we provide the rafting in the other trips we are hearing about. i grew up here in san francisco, and i got my first job in college with the wilderness program. i became a rough guide into a lot more kids out. this evening i have been surprised to hear a lot of people like the hiking bettas and rafting. how want to express sincere support for the wilderness program, not just for introducing me to a life of working, but all of the awesome trips we have been provided. all of the volunteer guides are people like you. they go with the youth and officers, we do white water rafting in the skiing. i believe in my youth leadership program that i did what i was 14, it came from a partnership between the lotus program. the of the good work. i would love to see more youth leaders we can employ and the program and have them doing what we do. >> my name is brandon jackson, i worked at the end of side district, i am a case manager. i've got the kids that were told they would never be nothing. and my goal at comes to that is to build self-esteem. it is hard to bu

this makes it slower and more difficult to remove the raft which is much the longest we have had. though composed almost entirely of cut drift. these photographs have been used extensively for books on the red river region and marley for louisiana history textbooks -- particularly for louisiana history textbooks for eighth grade students. so we're very, very pleased to have it. and there were two, actually, produced. one that accompanied the army corps of engineers' report to congress which is now in the library of congress and this one which, i think, appropriately lies here in the region of louisiana where the raft existed. a couple of these other photographs, we have many, many photographs of steamboats since this was the outcome of the clearing of the raft meant commerce for shreveport. and this, this particular photograph is of a steamboat, the washita, which is pulled up to commerce street which is the street bordering the live in shreveport. it looks quite a bit different than it does today. another area of our history that people are quite familiar with one way or other is

it was the last and most successful clearing of the red river raft, and it enabled st. part -- shreveport to become important for the rest of the 19th century. unfortunately for some of the crew, the aide, the army corps of engineers, their visit to shreveport coincided with the yellow fever epidemic of 73, which just decimated the population. the lt. eugene woodruff who was in charge of the raft clearing project the votes were caught up in the academic and decided to stay and incest. as a result he contract yellow fever himself and within two weeks she died and his brother george took over the project and completed. we have the papers of eugene and george woodruff here. they go with the album. this is one from george's mother in march of 1873. he says this week has not been a very eventful. the raft of draft number seven at which we were working last week has been removed, and after pulling some snags we proceeded to number eight. this is in a place where the river is narrowed and decided by the island and is shallow at least in that part chosen for the channel. this m

made of sheepskin, inflated and tied together, these rafts, called yangpi fazi, navigated the huang heor yellow river. by looking only at the huang he, you might think lanzhou is a wet place. in fact it only receives about 12 inches of rain a year. geographer chai yangwei, in the green, follows these farmers to see how they cope with such low rainfall. peculiar to agriculture in this area, these are called "stone fields." a thin layer of stones is spread over the surface of the field to hold in moisture. stone fields can be used for about eight years. constant upkeep is necessary, hower. this plot is two years old. the farmers are adding fertilir. if the soil becomes mixed with the stones, the efficiency of a stone field decreases, so stones must be carefully swept aside. the next step is to dign cow manure. finally the stones will bspread back. melons will be grown here for the modern city nearby. lanzhou is home to 2.6 million people. its historical geography holds clues to the future of western china. today lanzhou is the second-largest city in china's northwest and the capital of g

in 1873, in august, while they're working and close to finishing the raft, knocking it up, tearing it up, whatever they needed to do, yellow fever broke out in shreveport. and the army ordered this attachment out. eugene said these people need help, i am sending my men, i am saving my brother george, and i am staying to help. eugene stayed. he and five catholic priests acted as doctors because most of the doctors were dead. and eugene faithfully served. thought that he was going to be okay. felt okay. stayed with the same folks who are in this plot, the ellsners, and he comes down with it very quickly, very quickly. september 28th he gets it, by september 29th at 9:00 p.m., he's dead. city of shreveport wrote his mother and said we'd like to send his body home. and the telegraph lines were up, and she says no, that's where he wanted to stay. so the ellsnors allow him to be in this lot, and eugene is one of the true heroes not only in reconstruction but in the city of shreveport and in the south as well. >> i am mark farkas. i head up the local vehicle context. the purpose is to collec
