in joplin, so much of it able to bring together the faith-based community. the southern baptist cooking food for 50,000 people that was then delivered by the red cross to a salvation army shelter that was served by men nice and cleaned up by muslims. with no government involvement. that's whole community. that's what it's going to take to recover from these. a lot of times people start thinking about recovery. people start thinking about it as soon as the response starts happening. some start thinking about it as soon as the response is over. that's not the time to think about the recovery. the time to think about recovery is now. one of the things we have thought about is the national disaster's recovery frame work. we work ackry thems. ackry nelms. with the ndrf. it lays out forward how we need to recover from disasters. we are going to be going around the country. we went around initially. now we're going to go around again laying it out. still i want to get feedback from folks how to best do that. it's not going to take just government but the exact same

we watched this happen in joplin, missouri last year. several of our people from this area went there to help, and today we find ourselves in need. so, again, as mayor of this community, i'm very grateful and very appreciative of awful the suppo support we're getting from top to bottom. i've been on the phone with the governor's office since 6:00 this morning, and he's en route here now as we speak. many of our elected officials, representative brandon phelps, has driven in to be with us today. and i can't begin to tell you what this feels like as a mayor to sit here and talk about losing lives in a tornado. when the sirens were going off this morning, i walked out of my home with my family. i looked, and it was eerily quiet and the sirens were bla blaring i had a gut feeling that something was dreadfully wrong. we had devastation in our community like we've never seen. we can deal with floods, we can deal with lots of other things, but dealing with a tornado like this is heartbreaking. we are doing everything we can to protect this comm

john's hospital in joplin, missouri.emony was held last week to break ground for a new hospital and to begin tearing down the old one. a cnn i-reporter takes to us a community trying to rebuild. >> i got gown to st. john's hospital within an hour of the tornado hitting. i had friends working there so i was worried. looking at the devastation all around and at the hospital building itself it seemed there would be a lot who didn't survive. workers were salvaging anything they could, any supplies they could from the hospital to treat the wounded. doctors and nurses were tending patients in the parking lot and there was already a triage center up and running. the scene was really surreal. in the middle of such a stressful situation i remember everyone was so calm, just taking care what have they had to do. that building that stood there these last 8 1/2 months looking exactly the same as it did that night. it is time for it to come down and for joplin to move on to the next chapter. normally they'd use implosion for this but

does not appear to be a big, devastating tornado like the one that hit joplin. the entertainment district has been hit. the roof of a waurl mart has reported to be collapsed. best western is supposed to have major damage. no reports of any fatalities out of bran son. it does appear that bran son, missouri, was hit by a pretty strong tornado overnight. overall, ten tornado reports. these show where they occurred around the greater springfield area and a couple in areas of kansas. we have a tornado warning still. possibility of one occurring now along the arkansas missouri border. we'll watch that as that storm approaches. a tornado just north of cape gerardo. now crossing the mississippi into southern portions of illinois. st. louis, you are now safe. we'll watch the severe storms continuing as we go through the morning. now we have a snowy side of this storm. full-fledged classic early spring storm with the tornadoes and the blizzard conditions on the back side through areas of south dakota. hopefully the roads won't be too bad. most of the heavy snow north of y

and on the ground in joplin, missouri, 14 hours after the tornado went through there. and i was in tuscaloosa, alabama, smithville. mississippi. northern georgia, all affected by the tornadoes. and up in north dakota from the floods. and when i was flying over north dakota, had the opportunity with the general and a couple congressmen. and as we're flying over, and it was just cresting. in looking at the damages, the general is explaining how many homes and businesses were damaged. in sort of a side mentioned we've really done a good job and haven't lost any lives and working hard, and we saved the school and did this and did that. later i went and talked to the mayor and governor and police, fire, e.m.s. folks and chiefs and command staffs and a lot of people that had been working on fighting the flood in north dakota for literally -- much longer, but this part of it for two weeks. and sometimes i think we miss things and we forget things. but for total devastation, they did not lose one life. that is incredible. if you can view the damage that happened there. and the

the joplin effect, people still scared what happened in joplin last may were paying attention.s you can see behind me, a lot of clean-up. this is the entertainment strip in branson. there's 40 theaters up and down this highway. on a busy day, they can play host to 60,000 visitors at the shopping outlet malls and the theaters. today it's just shut down. there was so much utility lines and trees broken down. i went down the highway about an hour ago. a lot of businesses were just flattened by this storm. it the tourist season is not really very high in february, but in march, it starts to crank up because of spring break and some of the people down there with small shops who had lost everything are just bemoaning the fact with the busy season about to begin, they're going to be out of luck. the mayor says only about six of the 409 theaters sustained any kind of significant damage and they'll be open as usual within a week or two and ready to handle the crowds. again, they feel they doned the big bullet of injuries and fatalities here. of course, it is a very sad story in other pa
