kennedy. >>> we start with the super committee's failure to reach a deal today. howard fineman is "the huffing post" director and political analyst and joe williams, correspondent from politico. earlier tonight it looked like the president was trapped. it looked like the conservative republicans, the hawks, if you will, on capitol hill were going to say yeah we couldn't get a deal on the $1.2 trillion and deficit reduction but we're going to save the defense department anyway and make the president look like the dove. >> that was i think their plan, as a matter of fact, the leaders of the armed services committee and the pentagon lobby was really hard at work on that already, but what the president came out and did, i think, was a very shrewd move politically and tactically. he said, unh-uh. he said "no easy off-ramps." if you try that on me i promise you now i will veto it. the only thing i will sign is another bill and you decide how to frame it, put taxes in it, put budget restorations for pentagon in it, do whatever you want but it's got to add up to $1.2 trillion. >> no slip sliding away. this is firm literature. i have to say the p

joe m. los angeles, we are talking about adlai stevenson. >> i want to jump ahead to the 1960's. what you thought his relationship with the kennedys was.as nominated in that convention and because of that, there were still feelings with jack kennedy. what would have happened if he had been made secretary of state? with this situation in vietnam have been different? >> let's start with richard norton smith. >> that is a very wide subjects. it is certainly true that it was not a warm relationship between the kennedys and governor stevenson. in 1956, he had done something no one else had done. he had thrown at the nomination for the vice presidency opened. he left the convention decide. jack kennedy came with then an eyebrow -- with an eyebrow of winning the nomination. in the end, -- it introduced into the country, paved the way for his campaign in 1960. it is also safe to say that the way in which gov. stevenson -- one of the distinguished visitors that came to this house was jack kennedy. he very much wanted adlai stevenson's endorsements, who did not get it. if he was ever going to be secretary of state, i think that possibility went

you know, joe klein had a piece in "time" magazine, and he said it's pure public service. and your book, the jack kennedyis, you write, war forges you forever. and that's what jack kennedy said. and it just gives you a love of your country that you want to give back. you don't care about democrat or republican. you just want to do right by your brothers and sisters in arms and also by your neighbors and your country. >> tammy, you said something -- the president actually said something, i think you can follow up on it today, which was so important. he didn't say, treat veterans like victims, do them a favor. he said the community leaders, local mayors and people like that, county commissioners, bring these people into your leadership force. these are natural leaders. urge them to join you in leadership. not to be supplicants, but to be leaders. i thought it was so bracing that he did that today. he didn't do the usual, give them a break. he said, bring them into the ranks of leadership. >> absolutely. and our military men and women, from the first day you show up at basic training, you're getting leaders

joe paterno canceled his press conference. his former assistant jerry sandusky is charged with molesting eight boys, some of them in penn state's agent electric facilities. sheld sheldon kennedyulted by his coach over a five-year period. sheldon is on skype from alberta, canada, to talk about his case and what he thinks about this penn state case. i must applaud you for coming forward and trying to help people to understand what that must be like. can you tell us your story? >> yeah, i can. i know the fear that's involved in something like this is tremendous. you've got such a power and balance with authority and the issues themselves. the issues themselves carry a lot of fear in society. a lot of times it's misunderstood and people don't recognize the damage that sexual abuse, abuse, bullying has on our young people. as we've seen many times recently that it kills people. i think maybe we're starting to recognize that. the fear is somewhat overwhe overwhelming. >> sheldon, you say it was very difficult to make friends, that life was in your words lonely, a living hell and you changed that. how did you do that? i think we've lost -- unfortunately we've lost sheldon. hopefully
