cnn's susan candiotti is in new york. this is where the movement began, with occupy wall street. and the protesters of occupy wall street, susan, have now entered times square in manhattan. what's happening there right now? >> reporter: well -- [ inaudible ] people are here in times square. inside -- [ inaudible ] a pedestrian area that covers several blocks in times square. you have members of occupy wall street setting up shop. they are chanting slogans. they are holding up signs. their message against corporate greed. along with the protester. they're yelling slogans like "they got bailed out, we got sold out." this is one of many demonstrations in the city. certainly here and also at wall street, where that original campsite set up 29 days ago. here, this is where the action is. the main action is -- as a lot of tourists and other people out on a saturday night are screaming along, packed in, that's where i am, shoulder to shoulder along the sidewalks, running along the pedestrian square, separated from metal barricades where those protesters are right now in times square. >>

thank you, susan candiotti. we saw the radar next to her, and let's talk about that with cnn's jacqui jeras, our meteorologist. so 1.8 million people without power and we are told that three people are dead now because of the storm. >> yes, the danger is tonight into tomorrow morning unfortunately. the height of the storm is over with in places like washington, d.c. and baltimore and philadelphia and new york maybe until the midnight until it gets better, but we have a long ways to go for parts of new england as the heavy snow continues to come down and the winds are going to stay very, very strong. this map will show you until 10:00 in the morning, southern new england will dry up and then we will see maine drying up. better conditions are expected, but the snowfall totals are extremely impressive. a foot and a half in plainfield, massachusetts. and pennsylvania, 16 inches and in parts of maryland 11.5. you will continue to see the problems with the temperatures freezing things tonight, but tomorrow, temperatur

susan candiotti in the financial district that has become the center of the protest. san, it's now entering the third week. there's been -- this is a criticism by some -- there's been no coherent message r. they getting any better organized now? >> reporter: it doesn't seem to be the case, but they have a pretty good size crowd here in this public park that's been taken over by protesters for, going on three weeks now, as you said. if you look over that you can see a lot of people but it has been quiet. there have been no marchs. coming in this direction, you can see it has been set up. there are, in fact, mattresses. people are taking rests here. if you look at this direction, people with signs protesting. all kinds of things a high price of gas, lack of health insurance, education cuts, they want more union participation out here but no one seems to mind there isn't anyone in charge here. they actually like it that way. if you spin over this way you will often hear a drum beat during the day, guitars and saxaphones playing, leading to an interesting atmosphere here,

thank you very much, susan candiotti, in new york city. we appreciate it. >>> let's get to our meteorologist in-house, jacqui jeras in the cnn severe weather center. we saw the snow still falling where chad is, very wet in new york city. where is it heading now? >> well, it's moving northeast. it's going to continue to affect these areas tonight. the storm is intensifying. so the winds are going to be picking up. and our snowfall rates are going to be increasings, especially in the interior here. you get up into the higher elevations, that's where the worst of the snowfall totals have been and will continue to be. the coastal areas still just getting rain right now. but winds could be gusting as much as 50 or 60 miles per hour. as for the snowfall with those kind of winds, there is still a lot of leaves on the trees. so all of that snow collects on that surface, that adds to the weight to bend down those big tree branches and also brings down power lines. that's why we have tens of thousands of people without power in pennsylvania, new yor

we're in times square, new york, with susan candiotti. so i understand about 70 people arrested, about 40, 42 people in times square. tell us what happened. >> reporter: well, at this hour, it's pretty calm here in times square. there are some protesters in the distance behind me, over my shoulder. but earlier tonight and around 8:00, there were, as you mentioned, 42 people arrested mainly on one of the streets that shoots off times square here, it's 46th street, heading east as police were moving people off the street because they said they wanted to clear that street and that intersection. they said for the most part all the protesters tonight were orderly, but those 42 people were not. they said they were not following orders to get themselves off the street and off the sidewalk and some protesters all along were chanting, the world is watching, the world is watching, wall street, wall street, and some of them urged fellow protesters to sit down. they did, on the street and on the sidewalk, and that's when police moved in, some of them

susan candiotti, nathanks so mu and chad before you, susan. let's check with in jacqui jeras in the weather center. what kind of accumulation are we talking about? >> it was a biggie for a lot of people. record breaking snowfall. some of the records were just a couple inches and a few of those records were a couple of feet. as we take a look at this map here on google earth, it really shows you who got the snow and who didn't and where the heaviest snow accumulation corridor was from new hampshire, vermont, stretching all the way down into parts of pennsylvania. western mass, western connecticut. that's where the worst of it certainly has been. as we take a look at the visible satellite, i love showing this. this is eye candy for meteorologists. take a look at this. do you see this across parts of pennsylvania? up into new york and up on into the northeast? that's snow. visible satellite is like taking a picture. everything that's white pops up as white. it's starting to fade out as the sun starts to go down as well. here's the numbers. number

susan candiotti is there. susan, why did police change their minds? were they afraid a confrontation could get ugly? >> well, it's impossible to say exactly what changed their minds, however, we got word a few hours ago, literally, about three hours ago at 6:00 in the morning that there had been some sort of an agreement by the people who own this park. it's not a public park and they decided. they told the police it was no longer necessary for them to come over. what we're hearing now as we show you a bit of the park is that according to new york's mayor bloompberiberg. he said the property owners were getting some sort of threatening calls and threats of some kind and he's still trying to pin down what those alleged threats were. i spoke to the people who run this protest or the people for "occupy wall street" and they don't know anything from officials or anyone else making any threats to the people who run this park. nevertheless, huge number of people that were here at the park, they were prepared to sit down, lock arms and not let anyone interfe

thanks so much, susan candiotti. all across the northeast, power crews and residents checking out the mess made by that storm. chad myers is talking to some of them in york, pennsylvania, so chad, what are they saying to you? >> they are telling me that this is not as bad as it was during hurricane irene, but more trees came down. in irene it was just a big flood. this is all the way downtown. one tree completely destroyed by the light that came down, the snow that came down. it was very heavy with all of this. the snow had so much moisture in it, go up to the top of the tree and see there's very little left at all. we'll be helping out cleaning up the rest of this for the rest of the night. one of the churches in town. power crews were out, watched them help put lines back up. as soon as the lines were back up, they said they were getting another call. lines were coming back down somewhere else. another thing that happened here was that when the leaves got heavy with the snow, it came down, the leaves came down, bro

pardon me. >> open up the hole. >> susan candiotti joins us from the park. the office of emergency management in new york sent out a release saying they wanted everyone out of parks because of snow possibly falling, heavy snow on trees. but was the park part of that? >> it doesn't seem to apply to that. they call that an advisory and recommendation for most city parks. but here, this is a privately owned park. the main worry is that a lot of the parks here obviously have very old trees with heavy branches. fortunately, at this one, these seem to be fairly young trees. so if the branches fell, if they fell at all, i don't think they would do as much damage as they would in a lot of other parks here in the city that have been around far longer than this one. for now, very few people walking around here, don. most protesters are hunkered down in their tents for now. >> looks like they're staying put, as well. thank you very much, susan, we appreciate it. we saw that radar there next to susan. let's talk about that now with jacqui jeras, our meteorologist here.

susan candiotti is live in lower manhattan. n, just about a half hour from now is the deadline. what's the mood out there right now? >> reporter: well, it's more crowded than i've ever seen and we have been out at this hour quite a few times. everyone is usually dense. they're not now. the park is full of people. there are a fairly large -- there is a fairly large contingent of police officers out here, but people are up and about and awake and feeling i guess it would be safe to say excited and hopeful and certainly seem like they're not intending to go anywhere, not if they can help it. >> i know the protesters are trying to clean up the park on their own. would that be enough for mayor bloomberg and the city? >> reporter: that's right and they have been cleaning off and on all night. a few more joined the group about midnight or so. of course, we had a pretty hard rainstorm in the overnight hours and so, in fact, there's a -- russell simmons has tweeted hip-hop mogul saying he is offering to pay as much as it takes to go get

susan candiotti is in new york where they are gathering. first of all, help us understand.l the grievances that people are airing? >> reporter: well, it depends on how long you have, fred. there are so many of them. that's because there are all kinds of people who are represented here today. you have people who are employed, people that have lost their jobs, some that are part time. people that are students, people that have a number of different grievances. broadly based, corporate greed, as you mentioned. people who are protesting the decline of civil liberties. you have one group of people over here, teachers, who are sitting here grading papers. they are saying they are here to illustrate all the budget cuts that they have to deal with. there is so much work to do and fewer teachers to do that work. so a lot of different ideas are represented here this day. so it's really hard to focus on just one theme. certainly, it is hard to focus on any solution. take a look. their message, "end corporate greed" they say is killing america's economy. >> solidarity forever. >> repor

susan candiotti joins us live now in lower manhattan. susan, the cleaning is off for now. so what is it like down there? what's the tone? >> reporter: well, the tone is, they're saying people power won the day and ruled the day for them. in the predawn hours, and you can see now it's still very busy, before the sun came up, we got word that officials were backing down, that the people from this park agreed to not ask the city and the police department to move everyone out of here so they could clean the park. protesters feel it's just a vealed attemveal ed -- a veiled attempt to evict everyone. they got help from an arguably unexpected quarter, city officials, a lot of them politicians kept calling the mayor overnight and saying, don't do this. don't do this. it won't look good for the city. if you use force to move people from the park. that is what happened. now, so far we've had this morning, fred, just about a dozen people, a little more than that, who have been involved in scuffles and arrested by police. so all that is still being sorted out. interestingly, not every

back to you. >> susan candiotti in new york. thank you very much. >>> we're seeing major air travel, slowdowns across the region. new york and philadelphia among hardest hit. richard was stranded aboard a jet blue flight in hartford, could not kochbl i think he is off the plane now. how is it going? >> reporter: after four hours and more trapped on this plane on the ground at bradley international airport, i'm off the plane. 100 passengers got off, not knowing if we will take off. there are several planes here. many cancellations at bradley international. our jet blue flight from syracuse to jfk, new york, almost made it in. but it was diverted at the last minute and the crew said the ground navigational gear may have broke. i always hear of these travel horror stories and you hope one day you're not one of those stories. and so a flight that would normally take 45 minutes has taken so far seven hours. and we don't know yet if we'll be taking off. a remarkably calm and good humored group of passengers. if it was a different set
