the police moved in and showed a huge force before they enter the plaza. they started from the outside and moved in. as they entered the outside of the plaza, they began taking down sleeping tents. protesters were arrested without incident. they took down tents as they went through. a huge show of force inside the walls of this morning. i would estimate well over a couple hundred officers from multiple agencies. i saw officers from as far away as a back a bill, of fremont, alameda county. it seems like the protesters new they were coming. so they did not minutes, every tent was down and protesters arrested. >>mark: protesters who voluntarily left were standing around outside, are they still there? >>jackie: when i arrived at 4:00 a.m., there were a group of protesters outside of the police lines. some people left the plaza earlier or had been informed that the police were ready to move in and they decided to come down but were not allowed in. there are still pockets of protesters outside of the area right now. there is a long line of protesters being blocke

looking across the street across broadway towards the plaza those are the sheriffs who have been here all day. the city says the plaza will be reopened to the public and demonstrators but only after it's cleaned up. the mayor was not here in the city today. we're told he's traveling in washington, d.c. trying to get grant money for the port of oakland except for a handful of protesters we're told most have been cited and released and the city is bagging it up and tagging it and demonstrators can't blame it from the city starting this afternoon. in oakland abc 7 news. >> and thank you very much. overnight, police arrested four more occupy san jose prot yofrts for illegal camping and excited -- cited three others. one person is on top of a large wall outside city hall saying he will not come down until police stop removing campers from the plaza protesters have been passing food to him in a plastic bag he hoists to the top using a rope. police say they're going to wait for him to come down because of safety concerns. >> army investigating the death of a soldier from lake county. he died

earlier today we give make close-up look at what the plaza look like right now. >>reporter: the barricade has come down blocking access in oakland only to be replaced by this. a new fence in the grassy area that was recently the location that was occupied by occupy protesters. this sign says the grassy area will be closed until further notice to allow restoration and healing. as you can see the grass is discolored in some places and soaked and muddy and others. some protesters say blocking access to the grass around the plaza will not stop their movement. >> there are plenty of public parks in oakland. >>reporter: just to recap, the mayor is speaking as we speak out here giving a press conference about all that has happened with the last 24 hours. i am getting instant updates on my phone. she hopes to open the plaza this evening it is open, but the grass section is not. as to if it will open or not we do not know. protesters are scheduled to be back at 6:00 p.m. this evening. the mayor says that opd is investigating reports of excessive force. we will be out here

on july 27, 1999, the port commission adopts a resolution naming the plaza immediately west of the ferry building as harry bridges plaza. the commission's resolution also called for a monument recognizing harry bridges and to direct a project sponsored to return to this project for approval of the monument design. since then, the committee has selected an artist and developed a design for the monument, as you can see here. harry bridges is widely considered one of america's great labor leaders because of his commitment to labor issues, being at the forefront for racial equality, civil liberties, and world peace, and he played a prominent role in the san francisco general strike, which brought labor issue to the forefront across the country. he also served on this commission from 1970 to 1982. the sculpture will be a bronze, a 12 foot tall likeness of harry bridges. i believe this is a 50% scale model, but we are looking at 81% sculpture -- a 200% sculpture in real life. the sculpture would stand on top of a square 4 foot tall granite base with embedded text informing visitors of his acco

. >>> it is quiet at the frank ogawa plaza this morning. but protestors could return now at this hour. >> the call came after a long day of clashes between police and protestors. >> you will be removed by force if necessary. >> officers gave warnings to the crowds in the streets and then they fired tear gas multiple times to disperse hundreds of protestors. anne makovec is in downtown oakland this morning, where it's a very different scene, isn't it? >> reporter: oh, certainly. there's only fog in the air right now no tear gas. and only about a dozen protestors remaining here outside of frank ogawa plaza. 14th street and broadway, this is the intersection you're looking at right now. you can see the police barricades still in place and a few protestors walking around. but at this point, it appears that the police outnumber the protestors. certainly a different scene than the past 24 hours. 102 people were arrested and police fired five rounds of tear gas at the protestors. people were scrambling and gasping for air including some of our cbs
