welcome to our wonderful city hall.th celebration here in our wonderful city of san francisco. no many of you know, too, there has been a lot of spotlight on our arab-american countries. people are wondering what it is that is going on. the whole world is struggling to find out what the right thing to think and do and understand is. here in san francisco, we have a tradition, especially when it comes to immigrants -- comes to emigrants, who they are, where they come from, and what they want to do. that's the beauty of being here in san francisco. it happened to my heritage. it's happened to many, many generations of visitors who come to this city. now it's happening for your generations of arab americans. it's our pleasure, and as the mayor of our great city -- i know it is felt at the board of supervisors that we welcome and celebrate our diversity. we do our best to understand, to dialogue, and to create more understanding. we celebrate that. that is our strength in san francisco. that's why we have these wonderful ce

he's got plenty to say. >> new york, god bless them, wonderful city, but they have no connection to the program and certainly no connection to nasa. so why would the shurt elle go there? it's like putting the statue of liberty in omaha. >> reporter: poe wants bidding reopened. nasa on the other hand is satisfied with intrepid's new plan. >> i don't tell them how to suck eggs. they gave us a plan, told us they would have the money, gave us a schedule and everything. as far as i know, they're on schedule, and so i trust them that they're going to deliver what they said. >> reporter: but texans say they have the history. the first words uttered when man landed on the moon, not "new york" but -- >> houston, the eagle has landed. >> so "atlantis" will stay in florida, "endeavour" goues out o the science center in los angeles and "discovery" will go to the smithsonian and "enterprise" goes to new york, if everything stays the way it's supposed to right now. >> i know you say on paper it's a done deal. you know nasa better than anyone. is there any chance that they would change their minds? >>

and look at what i have to say about our wonderful city. thank you for being here tonight. [applause] >> my great grandparents came here from hawaii in 1890. they settled in at bernal heights, and they stayed here until 1906, until the earthquake. during world war ii, they were in terms with 100,000 other japanese-americans, my parents and grandparents, they lost everything. they were there for four years. when i learned about it, i am -- i was angry. but it taught me not to be better, to get an education, and to stand up for what i believe. that is what we need in san francisco right now. we need a mayor who is going to stand up for what he or she believes, to make sure that is the people's interests to come first. a lot of people can talk about, yes, i want to change this or change that. but i set out to fix the city's fiscal crisis two years ago. it was not easy. i knew that my days would be angry at me. and it was something that needed to be done. that is why gathered signatures, 50,000, tries to fix the biggest fiscal crisis, which is now the number-one issue in this e

city together. that's a wonderful thing. know the rent board, for example, that whole tension between our landlord and tenants and making sure it's a well balanced thing. and our environment, to make sure we're not only doing the new things, but working with all of our agencies to get the best in energy efficiency and in our look at reducing our co-2 emissions right down to our civil service commission and as you know, we lost a very long-term civil servant in donald casper. we welcome in our new commissioner, as well. on our human rights commission, we have a lot of work to do. and i know that in keeping our city together, we have to also continue to fight obstacles of discrimination but also welcome in in a proper way small businesses and challenges to all of the obstacles being created that are new to us. i want to welcome in our entertainment commissioners because they have that very, very fine balance that has to do with creating new opportunities of entertainment and dealing with our young community as well as our musi

they are truly part of the fabric of our wonderful city. the small business assistance center, on a nearly daily basis, sees new entrepreneurs hoping to start their own restaurant in the city. it is a difficult undertaking, but today, as demonstrated by the success of those being recognized before us, we see that hard work does not go unrecognized. to both potential entrepreneurs and existing restaurant tours, -- existing restauranteurs, we are here to help you. i think the supervisors for these recognitions. i join our fellow small business commissioners in thinking these business persons for their contributions to the vitality of san francisco. thank you for allowing us to speak today. thank you. sure those people weren't discriminated against as they tried to survive and find help in this wonderful city that we have. public works, you're amazing, you working with our real estate department in finding ways to make sure we have the best approach to this and we are also working with our private contractors. i know turner construction is doing the construction management here, working closely with our bureau of architecture and engineering to make sure this is done on time, within budget. that's the mantra of using federal funds these days. you better be on time. better be on budget. and we also better make sure that when we do this, we reach out to our local vendors and make sure they're participating in this economic times, struggling. we have a 25% goal to do this correctly. so this renovation is important for all of those different levels but the most important thing is that we have more modern offices for our aids epidemic research. because i know, i know that in our lifetimes, barbara, we're going to find fantastic breakthroughs with your leadership, the leadership of the commissio

i have to say, certainly, as you know already with the contributions to our wonderful city and with the owner of zen desk, in their one night of amassing $5 million to build a children's hospital. we're looking at people joining the great names of levi's and rosenbergs and charles schwab and others to be the new generation to add to our philanthropic corporate citizenship peter i am excited about that. new small businesses along a central market, local -- huckleberry bicycles, at san francisco camera work, deluxe burger is, and off the grid. they are opening towards this year with the help of our office of economic development. the adjoining arts district, blackrock, llc, you know that is the parent company for burning man. they moved their central offices to central market. they provided 20-foot street sculptures in the area. you have seen the man walked around them. i have. very exciting. we're continuing arts in the storefront for the second year. we're moving in on u.n. plaza the arts market and central parts market. looking forward, we have a central market economic strategies that
