further to the east, this is macomb county.n area rick santorum thought he would do very well. reagan democrats here. romney with a then lead. romney is up by 6 points. santorum needs to cut into romney's lead there in macomb county in order to pull off the upset tonight in michigan. but look at this area out here in the west. this is grand rapids. this is kent county. this is gerald ford country. it's where his library is located and they have santorum with a slight lead right now by one point over romney. further to the west, these are evangelical christians, these are people who rick santorum has targeted from the very beginning in michigan, and ottawa county along lake michigan has santorum winning that county by 17 points. so that is part of the reason why when we put our numbers into this state map right now, why we cannot call it. but some of the other numbers, once they come into the counties, will give us a better idea as we move away from about 38% of the vote to 50% and beyond. take you back four years ago. this is 2

he's doing well in southern -- southeastern michigan, around detroit, oakland county, wayne county, macombnty. in 2008, that's where 35% of the republican vote in michigan came from. rick santorum is doing well in the southwest by grand rapids, kent, ottawa counties. and in the upper peninsula, those two areas accounted for 40% of the republican vote in 2008. so that leaves the rest of the state, a huge area, for them to fight over in the next 24 hours. how do you see this ending? can willard win that chunk of michigan in the next day? >> he can win it, but it's going to be a cliffhanger, reverend. i think it's going to be a real nail biter right to the finish. and i would not be shocked if santorum didn't pull off a shocking upset. >> now erin, when you hear that, and you look at the fact that there is some strange campaigning going on in michigan, there's a robo call out that is calling on democrats in michigan to vote tomorrow. and at the end it says paid for by rick santorum. listen to this. >> on tuesday, join democrats who are going to send a loud message to massachusetts mitt romney

the three big southeastern counties, wayne, oakland, and macomb, a few fringe counties down there, and rest of the population is spread over 83 counties. western michigan, around grand rapids, ottawa county, heavily conservative christian, a lot of fundamentalists voters, maybe tea party activists there. that is a kind of treasure trove of votes for somebody like rick santorum who, i think, looks at metrodetroit and knows that mitt romney has a slight advantage there, maybe a big advantage, because that's where the auto industry is. that's where mitt romney is from. his farther was president of american motors. that's where mitt romney grew up. that's where his name romney is best known. so rick santorum has got to win this race out-state and in west michigan. >> woodruff: so given that voter landscape, mickey maynard, what is the economy looking like? how are voters -- these republican voters feeling right now? >> well, the state mott poe of michigan translates as if you seek a pleasant peninsula look about you. and i've been joking lately that the state motto should be, "it's better
