we were asked to say a few words about why origami and why trees. i will turn it over to my sister. >> the inspiration for the origami crane, the cream is a symbol of water life and happiness in japan -- the crane is a symbol of water life and happiness in japan. when a woman was dying of leukemia after the bomb dropped in hiroshima, she created the crane as a symbol of peace. the symbol has resonated with so many people. we've got a lot of people to come in and write wishes and put them on the crane. there are over 7000 cranes on the tree, 13,000 stars to add some more sparkle and help with the wishes up to the heavens. so, we are really grateful we have the ability to create this gift for the city of san francisco. we would like to thank everybody who helped us. there are some many people. a lot of kids in the city of san francisco. that is pretty much it. thank you. thank you for coming. millie. the ancient art of origami. >> isn't folding cranes about healing? >> it's more about kind of being in tune with yourself. >> what have you learned folding cranes? >> i've learned a lot of patience. >> shiloh was serving time for sex crimes at the orange county jail in southern california. >> i made exactly 1,000 of these. i had a whole little plastic bag, probably about like that big. it was just filled. >> we met brian crist at the maricopa county jail in phoenix shortly before his conviction on a murder charge. >> origami, that's my getaway. i have a bird that flies and a frog that jumps. the champ. front flip. put him in the olympics, man. >> it's really striking and poignant to see inmates who oftentimes are in for incredibly violent crimes sitting there delicately folding this paper over hours into frogs and elephants and that kind of thing. and it really does seem to calm their nerves and almost transform them. >> nobody had a menagerie to match that of philip stroud, who was serving three life sentences for murder at the wabash valley correct

the only thing that seems to move freely is the offering the origami cranes that dance in the wind at the monument in the cemetery at manzanar. it's hard to imagine a more desolate place. freezing in the winter, with heart-stopping heat in the summer, and sandstorms that could drop you to your knees. manzanar was one of ten japanese-american internment camps built during world war ii following the outbreak of war with japan on december 7th, 1941. in the panic that followed pearl harbor, japanese-american citizens were rounded up and sent to what amounted to prison camps for the duration of the war. the internment camp at manzanar has been turned into a national historic site. >> when people first came here, the barracks were just barely completed if they were complete. so you had bare wood floors. you know. no linoleum or wall board or anything like that. starting in the summer of 1942 they started putting down linoleum and putting in wall board. so the barracks did change a little bit. still, they were never insulated. they had a single hanging lightbulb. they had an electrical socke

the tree behind me is covered with 7000 pieces of origami, the majority of which are cranes.es for the world written on them. wishes are sent to us by snail mail and through the internet. we designed a project so that through the internet, anyone in the world can help decorate the tree by sending in a wage. and we create the tree as a global symbol of unity and as a gift from the world to the lgbt community. we are adding crane wishes throughout the month of december, so please send us your wish for the world if you have not already done so. we have another gift for you tonight. our volunteers have been distributing friendship bracelets from guatemala. we take the ball on a humanitarian aid for of guatemala every year, and when we come back, we bring back a lot of friendship bracelets to spread the spirit of love from guatemala to the people of united states. we ask that you accept these in the spirit of rainbow world fund's philosophy, and that is that we're all one human family. we ask that you wear the bracelet as a symbol of solidarity with the core of the world. without
