we know what choices they made in the house republican budget. again.ose to protect these tax break for big oil companies themselves chose to vote again the buffett rule that says millionaires should have the same forgetive tax rate as their secretary. and yet in their budget they chose to ask 7 million american students to see their interest rates double, which is about $1,000 more per year. so those are their priorities in the budget. we'll have to see which way they go now that mitt romney may have at least switched for political convenience. i wonder now if he also agrees that we should not end the medicare guarantee. the house republican budget would ask seniors to bear all the risks and costs of increased medicare expenses. is he going to turn around on that as well now? that's the problem. >> we'll let you know on that, depending on which way the wind is blowing tomorrow. thank you, sir, for joining us. >>> next on this super tuesday, the question must be asked, why are we paying for newt gingrich's secret service protection? if you're one of tho

first, i'm going to ask you about house republican leadership. politico had a story about peace talks between your staff and the spiker's staff. why can't you get along? >> we get along fine. we really do. there's a noeg within your profession that we don't get along. the speaker and i meet on a regular basis onon one and in groups. >> let many accurate about this. this is not a notion. there is a reality to differences between those two. >> i can tell you we get along. we've got a professional relationship. we've got personal relationships. and we're able to manage as a speaker and a majority leader should manage in a way that allows our conference to function. we have regular communication. i think there is a fascination where it's really misguided. does that situation bother you. do you think you should do more to correct it? >> i think the fascination -- misplaced fascination on the part of the press is something that no longer bothers me. >> you're saying there's no reality to it at all. >> okay. >> as you know at the white house they're pra

they put the president's budget on one side and the budget from house republicans on the other. you now have a very clear idea of where each party would take the country if they could. >> if you never want taxes increased, this is what happens to social insurance. if you only want to increase taxes on the wealthy, this is where the debt ratio winds up, perhaps it's not stabilized enough. and these are the real issues the voters have to understand and then answer in the election. >> reporter: the differences are really quite striking. in their budget, house republicans cut taxes deeply and cut federal spending so deeply that there's not much left of the federal government beyond defense, social security and a slimmed down medicare. the president's budget raises taxes on the wealthy, but even then, federal debt only stabilizes and that's if you use some very generous assumptions. and both republican and democratic budgets ignore the really big enchilada. there's no policy to deal with the retirement of the baby boomers. and short term budget cuts, are just that, a short-term fix.

it's because the republicans took control of the house. they said they were going to focus on jobs, jobs, jobs and then hr 3 literally their third bill, was an anti abortion bill. it's because republicans said they were going to play hardball and shot down the government over the new found excitement over fiscal conservatism. when it came down to, they threatened to shut down the government over funding for planned parenthood. it's because they consulted this all-male witness table and because republicans in the senate voted unanimously, except for olympia snow, to roll back access to contraception and even after they realized how that looked and got shy on the issue in the house, republicans in the house still moved last week in committee on yet another federal anti-abortion bill. these are not things that democrats are not just accusing republicans of doing. these are not things that the media is making up about republicans. this is your life. this is what republicans do. under your leadership. they are voting to eliminate federal funding

while the ryan budget, the house republican budget is generally seen as more of a liability than an asset republicans running for higher office today, because a lot of its ideas are particularly unpopular, particularly those around medicare, the progressive caucus budget is made up of policies that poll really, really well. that are very popular when you go out and ask real-life humans about them. the progressive budget, for example, calls for ending the bush tax cuts for the wealthiest americans. it calls for letting those tax cuts expire at the the end of the year. that idea is wildly popular when you ask americans about it. 68% of americans say they are for letting the bush tax cuts for the wealthiest americans expire. only 29% of americans say they are opposed to that. the progressive budget also calls for ending taxpayer subsidies for the oil and gas companies. again, a whopping majority of americans say yes to that. 74%. that's a great idea! let's do it. 74% say yes. in order to deal with our giant deficit, the progressive budget calls for a temporary surcharge on net worth over $10
