mr. davern, wagner said not to. to take direct steps that could help identify where natalie wood was. had she fallen off the boat. that's what you're saying. >> yes, we didn't take any steps to see if we could locate her. >> do you have any evidence, any information to say that there was foul play, that this was murder, that he was responsible for her being pushed off the boat? or was it a matter of him simply saying we're not going to look too hard? >> i think it was a matter of we're not going to look too hard. we're not going to turn on the search light, we're not going to notify anybody right at the moment. >> you never told the police that at the time, did you? >> no. >> why not? >> well, because we all had -- we all had our story to tell the homicide detectives at the time. and that's the story i told. >> so you agreed with robert wagner to tell a story he wanted you to tell and not the truth. >> yes. >> why should anyone believe you now, when you didn't tell the truth then? >> well, that time, my life was jus

mr. davern, i have a question here.before any authorities were contacted, do you regret that you didn't do more to search for natalie wood that evening? >> yes, i do regret. it was like a mistake that i made -- i do regret that, yes, i do. really. >> and finally, we know that you lied to investigators before about this. how do we know you're not lying to us now? >> well, when you say i lied to them before just the three of us, we weren't telling the whole truth. and i have no reason to lie about anything anyway now. >> okay. well, we appreciate your story. we appreciate as well your account of this. we'll be hearing a lot more about this case. there's actually a news conference by the l.a. sheriff's office. that is happening at 2:00 p.m. eastern so we'll get a lot more information about this developing story. mr. davern, that wasn't my question. was he responsible for her death? i'm not asking about your story. >> yes, i would say so, yes. >> how so? >> i really don't want to get involved in -- >> well, how can you come on national television, sir, and accuse him of something like that but not back it up? >> well, that's up to the investigators. >> so i mean pretty clear implication there from the captain of the yacht that he believes robert wagner was more involved in natalie's death than we were led to believe. i have to stress that the los angeles county sheriff's department stressed today publicly that robert wagner is not a suspect. so there remains a very confusing picture. >> right. >> and of course the veracity of this captain's testimony must be called into question simply because he hasn't said this before and he's published books about this. >> he's been trying to say something for quite a number of years. he used to call me quite frequently about ten years after natalie passed. and tell me bits and pieces in a very agitated manner, very upset, cry

mr. davern, that wasn't my question. was he responsible for her death?out your story. >> yes, i would say so, yes. >> david, this is going to be used in journalism school someday. what i call an uncooperative witness. he wanted to get something out. what do you think was the minimum amount of information he sought to put out? here he is agreeing to be on television. what did he want to say? he didn't say much except you pushed him to say he believes wagner is somehow responsible. >> somehow responsible and when i laid it out for him, i said, do you think he pushed her over or do you think it's basically he was responsible by not doing much to look for her when he knew that she was in some sort of trouble or went missing and that he was so worried -- he writes about in the book is that wagner says to him, according to davern, he was so worried about his public image, they didn't want to make a huge deal of the search and rescue effort because it would make him look bad at the time. davern in his own memoir talked about expressing remorse of what happened.
