heather kovar explains why. >> reporter: hosni mubarak was brought to the courthouse in an ambulance then wheeled into his trial on a hospital stretcher. outside, egyptians protested, demanding the death penalty for their former leader. riot police surrounded the court in cairo and armored cars were on stand-by. mubarak face charges in the death of hundreds of protestors killed during an uprising that led to his ousting earlier this year. he's also charged with abuse of power. the 83-year-old has a heart condition and has been under arrest in a hospital since april. his two sons who are in prison, also face charges. antiand pro mubarak protestors led chants as the trial resumed wednesday after a three-month delay. the hearing lasted only a few hours before the judge adjourned the trial again until next week. the case could drag on for years. many of mubarak's senior aides also facing charges. but many egyptians hope the trial will heal scars. they helped the country move forward after a year of political turmoil. heather kovar, cbs news. >> lawyers for some of the families of the dea

heather kovar with more on the alleged shooter's criminal history. >> reporter: people ran screaming through the streets about 55 miles east of brussels. they were trying to escape a man throwing grenades and firing a gun in the town square. this witness says he says he saw people lying on the ground bleeding and crying. the bus stop exploded says this man. police say the 33-year-old attacker threw grenades toward a bus stop and fired a rifle on a crowd before killing himself. paramedics used stretchers to carry away victims. a 2-year-old baby, two teenagers and a grandmother are among the dead. according to officials, dozens were injured including young children. police don't know what caused the killings but say they are not terrorism. authorities say the gunman was on the way to the police station for questioning when he launched the attack. he had a history drug and weapons convictions. heather kovar for cbs news. >>> california is one of seven states cited in a government audit that finds serious problems at head start facilities. it is a program that provides early education to
