wendy walsh read a suicide letter from her 13-year-old son.he was in sacramento to meet with an assemblyman that authored a new state law that requires school districts in california to implement anti-harassment policies. if the law had existed last year her son might still be alive. >> they would have taken my complaint seriously and that they did not and it did cause our family a big tragedy with him taking his life. >> a federal investigation found the school district failed to respond appropriately to complaints of being bullied l bullied. >> school officials are trying a new approach to truancy. education reporter lyanne melendez explains the new plan to keep them in class. >> reporter: san francisco's burton academic high school is focusing on ninth graders, identified as habitual truants. they analyzed the school data and found those with a grade point average of less than 2.0 that showed up for class only 85% of the time was very likely to drop out of high school. >> students with these early warning indicators had only a graduation ra

wendy walsh and a regular on this show. dr. wendy, i know what you're going to say.ter study shows corporal punishment does not work and can cause some serious psychological damage. but you know people say, spare the rod, spoil the child. how do you control a child that won't listen? >> there are two things that research has shown, don. that really do work. simple, positive rewards. not buying material things. giving them rewards like your time. my own daughter who's really challenged because she has asperger's syndrome just earned a sleepover party for getting dressed for three weeks in a row. positive rewards. one-on-one time with mommy or daddy is a great thing to earn. second, removal of pleasures. not giving negative consequence that is include punishment and physical abuse. so these kids are so addicted to tech, i find once they're old enough to have technology like a cell phone or computer, all you do is remove it. and, boy, they behave so well. >> okay, just for people who are old school like me -- what this guy did was clearly wrong. what about a spanking? y

wendy walsh, a human behavior expert. ndy, people are lining up, they want to see him dead lying there with his son. is this feeding a sense of revenge, perhaps? >> it may be to some degree. but these people have been oppressed for so long, i'm sure many of them don't know what to believe. to have this visual proof that he is dead is probably something that many, many people need. and it's helping them create some closure. >> one thing i'm fascinated by is here's this tyrant of 42 years who in the end is begging for his life, asking the people to show mercy which arguably he never showed them. what's that about? >> that's called a survival instinct. that happens in the last minutes or hours when there's a knife or gun put to us, any human being, at that stage. but we have to remember, he may have been a tyrant but he kept a very well-oiled machine in organization. and it's estimated that up to 20% of the population were his informants or employees. so he was hoping to appeal to potentially one of those. >> let's go to anot

wendy walsh, human behavior expert, co-host on "the doctors" now and a prend to mfriend to me.uly. what i would think, not being an expert as you are, that maybe this will bring closure to cooper in terms of losing some of the guilt that it wasn't this little boy's fault. what do you think? >> you know, as traumatic as it might be to throw out that pitch and go to the stadium again, the time to do it is when he's young, before he's developed years of fears or anxiety or a kind of post traumatic stress disorder around stadiums, groups of people. i'm sure his family has worked closely with therapists to help him through the grieving process and this is a final stage of desensitizization. traumatic, yes, but the time to do it is now, not when he's 35. >> i can't imagine the guilt from the baseball player who threw up the pitch to the dad. this is a tragic accident. there it is. look at that hug. brings tears to my eyes. it's so sad. i think you're right. it's a good time now before he gets too old, the little boy. >> exactly. prevent him from developing fears around stadiums, arou
