>> juan carlos lopez, we know that of course the name of senator rubio has been coming up because he's strong potentially in the state of florida but what about outside of the state of florida? does he have the national appeal you might need? >> he's working on it and he is out there and he's getting those credentials. does he have that national recognition? not yet, he's working on it. to be completely honest, there isn't a name right now that you could throw out and say well this is a latino that will resonate in every state. but latinos aren't one group, we're not one homogeneous, solid group. there are different groups among the latino community, six or seven out of ten hispanics are mexican or mexican descent. there's not one issue. but senator rubio is one of 100 in a country of 311 million. he's one of two hispanic senators and he gets a lot of coverage in the media, so he is working his way up there. >> mr. gonzalez, you said the republican party needs to do a better job in outreach to latinos. when you look at mitt romney and think of some of the things that he has said on the

juan carlos lopez going in depth in texas. so national survey last week, juan carlos had obama leading romney among latino voters 61% to 27%. how can romney climb? >> reporter: it's going to be interesting to see what he does now. we had the primary season. we heard him talk about important issues to latinos and non latinos, but so far, the polls are proving his positions, which were tough on immigration and other issues didn't convince latinos. now, he's at 27%. for a republican to win, they need anywhere above 35%. the last one to do that was george bush. he had a very aggressive campaign and mitt romney hasn't done that. so far and we'll see if he has time for november to change his message and to bring latinos on board. he has a strategy. president obama has a wider lead. there are questions and doubts from latinos and republicans, but obviously, we see the numbers confirm what has been historically a trend and that's up for more democrats than republicans. >> we talked a lot about immigration and romney's views. how that i

juan carlos lopez is in texas where the republican presidential primary will be held tomorrow and weer the top with the number of delegates to clinch the nomination. but where you are is a very important backdrop for this critical issue of the latino vote. >> yes, jim and in the last ten years, at least a 2010 census shows that texas grew by 4 million new residentses, 55% of those new residentses are hispanic. so texas received four new congressional districts. it went through the federal courts, it went to the supreme court in washington, and people are confused. we spoke with some of them, i guess the interest is to see if people are going to go to vote or not, if they're interested, if they're motivated. the process is clear that it still isn't over. >> i think these people keep changing it to benefit one side or another and they should just keep it one way. >> a nonminority may get elected or even a minority, i think they should do it in a nonpartisan way n a way that's fair. >> i think what's exciting about 2012 is that we really are at the tipping point. so if the vote doesn't
