this black nissan was traveling east on university boulevard approaching lang li drive. it appears the car served, hitting the brick wall in front of the house at 611 university boulevard east. a 22-year-old was killed. it also claimed the life of a 19-year-old of hyattsville. johnson was a passenger in the backseat and may not have been wearing a seatbelt. this 18-year-old of silver spring was sitting in the front passenger seat. she survived the crash but is hospitalized with serious injuries. police are trying to determine if alcohol or excessive speed were involved by questioning friends driving in another car at the time of the crash. >> we want to speak with them more in detail about what the driver was doing prior to getting into the vehicle and how she was operating the vehicle as well. >> reporter: the family of tamara johnson says she was close friends with james, who survived. they both graduated from northwest high school in june. they went out last night to a friend's party in silver spring. >> it was one of her friend's birthday party that they went to. >>

this black nissan was traveling east on university boulevard, approaching lang lee drive. it appears the car swerved, hitting the brick wall in front of the house landing on top of the wall, killing the driver, 22-year-old denise richards of hyattsville. it claimed the life of 19-year-old tamara. johnson was a passenger in the backseat and may not have been wearing a seatbelt. 18-year-old james of silver spring was sitting in the front passenger seat. she survived the crash but is hospitalized with injuries. police are trying to determine if alcohol or excessive speed may have contributed to the cause of this double fatal accident. >> there are reports there was another car of family or friends close by or near to them during the ride on university boulevard. they want to speak to them more in detail about what the driver was doing prior to getting into the vehicle and how she was operating the vehicle as well. >> reporter: the family of tamara johnson tells me she was close friends with james who survived. they both graduate d from northwest high school this past june. th

they were out with friends and driving home when their suv crash old university boulevard. one person survived and tonight, investigators are trying to determine what led up to the deadly crash. he's more on the story. >> reporter: friends and family desperate for answers could only look at the early-morning car crash and hoping it was not as bad as it looked. >> i don't know. this is terrible. very devastating. i don't know. hope everyone is alive. >> reporter: rescuers would find one person alive. >> and they seemed determined that there were three occupants of the vehicle, two deceased. >> reporter: the two bodies remained inside the suv until the medical examiner arrived. the investigation shut down part of the university boulevard near peeny branch for several hours. it appears from the police markings, the driver lost control out of an s-curb, may have leave corrected and swerved back. the suv hit an embankment and smashed a retaining wall launching into the air. >> speed, alcohol, seatbelts, the lay of the road. >> reporter: pieces of the vehicle flew into the wires

we begin with breaking news out of silver spring where university boulevard is shut down right now because of a deadly car accident.. it happened after 3:00 this morning at the intersection of university and herring drive. only one car was involved in the accident. we're told three women were in the car. two of them have died. we have a crew on the scene and we'll bring you a live report, coming up later. >>> all lanes of rothville pike are open at this hour after a deadly accident shut down the busy roadway for hours. the accident happened during rush hour just short of the beltway. police say a pickup truck heading south jumped the median and headed right at the bus. the bus driver swerved to avoid it. the accident left the bus driver trapped. rescue crews had to use pry bars to free her. she was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. passengers watched helplessly as the whole thing unfolded before them. >> i heard the noise and the bus kind of went off the side of the road and hit the tree. >> the next thing i know, we hit the tree, just like that. it was so fast.
