it seems everyone is talking about the squeezed middle-class in america and the middle-class is feeling is particularly hard. do you think this shift in demographics is permanent? >> the forces at work here globally, income inequality in america is reaching levels we have not seen since the gilded age. the rise of the emerging- market, you have a technological displacement of jobs that has already hollowed out the working class and it will be starting to have an effect on white collar jobs, these trends are not going away anytime soon. at the same time, we have not buffered them as well as your past in terms of trying to promote equality. the problem is really magnified here. >> when i went and spoke to rich and jennifer in pennsylvania, they say they don't feel as well-off as their parents. most americans would be shocked to learn about what you wrote -- that there is more social mobility in many european countries than there is in the united states. >> its hard to imagine a bigger hit to the american dream, this idea that you can do better than your parents, that you would have an eas
