asian americans. the plans are the culminated efforts of the members of the mayor's asian-pacific american heritage celebrationmittee. please welcome me and joining claudine cheng for her remarks on this year's celebration. >> thank you, everyone, for joining us for our celebration this year. the theme of our celebration is celebrate heritage, celebrated community voices. the community is selected this team for two reasons. one -- the community recognizes we care about this city, that we want our interest to be addressed, and how do we do that? we need our voices to be heard. the second reason -- we would like to inspire and encourage the next generation of leaders to be engaged and affected community voices. so far, this year, we have decided to dedicate our award to individuals and business organizations that have been effective community voices. there is a listing of all the finalists in the program books. they have all been magnificent. thank you on behalf of the community. i hope -- i know all of them are here tonight and i would like to ask them to stand and be recognized. all of our awards finalists, pl

asian communities and their efforts to promote tolerance and understanding between communities of color. 20 years ago, president carter signed into law a resolution declaring one week in the month of may as asian-pacific americanitage week. in 1990, that celebration was expanded to the entire month of may and in 1991, legislation was signed into law, proclaiming asian-pacific heritage month in may to be a permanent celebration in united states. that is wonderful for us. thank you again for being here this evening. back in 2005, mayor newsom enthusiastically supported the idea of a celebration each year that would include all apa communities in the city and county of san francisco, where -- get this. more than one-third of the population is asian-american and pacific islander. you rock. our next speaker is no stranger to this event, but within the last few years, he represented mayor newsome at this very celebration. in january of this year, a new chapter was written when the board of supervisors unanimously voted in city administrator edwin lee to be the mayor of san francisco. he was noted as the best candidate for leading the city for work because of his more than 25 years of experience as a leader in city g

americans. [applause] >> good morning. on behalf of oca, dedicated to advancing the well-being of asian pacific americans, we're pleased tonnounce the stamp by the postal service. oca is proud to be an organization that has helped to launch this program for 20 years. this commemorative stamp program has been a wonderful opportunity to promote our social heritage. we look forward to doing that in the future. unlike true knowledge of those who designed the stamp and a part of the -- i would like to acknowledge those who designed the stamp and are part of the program. of those, nearly 9% are asian- american or pacific islanders. we are extremely proud of our inclusive environment that respects the uniqueness of every individual and encourages the contributions of people from different cultures, backgrounds, experiences. diversity is one of our biggest pluses as an employer. the postal service issued its first service of lunar new year stamps through 2004. in 2008, we introduced a new series of stamps commemorating lunar new year. since then, we have probably pay tribute to the year of the rat, the year of the ox, me, the year of the tiger, and the year of the rabbit. we're pleas stamp for the year f the dragon to the popular series. according to one chinese legend, all of the animals of the kingdom were invited to a meeting but only 12 showed up. as a reward, he gave each animal a year of his own. the dragon is the fifth of 12 animals associated with the chinese lunar calendar. of the 12, is perhaps the most potent and recognizable in images and mystic tales. it has been said that people born during the lunar

founding members of the national asian pacific women's movement in the late 1970's, which resulted in the development of the local bay area group, pacific asian american women. the have been running 30 years. she recently completed three terms as a san francisco airport commissioner. please join me in welcoming carol ito. american to visit since the death of kim jong il. campbell will meet with counterparts in china, south korea and japan. he's in charge of u.s./east asian and pacific affairs. and he's expected to urge china to use its influence with north korea to prevent possible confusion under new leader, kim jong un. campbell will then head to south korea and japan to discuss a range of issues with senior officials. he will meet with senior japanese officials on friday, to discuss north korea's nuclear program. and its abductions of japanese nationals. >>> north korean agents abducted japanese citizens more than 30 years ago. the whereabouts of at least 12 people remain unknown. their families hoped the transfer of power following kim jong il's death would bring about a resolution. but a new report by the korean central news agency says the north no longer recognizes the issue. it's the first time state-run media have commented on japan since kim jong il's son, kim jong un, took charge of the reclusive nation. the report also says japan's government has darkened prospects for bilateral ties by not officially offering condolences after the late leader's death.
