grassley: i want to talk about a judicial nomination. i have come to the floor many days to talk about judicial nominations, and most of my remarks at those times as well as this time is to respond to some of the claims made by my colleagues from the other side of the aisle. if you listen to some of our colleagues -- listened to some of our colleagues over the last couple of days, you would think that the sky is falling on the issue of judicial nominees. they act as if the senate is treating president obama's judicial nominees differently than nominees have been treated in the past. this is simply not true. a fair and impartial look at the numbers tells a far different story. the fact of the matter is that president obama's nominees are being treated just as well and in many cases much more fairly than the democrats treated president bush's nominees. so i want to take just a few minutes to set the record straight. let me start by taking a brief look at the 17 cloture motions that the majority has filed. seven of those nominees were repor

he submitted fewer nominations, about 20% fewer nominations, than president bush had. and the average time from nomination to confirmation of president obama's nominees is within a week of the average time for a nomination -- one of president bush's nominees. the process is working okay here. what is happening? i tell you, i know what's happening. this democratic leadership in the senate, make no mistake, they control this body. they've been trying to create a perception that there is obstruction going on. they're going to pretend that these 17 judges who have been coming up for their retun routie to be confirmed are being blocked. they've been moving at the regular pace. it is a gimmick, a stungt stunto create an impression politically. we need to working on things that are important. we now will have finally after three weeks votes today maybe to pass the highway bill. well, why did it take three weeks? we went about two weeks without anything. we've had votes now all of a sudden at the end, about two days' worth of votes and the bill will be up for final passage. wh

or one of the others to get one, to get the nomination. i think there's a great deal of truth in that. because you look at the math. with about 404 delegates currently needing 1144 total. next leading contender rick santorum with 165. it's almost impossible to look at those races ahead. particularly in the eastern industrial states as well as in california and illinois, which is going to be in mid-march. it's almost impossible to imagine that someone like rick santorum, who really has not been able to broaden his appeal beyond evangelical christian base and the extreme right, it's really, really hard to imagine santorum winning the 60% or 70% of the votes in those states which tend to favor romney that santorum would need to win. you do have very favorable math on the part of romney. which is probably why i'm arguing that he does need to continue to say the right things to appeal to the base. but since he's got a considerable momentum if he's to have any hope of winning in november, he really, really needs to go to the center. >> the work

and that razor-thin victory means he's still poised to win the nomination, eventually. with such a tight race it won't be easy. romney took virginia, vermont, idaho, massachusetts. santorum won in tennessee, oklahoma, and north dakota. newt gingrich took only his home state of georgia. we're not going to be projecting a winner in the tenth state, alaska. where results from the caucuses this evening are still coming in. in a race that is just now still too close to call, the way it's gone all night. here's a closer look at how the republican races went down tonight. >> thank you. >> reporter: they were cheering mitt romney in boston tonight. but super tuesday was really only okay for him. sure, he won five states. including apparently the big prize of ohio, by a razor-thin margin. once again, he didn't seal the deal. >> i'm not going to let you down. i'm going to get this nomination. >> reporter: but his opponents aren't going anywhere. >> we're ready to win across this country. >> reporter: rick santorum won three states and almost grabbed ohio. and he was clearly feeli

if you want to commit an act of furtherance toward mitt romney getting the nomination, it does not matter whether or not you vote for mitt romney today in illinois. it's true. what you have to do, if you want to help mitt romney become the republican party's nominee for president is today in illinois, you would have had to vote for habib habib and january miller and david newberg. it does not matter who you vote for for president. it matters which individual delegate you vote for. let's say you hate this guy jimmy john or you hate one of these other people. you can't bring yourself to vote for one of these delegates because you had a dispute over the height of a fence. i don't know. you have some random personal dispute with one of the delegates. you do not have to vote for that delegate. you can pick all of the other people that are listed but not the guy you don't like. let's say maybe you're other delegate choice is jim hendrix. this is all hypothetical. he's for newt gingrich. you know this guy is a really nice guy even though you're thot for newt gingrich. that's okay. you can pick h
