romney leading, santorum second, gingrich a close battle. on the big issue, governor romney seems to have a healthy lead. however, the budget deficit, in every state, republicans, economy first, budget deficit second. gingrich lead pretty decent lead over governor romney. they're splitting among the issues and governor romney among some and moves over on others. you might be surprised, how is governor romney competitive in both these deep southern states. maybe you think they're way more conservative than your state. look at this ideological breakdown. largely a white electorate but diverse. 42% in mississippi very conservative, 27% somewhat conservative. 30% describe themselves as moderate to liberal in this deep south. and almost identical numbers in albany, 38% very, 31% somewhat conservative and 31% moderate or liberal. perhaps it's not as deeply conservative as one might expect. you know the questions, can he win. this is a big test, the highest number of all the contests we've had so far, mississippi has the highest percentage of people

we don't expect senator santorum to make it up there. romney winning in the blue collar areas of youngstown and akron. senator santorum is winning big in smaller rural areas but a smaller percentage of voters there and all the counties are in. if you go through here. 100% of the vote in. 100% of the vote in. 100% of the vote in. i can go on and on. so a sweeping win for santorum in the rural counties of ohio, but the big victories by governor romney in the cities and the suburbs have him ahead. not a huge win. but romney will get the most dell gatds out of ohio, because senator santorum didn't qualify for all of them. this is what it's all about. looking at the map going forward, governor romney desperately wants this to be romney red coming out of super tuesday. if it is the case, he will have 13 wins on his side. seven for santorum, two for speaker gingrich. a lot of conversations why isn't it bigger, why can't you win in tennessee? prove yourself in the south. there will be a lot of question marks. a lot of question marks, a lot of talk abou

romney did better with nonevangelicals but among catholics, rick santorum also led romney 43 to 32%. and another familiar pattern in this primary tonight is the split among income groups. rick santorum got a lot more support from lower income voters and mitt romney only won the very wealthiest. among voters whose family income was less than $36,000, santorum won. what do you make of that? >> we talk about the evangelical factor there. i wonder how much of this really is about religion. there's two ways of interpreting it. if you look at, you know, supposedly romney struggles with conservative voters. if you really look at exit polls carefully, he's struggling among conservative voters who identify themselves as evangelicals. if you just look at conservative no if it's really a religious problem and it comes out in a state like louisiana or mississippi or alabama, the two theories that come to mind are, one, is the mormon faith an obstacle voters can't get past, and the other is is this about abortion? >> chris, to some degree there's a question of whether it even matters, right? at th

santorum. with mitt romney finishing in second place. analysts had predicted louisiana could be a three-way race between santorum, mitt romney and newt gingrich. now keep in mind, santorum won the primaries in neighboring alabama and mississippi, but analysts say voters in louisiana are a bit different. for example, that state has fewer people who identify themselves as evangelical, a group that tends to resonate with santorum. but tonight he had support from everyone, including conservatives and moderates alike, and it didn't hurt that mitt romney did damage control this week after an aide made comments comparing his campaign strategy to that of an etch-a-sketch. 1 in 5 voters said today those comments were "most important or one of the most important factors" in their decision at the polling booth. in this race for the gop presidential nomination,i deleg. louisiana with 46 at stake. only 20 of those, though, to be given after tonight's contest divided proportionately to the candidates who get more than 25% of the vote. the rest will be

romney still wins. >> still has 1190. and you need 1144. santorumould not only have to do what i did, he would have to take away one of the big winner take all. we don't expect him to win montana, south dakota. no more small gains out there. he would have to in june take away california. even look at that. even under the scenario i've been generous. that doesn't get him there. maybe he has to win california and new jersey. is that possible? yes. is it probable based on everything we've seen so far? no. they're complaining about romney's cash advantage in a state like new jersey. advertising in new york in a huge state like california. resources matter. so i'm being incredibly generous here. most people would say that's hard to believe and that's hard to believe. and even if the santorum campaign could change all that, if they can't change the winner take alls, new jersey and california, that gets romney there. can he be stopped? yes. if he wins illinois tonight by a large margin, that's steeper. >> and no matter what happens in louisiana this coming

we had a little dustup with romney and santorum yesterday because it gave romney an edge in the count. everyone is claiming to have more delegates than the numbers suggest. >> part of what you do is if you haven't lost in the popular vote you talk about delegates, because you can say, as santorum tried to the day after the vote, look, i tied 15 delegates to 15 delegates with mitt romney, so in fact i won. >> only it didn't turn out that way. >> his argument was i won because i went so far into mitt romney's home turf and got 15 delegates, so hurray for me. the problem with santorum was he needed a big knockout to get big momentum. but in terms of the numbers, romney is well ahead and has organization in future states where the numbers give him part of his edge and why people think -- gwen: the other problem for santorum is he's not organized enough to get all his delegates slates up. >> gingrich is not on the ballot in virginia and didn't get all the delegate slates in ohio. he has a shoestring operation. but it's remarkable to try to cover him. there's almost no infrastructure whatso

i still think that will romney's biggest challenge is not to continue to find rick santorum as much of an insider as everybody else that the republican electorate would not want him. mitt romney's challenge is to come up with a story about himself, his experience and his vision for where he wants to take the country. right now he doesn't get out there and tell a story every day. i just think that is a missing component for him, and i don't think we've seen that this message of rick santorum as an insider has been sufficient to sort of turn away the republican conservative base. we still see rick strum doing quite well with conservative voters, the very same voters most repulsed by washington insider dom and the spending. this doesn't seem to be gaining traction as an issue. >> with the romney campaign talking about the path and the inevitability of romney getting the republican nomination, will we hear and see sharper attacks from the santorum campaign when it comes to issues like obama care, romney care or other wedge issues that we've heard everywhere rick santorum but not as consist

ohio voters broke for governor romney in a big way. 41% to santorum's 33%. gingrich and paul are way behind with the voters worried about the economy. another big demographic that broke for romney, we have updated numbers, working women by an eight-point margin. santorum with 35%. >> nevertheless, we can see newt gingrich, you can get the sense that rick santorum, whatever he did, he kept himself as close as possible. do we know what it was he did that put him into that position? >> in ohio you have to look at the independent. the independent decide open primaries like ohio and the general elections down the line. they gave santorum an edge. six points ahead of romney. speaker gingrich lagged among the independents. santorum had the support of the tea party voters. santorum won more comfortably when it came to christians at 47% to romney's 30. but it wasn't enough to help them win. a win is a win for romney. >> you are right. but those exit polls, those fox exit polls do tell a lot for the story. thanks, peter. >> and for more reaction on the exit polls and w
