you heard ed gillespie. we've heard governor romney saying this is squarely going to be an issue of the economy and how women in this economy if you want to focus on that particular voting group, how they are fairing. you heard ed gillespie go through his version of the record for president obama when it comes to women. as he said, women are not stupid and they are going to still vote on the economy. how do you respond to that? >> well, i think sometimes you listen to the romney campaign, and they do think a lot of people in this country are stupid. because, david, their message is, you didn't clean up our mess fast enough. okay? as i said, we've had 11 consecutive months of positive economic growth. 25 consecutive months of positive private sector job growth. the republicans, again, they want to return to the policies -- not of strengthening the middle class, but instead of giving tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires, they want to make health care and contraceptive decisions. they want to put those d

but there's a female gender gap opening up, 18 points, ed gillespie. what is the republican party going to do about that female gender gap? >> both parties have had a gender gap historically going back decades where republicans outperform with male voters and democrats outperform with female voters. the importance is the size of the gap and we need to close that gap going into november. once we get out of the primary and have standard barer to carry the case against president obama's poll circumstance you'll see a lot of those women move toward the republican nominee. can i understand why a lot of women voters and a lot of men voters may be turned off by the negativity in the republican party primary. that's the nature of those primaries, but i think when there's a clear choice between president obama and his policies and the republican nominee, who i believe will be governor romney, and his policies, we'll fix that gap and narrow it. >> last one in the news today, there's also an hispanic voting gap for republicans. my thought is everybody wants to pu

saw reports that long time gop campaign strategist ed gillespie will be adviser to romney camp. is there worry that gillespie, karl rove, other operatives will bring an attack strategy to hurt the president in the court of public opinion? >> the attack strategy has to be premised on rebuilding romney, no matter how you talk about it. i think ed, who is very talented, has been hired as the etch a sketcher in chief. he is supposed to get romney to a position where he is not upside down the way voters feel of him in polls. he is in mid-30s. you can't get elected president that way, can't get across the 50% threshold in terms of general election by saying the kinds of things we heard a few minutes ago. well, he promised unemployment would never go up. ronald reagan did the same thing. unemployment went up. it then came down. as it steadily went down through election year, ronald reagan got reelected. what's happening now is we're seeing the economy constantly improving. romney is losing his rationale, message, narrative. he said i'm the ceo that can fix the economy, create jobs. gue
