unfortunately one of the principles according to king john's view of it would result in his being excommunicated because the king of england then was really subordinate to the pope. the pope said this isn't a very good principle because the principle said that 25 nobelmen could come together and overrule what the king wanted and if that were the case, maybe sometime somebody could overrule what the pope wanted. the pope said i don't like that, the king said i don't want to be excommunicated and several weeks after he actually attached his seal to it, he abrogated it. that resulted in a war. he died in the war. his 9-year-old son became the king. they came up with a new version and that kept the peace for a while. when that king, king henry died, his son, king edward, became king. and he needed money to fight wars in france, he sought from nobelmen for more money, and they asked him to agree to a new magna carta and he actually did so in 1297. this comes from 1297. this became the law of the land of england and is still the law of the land of england, so this actually became something that really

john king with us, john avlon and romney advisor kevin madden joins us now as well.e delegate math though from the man who knows this better than anyone in america -- john king. tell us what you see the delegate map. >> that's a set-up line if ever i've heard one. then the other two guys beat me up. i know who it works. mr. avalon i read today said romney is not inevitable. he is correct. let's just say he wins illinois tonight and get most of the delegates. i just gave senator santorum louisiana. if romney wins illinois, santorum not even half that. you got to get to 1,144. fast-forward to the end of the process for the sake of the conversation. i want to play with some of these states. say for example, santorum people say no, we can play here. other santorum people say we can play in indiana. these will be key contests, west virginia, i'll give to santorum, north carolina for the sake of this hypothetical, santorum. it still has romney clinching. where else, if you look at the map. santorum under this scenario, being generous, louisiana, texas and wisconsin, indian

cnn's chief national correspondent john king joins us now. he hosts "john king usa" week nights as 6:00 p.m. eastern. as if john king needs an introduction to anybody who watches tv. john, as we just pointed out, we just pointed out three states. every state has a different economy. so what economic issues are going to be the most important both in super tuesday and in the election? >> ali, you make a very critical point going state by state because we often look at national polling and look at national numbers like the unemployment rate, like gdp and say the economy is doing better or doing worse or pick the national number. presidential elections are decided not just the nominating process, the general elections state by state. you just pointed ohio, a state still struggling. unemployment in the 8% range, the industrial base. move over, go to pennsylvania, go to michigan, some of the big electoral battle grounds are the states hit the hardest in the recession and having the hardest time coming back. it's better now than it was a year ago but

here with me tonight are chief political analyst, gloria bore ger, john king of cnn's john king usa. they're ready to assess and analyze the results. we'll get perspective from ari fleischer and hillary rosen. let start out with paul at state republican party headquarters in bellevue, washington. set the scene for us, paul. what's the latest? >> well, we just had three more counties trickle in. i'm going to bring in the gopwi. we have 26 of 39. >> 26 of 39. >> we should node the big counties not in yet. tell us what the last three counties were and what the count is in them. >> we had woodman and cal at and i can't remember the third one that was -- >> franklin. >> franklin. what we have now total, we have mitt romney at 36%, we have rick santorum and congressman paul tied to the vote 42.56%. and newt gingrich behind at 12 and about 3% undecided or other. our record attendance, 17,100 votes in already and these are the smaller counties. we had a total of 14,000 people in 2008. so we've got record attendance without the big counties. i think this shows a high level of enthusiasm and e

a lot to talk about and let's check in with wolf blitzer and john king. >> 55% of the vote is in in illinois. you can see an impressive lead for mitt romney. john, a very impressive win, we have projected obviously a long time ago that mitt romney wins illinois. >> we will see fluctuation as we get the remaining 40-plus part of the vote. but mitt romney did what he had to do. you see rick santorum purple in much of the state. you would say, wait, santorum is winning. marion county it's tiny. so he's winning with 49% of the vote. but it's only 658 votes to 439. remember that, because now you have move up here into the chicago area, the cook county suburbs, governor romney getting 75,000 of the votes. so a thumping an it's built on governor romney having success up here. nearly half lives really inside that circle. so governor romney winning in urban areas and winning in the suburban areas big over 50% of the suburbs. and carrying his victory out into the exurbs as well. santorum winning among evangelicals, but politics in the end is about math. governor romney winning huge. he dropped under 5

john king, cnn's john king here. lk about that memorable time, and john if you're there, let's discuss how it changed things. do you think it changed politics forever? >> without a doubt it changed politics forever. remember, clinton was in a lot of trouble that year. a lot of character questions. a fascinating nurnl race, ross perot was a factor. the challenge? number one for bill clinton to expand the definition of his personality with a lot of character questions and other questions whether this guy from arkansas was ready to do this. reach out, get new voters. perot was bringing new voters. the seed in the new television age of getting outside the traditional news programs and taking a risk. taking a risk, arsenio. good politicians take a risk. you remember, i was a print reporter at the time covering that campaign. a lot of people criticized him, said this is not presidential. he wont election. by definition it worked. >> yeah. i took a lot of criticism. people said that it wasn't a dignified move for a president

let's go to john king and talk ability ohio. the numbers show santorum slightly ahead, but for viewers just tuning in, we say this, and we say it boldly, and we say it exclusively. romney is really slightly ahead of rick santorum. >> by about 3,000 votes by our count because we're going to show you the numbers here. this is the official count, 78% from hamilton county shows romney with a big lead. we have from dana bash more updated numbers that get us overrateover a 80% where romney got a huge jump. you see a 10,000 edge in the county. we all know that he has a bigger edge by our hamilton county numbers to give him a boost of about 3,000 state-wide. now the question is, are there places where santorum can make it up, and are there more places where romney can get votes. this was blank a bit earlier. medina county, romney with 6% of the vote in, with a slight lead. rough and tumble. he might add a little. that's not a comeback place for santorum. here is the hard one. cuyahoga county, still at 41%. been there for a long time, bu

back with me now in washington, wolf blitzer and john king.h me in new york gloria borger and david gergen. i've got to read this out. david gergen is so smart. but since you're so smart, imagine you're rick santorum tonight. you're looking at where this campaign's gone wrong. i spoke to his wife last night as she tried to almost single handedly rein him back in from this arch right wing rhetoric on social issues. because clearly that is not working anymore. and actually mitt romney moves it back to the economy, playing to his strengths is beginning to gather more momentum away from santorum. what could santorum do, if anything, to get back on track? >> he has to get back to his original message. he was the guy from the steel town and his dad worked hard. he associated with the working class and the blue collar guy. and talked about manufacturing and restoring manufacturing. and the social issues were secondary. gloria's point, i think he's tired. i think he's fundamentally wiped out. and he's lost his discipline so that he keeps talking about

let's turn to john king and wolf for this. >> thanks very much.the polls do show a very impressive win tonight for mitt romney. and he won not only because he won in some of the bigger popular toy areas. but it's deeper. >> illinois is not mississippi or alabama or louisiana which is up next. but look at this. 65% of the electorate, two-thirds of the voters say they were conservative. mitt romney has had trouble. he won 43% of the vote to senator santorum's 39 among those who said they were conservative. this is evidence. the party is going around and santorum will say louisiana is a lot different. this is another good night for mitt romney with which he has struggled in the past. among this constituency, another 43 to 47% at 12%. and ron paul at 7%. but governor romney winning among tea party supporters. the biggest issue was the economy. this is the lopsided romney win here. so he holds his strength here. if you look at this one again, the romney campaign will cite this. his problem has been can he connect with blue collar voters. let's come ove

let's go over to john king. en looking and looking where that 4%, john, is the outstanding vote that hasn't been counted in ohio. where is it and could it potentially make a difference? >> since we're about to go to alaska after we figure out ohio, i'm going rogue on you. as you see this math at 96%, you can't get senator santorum back into this. again, john king going rogue here. 96% in cuyahoga county, big lead for romney. we assume where that will go. to summit county, here's more of the missing vote. stark county, suburban and exurban area. 89% of the vote. that's most of the missing vote in the state of ohio right now. romney winning in the county. not enough votes there for santorum to come back. >> all right, john, stand by for a moment because we have got some news. we're going to report right now. >>> all right, cnn you makes the projection in ohio. look at this, mitt romney wins the ohio republican presidential primary. we have just made this projection based on all the voting that's coming in, where th

let's bring back wolf blitzer and john king. >> i want john to walk us through 1144 delegates the magice yet. >> it's a long way to get there. he's not quite to the halfway mark yet. the question is, the santorum campaign, the gingrich campaign not only can we block them. for santorum to clinch, he'd have to win 70% of the remaining delegates. he's only won 20% of the delegates so far. first let's go through tonight. if romney wins tonight by the proportions it looks like it's going to be, this is early, but he'll pick up delegates. santorum will pick up delegates. >> the interesting thing about illinois, even if santorum were and he probably won't get more of the popular vote. he didn't get on the ballots. he's going to lose the delegate count in illinois no matter what. >> no matter what happens, he's left ten on the table tonight. i'm going to fast forward to the end. if this goes all the way through under this scenario we've given santorum louisiana. we've given him texas. we've given him arkansas. we've given him pennsylvania. under this scenario, romney clinches handily. to be gen

so let's get to john king with the latest exit polling data and john, you have been looking at this and interesting things of the evangelicals and who is out today and who isn't? >> well, gail on, and dead heat in the polling, and three-way ties, and who voted and what is on the mind of the people voting and you have the look for clues and we have to be careful, because the polls are open. but can governor romney win the shout? he has the most money and so is he conservative enough? if not, where do they go? so if they have a split, 42% for gingrich and 47% for santorum. and more than half say he is not conservative enough. it does not mean they did not vote for him, but 42% of the people in mississippi describe themselves as very conservative, and that is not surprising in a conservative southern state. and 10% in mississippi describe moderate to liberal, so maybe not as conservative as you thought. that is mississippi. move over, and these are open primaries and no party registrati registration. and 38% in alabama, and 31% somewhat, and 31%, moderate to liberal. we may stereotype them

it is now only 7.9%, one of the best improved and a big part of the story. >> john king, as we count to the next poll closings, also keeping close watch on the battle for ohio. john. >> let's look at what we're waiting for the next hour. two very important states. the state of tennessee. one thing we're looking for, senator santorum needs to win the state of tennessee tonight. yes, 71% are you a white evangelical born again christian and hthat has been a source of strength. with 10 states voting across the country, different states have different electorates, evangelicals in times square, 72% in oklahoma say they're born again evangelical, 72% in tennessee and oklahoma and watch if they go for senator santorum. battleground ohio. interesting question. your opinion of the tea party. nearly 6 in 10 say they supported the tea party as they voted in ohio. how did they break down with the candidates? she doesn't want to work at the moment. i want to show you the results in ohio. a little while ago, colored red for romney and slight edge for senator santorum, an emphasis on slight. and the
