if you can see the sign across the street that says oakland commune, that's the beginning of the tent city they have set up. that's the beginning of the steps at the plaza. it goes all the way across the plaza and towards city hall. and this is really a large encampment. they have palettes set up there as sort of a sidewalk. they havekitchen. they have a garden. at this point you can hear people banging on garbage cans and shouting. kind of hard to hear what they're saying. but again more and more police officers are coming. so quite a tense scene this morning. >> i think we'll stay with you live as we watch the police officers surrounding the plaza. we watch them drive down in a long convoy of white vans to the center of oakland near city hall where they are confronting protesters. the mayor said they will not allow overnight camping. they warned the protesters several times before this weekend. we have christie smith live on the scene. >> reporter: one of the things i want to mention is the city is upset because it went beyond camping. they were getting complaints of drug use and harassi

she is very upset she said inside this little tent city they've been feeding each other, taking care each other. exercising their first amendment rights and she can't believe police are breaking this up. she is frustrated saying this city can't afford libraries yet can afford police action like this. this show of force was frustrating to her. she upset. they are emotional. they've been here for a couple of weeks this is very important to them. this tent city has become something they are very proud of. she said we were taking care of people, feeding people. she was upset, i think we have video of the live pictures we were showing you moments ago of the man who was being arrested. he was resisting. they had a few officers on him that upset her as well. she said he's a man who has been out here trying to exercise his first amendment right why is he being carried out by so many officers? she was very upset and emotional. she was using a lot of curse words. i would interview her, but she was not editing herself appropriately for television. she was near tears. a lot of emotion out here.

. >>> in san jose, police moved in to clear out the occupy tent city outside city hall overnight. there were only a few people there. at about 4:00 this morning, two people were arrested, another cited and released. state officials say the protest is creating public and health hazards with the buildup of trash and the bathroom habits of some of the protesters out in the open. the majority of the tent city was cleared out thursday. >>> city of oakland took the day to remember one of the biggest disasters in the bay area. a fire storm that ripped through the oakland and berkeley hills 20 years ago. people gathered at the rock ridge bart station, where 2000 hand-painted tiles on a wall reflect on the impact of the fire. that event was followed by a ceremony at the gateway emergency preparedness exhibit center. those who witnessed the fire talked about the experience. >> that was my career fire, by far the largest incident i've ever responded to. all the risks that we took that day, it gives you a real feeling of pride. >> that fire killed 25 people and destroyed more than 3000 homes.

as you can see, we still have a tent city. folks are still in place.ng to be the case for up to four months. as the deadline approached yesterday, u.s. park police went to organizers and asked for a private meeting. in that meeting the police told them they could stay here in the plaza again for up to four months so long as the protesters shared the space with other groups that come here to the city for other events. there's one such event that's this weekend. the martin luther king memorial dedication. apparently, there's some events down here. again, they've asked the protesters to be respectful and to share the space with folks coming down for that event. as you can see, the protesters have not been moved out. many were fearful there would be arrests yesterday. that did not happen. we're waiting for official word from the national park service. they're the folks who actually give the permits here yesterday. it was a holiday. we're waiting to here the official word has been cut. we're told by police they can stay up to four months. back to you in the

are physical tents it very much if you go down to occupy boston it very much has a feeling of a tent city or like a hooverville it's a visual that's very striking that makes you really feel that like generally if things do not change a lot more people are going to be living in tents it's something that's very very striking so. they ran out of space at dewey square and so what happened was some of the members of occupy boston went and they occupied another part which is the rose kennedy greenway they started another tent city there and over when i was there was i close to forty tents before the cops came. and the mayor and the police force told them that if they didn't take eight the second park that they were going to come and they were going to arrest them then what happened was they they were good on their word around one thirty in the morning. countless police officers came from all different directions they sat surrounded the park on all four sides while while the people the protesters in the park had locked arms and pretty much formed a human chain a human blockade to try to save the
