paul wagner reports on the courtroom drama. >> nathaniel became emotional as he spent two hours on the stand answering detailed questions about his life and the time leading up to two attacks in march of 2010. sims was tearful as he described his son as a drug dealer. and his relationship with carter rings orlando cay carter, robert bost, and lemar williams. sims who plead guilty identified all five of the defendants and pointed them out in a series of photographs. in questioning from the prosecutor, what started it all? a bracelet. this one that san juan said was stolen from him on march 2 #, 2010. carter called his brother, orlando, who recruited sims and another man get his prase let back. we turned them. a valley of automatic weapon st fired. several family members left the courtroom in tiers. >> it was hard for me to sit up in there and listen go how my son got killed. with that ak47. so i just, you know, i can't stand up there. >> the mohr of jordan hao who was killed that night. she has no sympathy for nathaniel sims. >> evil. evil. even though he is state evidence, he is still

the same general who had ordered the disastrous attack on fort wagner led an expedition to florida in 18 -- february 1864. his advancing column met a force of confederate defenders and was badly beaten but the 54th massachusetts, along with several white regiments, covered the retreat and in effect saved the whole army. the 54th had learned a lot in the previous seven months. the 8th u.s. colored infantry had a similar learning curve. it went into battle at old lusty in florida with many of the men having never fired their rifles. it lost 343 officers and men killed, wounded and missing. but that august in an attack near richmond, virginia, the general who commanded their brigade thought that he behaved handsomely. on the gulf coast, the 73rd u.s. colored infantry failed to reach the confederate trenches in their charge at port hudson in may 1863. but in april 1865 the regiment was part of the black division that helped take the last confederate for the outside mobile. it was all a question of training and experience. i might add a few words in favor of william tekumse sherman before

paul wagner has more. paul? >> reporter: the arrests were announced today saying they were arrested for a ring leader of the underground crypts. he and 10 others were charged with networking to get the girls and force them into prostitution. they would recruit them at high schools and social networking sites and go to metro stops and bus stops to try to recruit the girls. authorities believe that they have found 10 victims but believe there is many more. according to the affidavit, strong, dove, jeffreys and gilley used facebook and myspace to recruit the girls, telling them they were good looking and asked if they would like to make moneyever they agreed, there would be a gang initiation and the girls would be sexed in. the girls would be advertised on backpage.com or craig's list and the girls would be escorted around. sometimes they would go to apartment complexes where there was a large population of young men. >> and ages ranged 2916, 17, and 18, somewhere older. typically they would work for several weeks

paul wagner joins us live from the newsroom with the exclusive story paul. >> reporter: well, when she was arrested in march last year federal court affidavit claimed the officer was sinking cash from drug proceeds into real estate in ohio pennsylvania maryland laundering money for her boyfriend the document also claimed the officer was taking information from her police computer, and using it to assist in a conspiracy, serious charges for sure. when she was arrested in march last year she had already spent 8 years on the force, patrolling the streets of wheaton conducting trade investigations and working as a -- fraud investigations and working as a school resource officer. the arrest on federal charges left her stunned beyond belief. >> i can't even describe, i mean anger isment matily what is going through my head, -- ultimately what is going through my head then i am going through a place of what is going on i really didn't understand it. >> reporter: sitting in a cell she was given a copy of the charges a 9 page affidavit quoting four unnamed confidential informants who gave inves

as fox 5's paul wagner explains, it was all stolen or counterfeit. >> reporter: when police stepped inside this shop to begin their search, it resembled a general store that you might have visited back in the day. in addition to a cut, customers could also shop for jeans, body wash, phones, electronics, even deterningent. >> the set-up was such that in the back of spot store beyond where the barbers were cutting people's hair, you had these elaborate glass shelving units where you can find stolen phones, dove body wash, counterfeit jeans. beyond that, in the back room, investigators found a locked office that was filled with additional stolen products. >> reporter: miss all found toothpaste, watches and knock joffe taalian shoes. there were even containers for shipping. >> besides the fact that someone could walk in off the street and either get their hair cut or buy these stolen items, there were also large shipping containers that detectives believe were being used to ship these yams to the black markets overseas. >> reporter: police arrested four men, william smith, damian marbury, gera

fox 5's paul wagner has the story seen first on fox 5. >> the d.c.ice department has been without the use of breath lives for the better part of two years -- breathalyzers for the better part of two years after a contractor found some of the numbers weren't adding up. some of the machines were not calibrated properly and delivering dubious results. the department tried to get the program up and running again with different protocols, but by last february the chief ordered the machines out of service. today in front of the city council's judiciary committee the chief defended the department's current approach to enforcement. you haven't backed off drunk driving enforcement? >> absolutely not. you think backing off impaired driving, 1,300 plus arrests in a single year, that's a lot of arrests. we have a very good program. >> for now urine samples are taking the place of breathalyzers, a costly less precise way to measure a driver's impairment, but it does have its benefit. >> that breath life is really to determine the level of -- breathalyzer is reall
