story. >>> it is 50 years of beaumont history, 1900 to 1950, in microcosm, it shows how a wealthy southeast texas family lived in the first half of the 20th century. the mcfaddens were a family that came to texas from tennessee. first in the 1820s, and they settled in this part of texas, far southeast texas in 1833. they had cattle and later on they began to acquire land to put the cattle on. when oil was discovered in this area in 1901, it brought the mcfaddens a lot more money than they had already had. they were already pretty comfortable in their own right, but when oil was discovered in this area, the land that the lucas gusher, the original well was on, plus a lot of the land that wasssfuy belonged to the mcfadden family, because they had spent so many years accumulating all that pastureland for cattle. it was in the middle of where the oil was found. just the whole area profited so much from the oil. william mcfadden was a tough man, some called him ruthless. his life was built around acquiring as many cattle and as much land as he possibly could. he didn't have a lot of education. it was

and he served the people of beaumont and southeast texas for 42 years. and he was a very powerful democrat. he had stronre labor unions and he did many economic development projects for beaumont and port arthur, the southeast texas region. he was very close to speaker sam raburn and also to majority leader of the senate, lyndon b. johnson who, of course, later was vice president and then president of the united states. in working with lyndon johnson, jack brooks voted for some very important controversial new laws, especially the civil rights act of 1964. before this law in 1964, there was widespread discrimination and segregation against black people in the united states, especially in the southern united states. black people were barred from going in restaurants and cafes and motels and movie theaters. they could work in those places. but they were not welcome there as customers or clients. so there was widespread discrimination. and many people thought that should be changed. and during the year of 1963, president kennedy proposed a new civil rights l

obama took the first step to get out of the way in bringing tar sands oil from canada to my home, southeast texas. it's the yellow pipeline here on this chart. the administration agreed to build the first segment from curbing, -- cushing, oklahoma, right here to southeast texas, the port of houston and the port of port arthur. in announcing the administration's changed position, white house spokesman jay carney said, this is a quote, moving oil from the midwest to the world class state refineries on the gulf coast will modernize our infrastructure, create jobs, and encourage american energy production. amen. 430 miles down, 1,223 to go. but there is no new oil with this pipeline being built. none. so, houston, we still have a problem. that problem is exploding prices for gasoline. since the day president obama took office, he took office on january 20, 2009, since that time gasoline prices have doubled from $1.84 per gallon to over $3.70 per gallon. doubled. this hits texas families hard. if you have a pickup truck with a 24-gallon gas tank and fill it up every two years, that's $90 increase in g

southeast. already raining along the texas coast. low pressure down here. very warm, gulf air.ratures there in the 70s and 80s. water temperatures, still quite warm. because it never was cold this winter. low pressure with rain developing. they need that in texas. that's moving off to the east. low pressure is going to move across georgia to the carolina coast, by sunday. then out to sea. the big question mark, we still don't know exactly, exactly how far north or south that low is going to be. if it's pretty far south, we may not see a flake of snow this weekend. but it's still a possibility. right now, based on our current models and information, we are calling for, as you mentioned earlier, maybe 1 to 3 inches of snow across much of our region. maybe a little more to the south. heavier amounts down across the mountains of virginia. some areas down, there if it all comes together, could see 6, 7, 8 inches of wet snow. this will be a wet snow, until sunday night, when the low passes. the winds go back to the north/northwest. colder air comes in. and whatever is left out there,
