kristen, good morning. >> reporter: good evening, brian.you know not everyone liked the auto bailout but the workers at this gm plant did. they say it saved this plant and also saved about 1,700 jobs. the auto bailout really one of the few economic success stories of this administration can point to. now earlier today, south korean president lee donned a detroit tigers cap as both seemed to be on a campaign style tour of the plant. in addition to the bailout, the leaders touted the trade agreements, which congress passed this week. today the president called it a win for the united states and for south korea. now some labor leaders have said that the agreements could cost jobs, but the administration projects that it could actually add about 70,000 new jobs. now this is the president's ninth visit to the politically important state of michigan. the unemployment rate here is in double digits. the president's approval rating is really dropping, so it could be quite a challenge for him to win this state in 2012, which he did carry back in 2008

nbc's kristen welker is at the white house to tell us more. kristen? >> reporter: good evening, lester. in addition to foreign policy, republican candidates were also fighting amongst themselves in iowa this weekend, over who is the most socially conservative. meantime, secretary of state hillary clinton had tough words for iran. making the rounds on the morning talk shows, secretary of state hillary clinton cast president obama as a leader on foreign policy. >> president obama has passed with flying colors every leadership challenge. >> reporter: and she smacked down republican claims that pulling all u.s. troops out of iraq would leave the country vulnerable to iran. >> iran would be badly miscalculating if they did not look at the entire region and all of our presence in many countries in the region. >> reporter: but republicans kept up their steady stream of attacks, calling the president's foreign policy politically driven. >> i would argue that iraq and afghanistan is being run out of chicago, not washington. >> reporter: with the gop presidentia

kristen, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. here outside the scene of the massacre, the memorial and the grief are both growing. this is a community still in shock as we learn more about who the victims were and also what may have sent the alleged gunman over the edge. in a small town like seal beach, almost everyone knows someone touched by the tragedy. >> he was just a great guy. >> reporter: like mary stearns, a 30-year client of salon owner randy fannin, one of eight killed yesterday when a gunman entered his crowded salon and opened fire. fannin's wife escaped, but at a terrible cost. she saw him get shot? >> yeah. i don't know how she's going to live with that. >> reporter: police say 41-year-old scott dekraai was in full body armor with multiple weapons when he entered the salon. minutes after the shooting he surrendered peacefully. while police won't discuss a motive his ex-wife michelle was a stylist here. friends say she was also one of the victims and in a custody battle with dekraai over their 8-year-old son. john k

joining us now is nbc's kristen welker at the white house.out what's happening. kristen, the details are saying there's been over 200 drug shortages of some kind of the most commonly used drugs in hospitals. this executive order tries to alleviate some of that problem. can you tells more? >> reporter: that's right. hi, there, richard. well, the aim of this executive order is to try to cut back on some of those shortages. here's what it does. it orders the fda to do a couple of things, to broaden it reporting of possible shortages. also, to really increase its review of drugs that are in the process of being manufactured to try to speed up the manufacturing process. and also to step up its communication with the justice the department to try to cut down on price gouging. now, some analysts have looked at this and other presidential actions that have been taken in the past week and says it's really not going to have a huge impact. and that, of course, has caused republicans to say, this is really the president playing politics. the white house

tell us about that, kristen. >> hi, chuck. that's right. tleem heme of this trip, according to the white house, the president is focusing on his jobs bill. as you know, it didn't pass the senate last week and now get broken up into bits and pieces. the president will push for a $35 billion to put teachers and first responders back to work. so, that will sort of be the aim. there will be six stops along the way throughout north carolina and virginia and he'll speak to some folks at schools, community colleges and also a fire station, just to name a few. then he will make a few unplanned stops so he can get up close and personal with the people here. of course, all this underlines how important north carolina and virginia really are to the president's re-election strategy. no democrat had won these two states for decades until president obama did it back in 2008, in part, thanks to an influx of people who moved here from the north. professionals, minority voters here. now, some of those younger independent voters have really soured on preside

good morning kristen. >> what happened overnight is crews were working to repair the road. all the vibration from the cars is not so much a road collapse just a very large pothole. you can't see it from where i'm standing right now. it is way up there on the southbound lanes of 29. it is described as being a hole being three feet and six feet wide. nobody was injured by this hole, but several cars got flat tires from it. it certainly caused issues if a few drivers this morning. what we are seeing right now is one of the southbound lanes is shutdown. the other one is open. as traffic picks up this morning it will likely slow down. the good news is monika was saying all the northbound lanes are open. that will be not impacting traffic too much. in terms of south capital street, the whole roadway that goes underneath 295 has been closed for about an hour earlier this morning. you can see it is now back open. the whole problem is there was actually debris falling through that big hole onto the roadway. the fear was it could land on top of some car. we know that is not a danger.

. >>> kristen fisher is live outside the courthouse in rockville. good morning. >> reporter: good morning michael. excuse me. this is the first day of what is expected to be a nearly two week-long, very high profile murder trial here in rockville. now the defendant is, of course, 28-year-old britney norwood. she is accused of killing her coworker inside that bethesda store. the victim, 30-year-old jane that murray. norwood beat murray to death after murray found stolen merchandise in norwood's bag. now prosecutors say that norwood then tried to cover-up the murder by telling police that she, too, was the victim. that both of the women were attacked inside of the store and that they were attacked by two masked men. clearly she has since been charged with first degree murder. police believe that story was completely a fabrication, a cover-up. that murder the alleged cover- up and subsequent arrest really just rocked the bethesda community, which is going to make it hard for both the prosecution and the defense to settle on a 12-member jury panel. and
