman's wharf. he eventually bought himself a boat and by the time of the great earthquake in 1906, he had several fishing boats. when the fire began to destroy san francisco, he loaded neighbors on to the bow. it was on that last boat he was introduced to my grandmother as he led her into the fishing boat for safety. my grandfather met my grandmother, and together, they tried to rebuild a city. san francisco has given my family so much opportunity and i would like to make sure our city continues to be a city of opportunity for everyone. san francisco is a place for history and we honor our past. we have also always looked forward to the future. what was once a gold rush town -- we became a center of finance and business, and when technology became a driving industry in the world, we became a center for people looking to launch new companies and new ideas. as a supervisor, i've focused on a future and saw the ne

if we do, families will stay here and move to san francisco and jobs will come to san francisco. my moment of obligation when i knew i had to run was not to circumvent the only way to achieve this was that the mayor makes it a high level priority. it takes a community wide effort to improve the public education system. i am a proponent of high-quality schools. i cannot tell you how many kids as young as seven, who i've met alone on the minutes of bus, going across town to get to their public school. we're not supposed to leave children at home alone at the age of 12. that is not acceptable children are traveling across town by themselves to get to school. we have to create committees schools where we bring resources to support children and families, social work, mental- health care, after-school programs, locate them on the site of schools. we have to support the business community. as the innovation capital of the world, we are the shoemaker kids with no shoes, we are not compiling any of the great education. we need to reach out through our philanthropic community to support th

we need to do a lot in san francisco to encourage young people and young families to stay in san francisco. i think we are missing out on a lot of our diversity when young families leave our city. we need to do all we can to be mindful of the needs of young families in the city. we mentioned housing. schools are a big deal. but also being able to be flexible with transportation and children. >> what is happening with crime in your district? give me your thoughts on how you think the police are doing with respect to crime in your district? >> i think we are very fortunate in district two. we have a number of great police captains that oversee the stations that touched district two. richmond and northern are the two major police stations that touched the district. we do have a lot of crime in district 2. both crimes against individuals but also against merchants along our merchant corridors. chestnut. union in particular has been hit. fillmore and sacramento. it is a big deal. we also have the break-ins. we need to be very mindful that people keep their iphones and laptops out of sight. but
