>>> welcome to "beyond the headlines", i'm cheryl jennings. today we're talking about carbon monoxide and the dangers of this colorless, odorless, gas. carbon monoxide is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in america killing 400 and injuring more than 20,000 every year. i can't see it or smell it or taste carbon monoxide. but at high levels it can kill in just minutes. california joined 25 other states requiring many of us to have a carbon monoxide detector in our home. here is can ashley with the story. >> in 2009, 78-year-old died in his apartment from carbon monoxide poisoning. he might have survived but neighbors ignored the warning, a carbon monoxide detector going off in an empty fourth floor apartment. >> carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, tastedless gas. >> the fire marshal says headaches, shortness of breath, dizziness are warning signs. 700 people are treated for it every year and 40 people die from it. without a carbon monoxide detector like this one, you might not know that you are being poisoned. >> they shoul

i'm cheryl jennings. today we're talking about the decline of physical education and the importance of it in our schools. the state board of education uses the test called the physical gram for students. it's divided into six different fitness areas, according to the california department of education, only 29% of fifth graders meet the requirements of all six areas of physical fitness. that number is shocking. however, there is one local asset we tha we have. dr. amy chow, three-time olympic gold medalist pediatrician. she is now a pediatrician at california medical association. >> thank you so much for having me. >> i understand, you were only three when you were interested in? >> my mother was looking for an activity for me to do. she got me in ballet. but they don't take children until they are five. >> cheryl: how did you do? >> it depended when i was little it was maybe once or twice a week activity. but i got better and better, and then i would spend five or six hours a day in the gym. >> after sch

. >>> and i'm cheryl jennings. religious leaders in oakland will gather for a rally to support protesters after last night's fatal shooting. a man in his 20s identified as alex was shot to death during an argument between two groups. alex was not staying at the encampment but frequently stopped by. amy hollyfield joins us with this morning's breakfast and another major development. >> reporter: now it is looking like if oakland police have to forcefully move protesters the mutual aid they had the last time won't be there, that's because of decisions made by mayor jean quan. 14 outside agencies helped oakland police when they forcefully removed protesters from frank ogawa plaza last month. because city officials allowed the campers back, law enforcement officials say the situation doesn't qualify for mutual aid any more. >> mutual aid is designed for emergencies. this is no longer an emergency when you have allowed people to cap out. >> reporter: the alameda county sheriff's office is in charge of cord naying mutual
