sony's blamed the strong yen. tv unit and tough competition from samsung electronics. howard stringer the ceo is going to be stepping down in april. sony will hope to turn things around with the employment of its incoming chief kazuo hirai. >>> also, deutsche bank today posted a surprise pretax loss, $351 million euros, had forecast a profit over a billion euros. investment banking was where the problem was hit hard by the you' european debt crisis. net revenue down 26%. write-downs from corporate investments and litigation costs also weighed. and shell today posted an 18% jump in fourth quarter profit but that missed analyst expectations. the energy company said results were impacted by a down turn in industry refining margins. shell has kept its dividends steady at 42 cents a share and expects to grow it later this year. also on 0 the ftse today we've heard from astrazeneca as well. its stock slightly lower. they're amongst the losers. along with unilever as well. julia has been out speaking to the ceo this morn

it's an important link between sony and the consumer. he also said he will pursue actively restructuring. he's going to look at asset writing. and he's going to make sure to make the tough choices. try to bust through the silos that are widely criticized that sony has. that they have to be a unified company working together. they must do that in order to cree it a future for sony. he is aware that there's a big to-do list. his in-box is going to be quite full. he is, at the age of 51, one of the younger ceos here in corporate japan. he's going to need that youthful energy from day one, andrew. >> and did howard stringer say anything in his farewell as the ceo? he's going to stay on as chairman of the board. but stepping down as ceo, what did he have to say? >> it actually sounded much more like a retirement speech. he wasn't just stepping back from the position. he was stepping almost into full retirement. he did seem quite a bit upbeat. but he did specifically say, if there were not these natural disasters. what happened in thailand. if

one of the majors not trading like sony and sony has earnings today. now, we are getting updated on this every minute. we have romin. what can you tell us? >> thank you very much, ai. quite a lot of developments. some glitches occurred in the data distribution system. it stopped trading on 241 issues. the tse says that a malfunction occurred in the system server. it is now checking the cause and it's trying to restore it. the tse says some problems occurred in a part of the system called arrowhead. this made it impossible to provide information to investors around 241 issues including power companies and manufacturers, major issues affected include komatsu, hitachi and sony. as you said, sony coming out with earnings after the bell today. so it's not clear at this point when the system will return to normal. the tse says for the nikkei and topics indexes information is being provided to investors as normal except on those 241 issues. ai, back to you. >> all right. thanks a lot, ramin. we've just gotten this in as well, theapor on stock exchange on hock

check out sony. stock rebounding after getting gored yesterday on news of better than expected annual loss. but the incoming ceo made a pretty good first impression on the conference call. nobody doubts he has a huge challenge ahead of him. what does he need to do right now to stop the sony bleeding which has been going on for about, a decade. jon fortt here now to give him some advice. jon. >> tvs are the main issue with the losses. what is this? i would argue that this is symbolic of the bigger picture. they make baby monitors. what are they doing making baby monitors? you know what else they make? take a look. all this stuff. now, when steve jobs came back to right size apple in the late '90s, he had a different take on things. we're going to get to that. ceo now is known for the playstation business and for having a big picture how does everything work together look at sony. so let's get to that apple picture. this is what steve jobs did when he came back. he said, look, we're going to simplify.

nikkei closed in the positive, despite the half day trading suspension on key issues, stocks like sony in trouble. they came out with earnings yesterday after the close saying that net loss, reporting net loss of $2 billion and also saying that it expects a net loss for the rest of the fiscal year close to $3 billion. other major companies like hi tach ee have a net loss, profits fell 45%. and keeping to its outlook for the fiscal year on hopes of increase in sales in its automotive systems, and a shift away from consumer electronic goods to infrastructure, it, and electrical power. let's look at some of the fx levels, currency levels this morning. you can see the euro lost a little ground against the dollar and yen compared to late hours yesterday. you can see there 100.03-06. >> ramin, given the surge in commodities, some commodities late last year, japan's trading houses look to have come through in pretty good shape. >> indeed. we saw arise in commodity prices and the likes of mitsubishi corporation, mitt sue ian company, all posting record profits and that's due to the rise in com

is this sony's second major handheld gaming system. the successor to the psp. psv how available at $249 is a great piece of hardware in my review, i'm very positive about it. it's got a gorgeous five inch organic light emitting diodes. there's five ways to play the games. you've got a touch screen on the front, a back touch panel, you've got dual analog sticks so it feels like a video game console. there's tilt sensors, familiar playstation buttons on the front. a lot going for. and the first batch of games led by unchartered golden abyss which is one of their key signature franchises on the p y playstation 3. looks and plays great. so it's like having a console in your pocket. the problem that i have is the price of the games. $30 to $50 a pop for a portable game. and that's pretty steep when you're talking about a culture now used to paying 99 crep 9 ce angry birds. it's a lot. granted again we're talking console can-like quality in both video and control. but i think that's going to be a hard sell. but if you look at the quality of the games, the selection,
