we had an opportunity to order some quilt panels from the memorial quilt. we put in a bunch of names, and we didn't know who would be here. one of the very first staff members of ward 5-b, george, is here. those of you who knew george and worked with him, his picture is here. i want to thank those who helped track down our people. a lot of dedicated work on alison's part. i want to put a shout out to gino, sue, brad, and diane for pg&e -- for being here and still doing the work. thank you all. [applause] i started on ward 5-b as a nurse. i was about 12 years old in 1983. in the politics of memory. and as long as we have a politics of race in the united states, i don't see it ending at least today, maybe tomorrow, not today. then we are likely to have a politics of civil war memory. in my five minutes that may be left, i wanted to borrow, if i can, from robert penn warren, as only he could do it. he's the subject of one of the four chapters in this book. robert penn warren not only wrote "all the king's men" one of the greatest novel in american politics and i think one of the greatest civil war novels in american letters, he wrote that wonderful little book at the centennial of the civil war in 1961 called "legacy of a civil war" which was first written as a kind of meditative essay in "life" magazine. it was robert penn warren's own personal and therefore unique and peculiar take on the meaning and memory of the civil war and there are plenty of things in it we could fuss over today. but he gave us two metaphors or slogans that are still useful. if we're trying to think about,

most all memorials are created avalos is done, after concluded, perhaps years. the other interesting about this memorial is that we have created a space for people to come and heal that was created by individuals out of action. and it was a relationship that was formed between individuals and the city of san francisco. because again, this space was given to the community. it was given to a group that had not even formally forged itself. that shows that 20 years ago, there was commitment at all levels, and there continues to be. so where are we today. we are here today to recommit ourselves. we must realize that the fight is not over. every hour on the hour, the equivalent of a jumbo jet crashes, losing all of the passengers to aids. the fight is not over. we must continue to console, to support and to nurture each other. today we will be honored to hear from and to pay tribute to those that were in the fight 20, 25 and 30 years ago that so selflessly took a step forward. we will also hear from the next generation. because again, many of us have been in the trenc

ample testimony to how brilliant his memory was. but what really freaked me out researching this book, i came across a letter t.r. wrote his son kermit in response to a question by kermit, dad, do you remember a poem by edith waters living south of the border. and t.r. said, yes, writing back, yes, i remember it very well, it goes like this, and he wrote out this entire two stanza poem. by this very obscure poet who i never heard of. i thought, i'll just check this out. i looked her up. i found when this poem was published. t.r. wrote that letter, i believe, in 1914. the poem was published in 1898 in the "atlantic monthly." i looked up that issue of the magazine and found that t.r. himself had an article in that same issue. in other words, 1898, looking at his own article he'd come across this poem in the magazine. registered in his head. i compared the written words that he'd written in 1914 and i could see they were not copied from the magazine because there were several minor mistakes. but otherwise it was word for word what he h

the lincoln memorial is lit up right there in the center of your screen. i watched the sun rise in the mornings on the weekends sometimes. i tell her it's the rectangle building, my daughter and i. she refers to the washington monument like a spaceship building. its 43 in the district, 42 at dulles, if 36 in culpeper, 41 in martinsburg. a mild start normally we would be a little below freezing, but that's not the case at this time. we have clouds streaming over yet, shown in quiet. some areas of rain started to gather in oklahoma and as close as missouri. that's part of the low pressure system that will track of the northeast, passing just west of washington tomorrow. that will put us on one side of the system and give us rainfall. sorry, snow lovers. that's been the story of the winter. we are looking at around a quarter of an inch of rain throughout the day tomorrow. not a washout. it's not going to be raining everywhere all the time. test of the scattered showers here and there especially from the midday into the afternoon. beautiful day. morning clouds
