we are live at the port of oakland. can see the line behind me, these are trucks who are waiting to get to port 55 and 56, one of the term nams that the occupy protest movement is going to target and picket at this morning. but right now, you can see it is business as usual as these trucks line up waiting to unload and given instruction as to what to do next. what we're being told is that the protesters will plan to picket the area, put up a blockade and prevent these trucks from going in. because they know that this is one of the term nams where ships have come -- terminals where ships have come in this morning. why are the ports being targeted? many of the protest rers telling us why the parent companies are raking in billions of dollars, the working conditions at the ports continue to get worse. and benefits and rights are being taken away. that's one of the reasons why they're targeting this area. this port actually belongs to terminal ssa, which is partially owned by the investment bank goldman sachs and we all know

there have been two demonstrations that have disrupted business here at the port of oakland. last week's action cost the port four million dollars. according to the chronicle businesses like target and jc penney are threatening to use the port of l.a. if the city of oakland doesn't do something. some councilmembers say it is time to insist police get more aggressive. they raced -- they raised the issue at a meeting last night. >> that means that you enforce the law. if that means you have to arrest people and -- to get them to abide by those rules that's the way it is. and the sooner the better. >> do we really want to precipitate another confrontation between the oakland police department and the occupy movement? i think no >> reporter: some councilmembers want the resolution directing the mayor to use more aggressive police tactics to prevent another port shutdown. occupy activists say it is legal to picket and protest and say they don't want to get into confrontations with police. there was some thoughting -- there was some shouts interruptions the council decided to table

port of l.a. if the city of oakland can't control its occupy protesters. port of oakland and officials estimate last week's protest cost the port four million dollars. activists blocked terminals so truckers and longshoremen couldn't get to work. police stood by and let the crowd shutdown the port. now some councilmembers are questioning that tactic and pushing for a resolution that would require more aggressive police action to prevent another shutdown. last night they discussed the issue and it got quite confrontational. >> excuse me! you know for people who advocate the right to free speech, you are certainly not giving this man the right of free speech. i wasn't going to support this resolution but you guys have just given me -- just told me where i need to be at. omar, go ahead. >> reporter: protesters had a loud presence last night, made their stance clear. they think freedom of speech gives them the right to protest at the port. they don't want to see police move in because the protesters who resist fear will be pepper sprayed or hit with batons and

the overall goal today is to shut down the port of oakland. right now occupy protesters are meeting here at west oakland bart where we are right now. you can see there's a small crowd of them starting to show up. they've been trickle in for the past 15 to 20 minutes. there's maybe 50 to 60 of them. and what they'll do within a half hour is march down seventh street to the port of oakland to try to shut it down again. just like they did on november 2nd. occupy groups in the western united states are going to be trying to shut down ports up and down the coast and in hawaii in what they are calling wall street on the water front. they hope to hurt the 1%, the big corporations that make money imports and exporting these goods through the ports. protesters did seem to have the support of workers at the port. this time around not so much or not as much. the leadership of the warehouse union, which represents many port workers, is not supporting today's shutdown. what if you're costing union members money today by shutting down the port? >> well, eith

oakland. >> reporter: good morning. protestors have declared victory. none of them here at the portkland to block these truck drivers' paths. the last demonstrators left the premises around 5 a.m. this morning. the port's entrance gates did open around 6:00. and truck drivers were very relieved because they didn't know what was going to happen this morning. there was talk there might be a second day of a port shutdown but that didn't happen. so a lot of these independent truck drivers are happy to know they are going home with a paycheck. this morning's crowd of protestors was small. it turns out they took a vote around 3:00 this morning declared victory and told everyone to go home and that's what they did. in the past 24 hours, thousands of protestors marched to the port. it was mainly a peaceful protest, but two people were arrested yesterday for blocking trucks trying to get into the entrance. other than that everything was fine and everything is quiet here on the waterfront, frank. but just a few minutes ago, i checked out the "occupy oakland"'s twitter account. no tweets yet o
