maybe dianne feinstein can own a home, but i cannot, and my friends cannot, and a lot of us are renting. another aspect of the issue beyond foreclosures that came up and other comments is in the 2006 u.s. census, there was around 32,000 vacant housing units in san francisco, which means presumably there is more that are unregistered, all of this while we have, as someone said, we have 7000 or 8000, it depends on who you ask, homeless people in the city, and people are dying literally on the streets while other people are keeping these homes. beyond the foreclosure crisis, beyond what is happening to the middle class is what is happening to the rest of us. capitalism is the real crisis, and it is an impressive system, and these problems with housing are not going to be resolved until the dissolution of capitalism. also, a supervisor mar, you were thinking a lot of people, but you did not think one group for their cameras help since 1992, and they are making use of vacant housing, and i would encourage everybody on this body to support that in to support efforts such as the sf commune. jo

senator dianne feinstein says it has a big price tag but will also bring huge economic returns to silicon valley. >> oh, it produces tens of thousands of jobs. it gets people to the workplace quickly. it begins to build the infrastructure for the millennium. >> reporter: a second phase of the project would bring b.a.r.t. service all the way to san jose and to santa clara's caltrain station but funding for that phase still has not been secured. a congressman is optimistic federal funding, which accounts for about 40% of the total, will eventually come through. >> it's in the president's budget. i'm on appropriations and i'll help to get it. >> reporter: under current projections, it will be at least six years before b.a.r.t. trains roll into san jose, but passengers are glad to see a light at the end of the tunnel. >> i think it will be more convenient for people, save time and save money too. it will be really good for the environment too. >> long overdue. we'll definitely go to san francisco more often. >> reporter: and the project is expected to have a big impact on jobs, bringing about

a woman who managed, as campaign treasurer, dozens of promised campaigns including dianne feinstein, estimated a loss of $5 million in the embezzlement. why this went on for years is still a mystery. we did a story back in 2004 that linked her to a phony campaign committee for barack obama. it was unauthorized. he was raising money. yet it took this long. it's a sad case. a lot of campaigns have been wipe the out and feinstein, of course, is suing her. still the fact we saw some closure, we have yet to see what kind of sentence she'll get in the case. >> a little miracle of another kind in washington, d.c., a bill called the jobs bill actually pass whidbey partisan support. what happened? and what is this bill? >> well it was a bill -- it is a bill that's going to obama's desk, we think, as early as this week, and it basically relaxes regulation so that start-ups can get more money, or money earlier in their growth. there's parts of kniss bill and obama came up with some of the ideas in the state of the union. eric cantor grabbed six bills in the house, and called it the jobs act, an

so dianne, please. >> i mean, that's the point that i've been thinking about as we talk about this, what's gotten lost in this conversation is remembering what those kinds of loans were. that led to the crisis, it led to the collapse, it led to financial calamity across the world. it was toxic loans, loans that were made to people largely refinanced loans without any expectation that people would be able to pay them back. when you look at the numbers, african-americans of all income stripes and the better their credit was, the more likely they were to get a subprime loan. compared to similar white borer. african-americans with good credit, with fico scores over 680 were almost three times as likely as similar white borrowers to get a subprime loan. those were the loans. they were sucking wealth out of communities where they had built up wealth. even before the crisis, those loans led to foreclosure rates 30 times higher in some areas than prime loans. it was the kind of loans that were made that drove this crisis. and we have forgotten that when we have these conversations.
