a group of volunteer divers has just entered the water along doolittle drive in oakland. night team search very difficult of course. john is right there for us live. john? >>reporter: dan as you mention the divers got in the water short time ago. this is going to be a long pain-staking operation tonight that could go 5 or 6 hours. make no difference that it is dark out because in that murky water they captain see much any way. let me step aside and see the operation along the shoreline of the vl area from the oakland airport. these are members of the alameda county sheriff's office dive team. volunteer unit that does lat a lot of search and rest caw work. they were called in to help find what officers from oakland believe could be the weapon in this area. they have been here since about 8:30. few of them threw in an object about the same weight of a gun to kind of test how far it would go. searching about 90 feet from the shore and about 75 to 100 feet along the shoreline. they are basically 1 or 2 divers in the water at any given time on the shore see them working a line
