on the senate floor earlier today remarks by the republican leader mitch mcconnell from kentucky. >> we've had severe storms and tornadoes that cut through the midwest yesterday, including hitting my state of kentucky. people across the blue grass state are still recovering this morning from considerable damage caused by very severe weather. the national weather service has confirmed four tornadoes struck in kentucky with winds of up to 125 miles per hour. these funnel clouds were sighted in elizabethtown, eastern grayson county, larue county and the home of abraham lincoln's birth place. in all the national weather service has confirmed at least 16 tornadoes across the country through seven states, nebraska, kansas, missouri, illinois, tennessee, indiana and kentucky. over 300 reports of severe weather across the region described frightening details such as wind gusts of over 80 miles per hour and golf size hail storms. there were reports of power outages for thousands of people particularly in my home town of louisville. downed power lines, flash flooding were reported all across th

the most impacted areas so far appear to be indiana, parts of kentucky, alabama, alabama and tennessee were among those hit several days ago with 13 people killed if those storms. and, also, a town of marysville, in indiana, the clark county sheriff said that the town is completely gone. we did not know any more than that. a lot of you, obviously, try to call or follow-up on what that means and we know around that area folks remain given a lot of warning and some as early as last night so you hope that many of them not only stayed home but got out of harm's way, period. we are told many businesses, schools, and hospitals where they could be, were shut down, emergency personnel available, obviously, in those areas. but you always hope those that have been given the advanced warning got out of harm's way because at this juncture we have no report of any fatalities or injuries in the latest wave and by my count and i could be wrong, 11 tornadoes throughout the south and southeast. all at a time when a lot of the communities are hurting tore cash and we as a nation are dealing with a big i

joining us now on the phone, john gordon, meteorologist near kentucky. john, what can you tell us about the area and what you are hearing about the damage throughout this area? >> bret, that is going on, we had super cell thunderstorms producing storms in indiana. we're in the process we are still issuing tornado warnings south and east of louisville area. significant damage obviously. loss of life in southern indiana, which we are very sad about. we're still trying to issue warnings from the national weather service to protect life and property across kentucky and the eastern side, cutting toward the lexington area. south of there right now. >> bret: just to be clear, for people listening in. warning means a tornado has been sighted or is on the ground somewhere. people need to act quickly. >> bret: absolutely. the prediction center put out a dangerous situation this morning. we had information out for five days and it doesn't mitigate the storms or damage. these are destructive. >> bret: issued in alabama z illinois, indiana, kentucky, and north carolin

we do not expect the severe weather expected to break out toward kentucky and tennessee, to hit us but we will start to see some of the rain moving in by late this evening. by overnight hours rumbles of thunder. this is the result of warm moist air ahead of it on the eastern side, cold air from the rockies and a strong jet stream kind of spinning it all up, creating rotation and we are getting the thunderstorms april the tornadoes as a result. so this is something that we are going to be watching through the evening. right now 51 degrees at bwi marshal. that is our temperature. 30 your dew point, 44% humidity, a southeast 10 wind at 10 miles an hour, 50 at oakland, 51 at the airport and 49 there. those are your currents in those locations. southeast winds coming in bringing moisture but also mild air. 18 mile per hour winds in haggerstown, 10 at the airport, 13 elkton, winds winds pick up through the afternoon. look at the temperatures around memphis and atlanta. this is the line where the thunderstorms are taking hold. it is right along that lane, right around the kentucky and tenness

it's been a terrible time for the citizens of kentucky and the damage has been widespread from parts tucky, eastern kentucky, along the ohio river. we are seeing damages in lots of places. governor steve basheer and lieutenant governor jerry abramson with both traveling the state today, taking a look at the damage, visiting our shelters and determining what sort of assistance we need to help communities get whack back on their feet. at this point, we have national guard troops on the ground in five counties that have been heavily damaged to assist with security, with clearing roads, with checking on the security of our citizens. it's going to be a very difficult few days coming up. and we appreciate the assistance that we've received, not only from our citizens, but also from the media, frankly. the assistance that we've had from your teams to warrant our families and warn our communities was a help to get the word out. >> well, in terms of getting you more help, what do you need right now? >> at this point, we're still trying to gather that sort of information. if people feel compell

this is the chapel of a funeral home right here on main street in west liberty, kentucky. you can see the storm came through yesterday. ripped this wall off. most of the roof off. you just see the pews here. this is minor damage compared to what we saw farther up main street. this hundred is on lockdown, search-and-rescue crews finish up their work. we did get a tour earlier to some exclusive access. this is west liberty, kentucky. hit hard pie friday night's tornados. this is the mobile command center they set up here. this town is on lockdown as they focus on search and rescue. here is why they need that command center. this until last night was the police department. this right here is a police car that was flipped on its side. you can see the destruction as this tornado tore through here friday night around 7:00. some buildings like this one completely leveled. you can see piles of brecks. you can see the spray paint from agencies searching, establishing there is nobody trapped in here. that's the focus right now is search-and-rescue here. it's painstaking work. they ha

the storm is through them about 40, 50 miles north of louisville, kentucky. we'll show you the radar. this is cincinnati. there's national. there's the line of showers and thunderstorms. the deeper red filled in, that's actually tornado warnings at this hour. we'll zoom in more. these are storm reports. all these red things are the tornado reports, numerous reports of hail, which is often the case. storms that have hail often have tornadoes and vice versa. i shouldn't say that. most storms that have tornadoes have hail and that's certainly the case here. so from madison down toward louisville and henryville is just north of louisville massive damage again. the storms are moving eastward. we're in pretty good shape in the stable atmosphere. so we're just looking at some rain and showers, heavy activity pushed east of us and we really have a break in the precipitation back to the west. we'll probably have brake for the next several hours once this last little -- a break for the next several hours once this last little bit moves through. the watch has been expand

it did go over marysville and across the river into kentucky. ow into the frankfurt, kentucky area is not a maxi tornado situation. it's pretty big, but not that much of a tornado maker, but a gust maker. it may blow the windows or shake you a bit, but the only place i would see rotation is now down farther to lawrenceburg. now, the other issue is what's going on in nashville, wolf. this is obviously a highly populated area. we've had reports of golf ball-sized hail. it is moving through rather quickly. there's an appendage down here. i'm very concerned about this. this can sometimes lead to a tornado developing right here. we go across the other side, from about brentwood to the east. if you need to take cover, get out of everything, you said to be in your basement from forest hills, brentwood and points eastward, but from nashville northward, you're pretty much in the clear. >> don't go too far away. we're going to check in with all of our reporters who are on the scene. rob marciano is out there as well. much more on the breaking news coverage
