let me turn to john carney.he problem with goldman has been its public relations work here and even mr. blankfein admitted that. do you think they're starting to turn it around? >> i do. i think this is a major change for them. we haven't seen lloyd blankfein talking to cnbc or anybody else for that matter for about two years. having him come out publicly i think should help the firm. they tried to sort of hide behind the scenes for a long time. that didn't work out. it's actually been a disastrous policy. so having lloyd sit there, smile, show that he's a human being, that he's willing to talk, that they have nothing to hide is a very, very good thing for the firm. >> and, gary, back to you now. just pick up there on the thought. this looks like goldman trying to turn around what had been notably bad fortunes in the public affairs area. >> i agree with john. and john knows. this is an attempt, and it's the beginning of an attempt for people to understand more about the business. go back to alec baldwin, exactly

and cnbc.com's john carney here with us here. how do you fix yahoo!r one, jon fortt. >> i've been putting a lot of thought into this. one, pick your battles. right now yahoo! is fighting with investors. dan loeb a third point with investments over in asia and also with what would be partners like facebook. they really got to pick one. number two, they need to decide what yahoo! is. is it a media company or platform company? if it's a media company, they need to staff up on media creators and buy technology. if it's a platform company, they need to staff up on techs and buy the media. they need to get rid probably of everything else. then, finally, they need to stop believing their own hype. they talk a lot about how many eyeballs they've got. unprofitable eyeballs, eyeballs you can't monetize are like unprofitable revenue. doesn't really count. >> they wanted to get more nimble. i didn't think yahoo! had so much a problem with nimbleness but rather what jon fortt just touched on which is the idea that what do they stand for? >> i think that's absolute

joining us now to talk about this latest pr gaffe, if that is totally what it is, is cnbc.com's john carneyress ler with "new york magazine." let me begin by asking you, jessica, that this was a long standing investment made years ago by a private equity fund run by goldman sachs that they fundamentally just lost track of despite the fact that they had a guy until 2010 on the board of the company, village voice media. is this a question of them not doing their due diligence or losing track of an investment? >> well, goldman invested in this online classified firm in about 2000. so it was really kind of a long time ago. it wasn't then a sex ad's website. it was just kind of a normal classified ads thing. it didn't really start getting the revenue from these ads until 2010 when craigslist shut down its adult services ads. and then by then that was when the goldman managing director that was on the board had stepped down. so they could plausibly claim they didn't know. that's really embarrassing for goldman because they're supposed to be really smart as they tell us all the time. so but they c

and we're joined also by john carney, cnbc.com net-net senior editor., there's something in these internet ipos -- let me call them that though they really aren't in some ways, reminds me of 1999-2000. am i way off base on that? >> i got to say, don't forget about yelp, which isn't doing that badly. and don't forget about jive software. the sort of enterprise social networking player that's actually up nearly double from its offer price. those are important to consider too. >> you can pick the good ones, you can pick the bad ones. are these good business? that was the issue back then. there were these companies that had big valuations that weren't really producing any profit. >> i think these are good businesses, but whether they're good investments at the ipo is a good question. i've warned people about this zynga. maybe if you're a cautious investor, sit around and wait to see how the company's performed. they're going public before they have a lot of performance results. you can wait. >> i'm going to put you on the spot. let's say facebook comes out
