political reporter pat warren is there and explains what happens next. hi, pat. >> hi, kai. good evening, everybody. the maryland general assembly has made it so that some marylanders will be writing bigger checks and receiving smaller refunds. >> reporter: governor o'malley takes in the sun at a public event, while his tax hike foes take him over the coals. >> and the government talked about every manner of tax increase. he wanted a sales tax increase, a gas tax increase. i couldn't keep track. they were coming out so -- every other day. i couldn't keep track of which proposal he was proposing next. >> reporter: today, he got an income tax increase. although the proposal originated in the house. and that's where it got final approval today. >> majority is declared past. >> reporter: 87% of the people of the state of maryland will have no increase, no increase in their taxes. 87%. and those who do and who make a quarter of a million dollars, they will be paying $6.50 a week extra. >> reporter: single filer increases. tax filing jointly, no increase up to $150,000. one dollar

political reporter pat warren has more on what taxpayers can expect. pat? >> reporter: that's right, kai. the goal was to raise the tax rates to limit some exemptions and eliminate other exemptionsault. now -- altogether. the house is in the process now of debating the senate package. and the governor and speaker of the house are working to make sure there are enough volts in the house-- votes in the house to make sure it passes the senate today. >>> it's a graduated increase that will have a bigger impact on some parts of the state than others. high earners, for example, in carol, cecil, harford, and prince george's counties, are likely to pay $236 more. others are likely to see increases between $437 and $704. the highest increases are likely to affect residents in baltimore county, montgomery and talbot counties, ranging from $705, to $955 more this year. >> and keep in mind that those higher tax rates apply to people who file singly, who make $100,000 a year. those who file jointly, making $150,000 a year or more. reporting live from annapolis, i'm pat warren. back to you. >> pat, th

kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. >> we begin tonight with breaking news. baltimore's top cop is retiring a short time ago. fred bealefeld announces he is leading the job. pat warren with more on this still developing story. pat? >> that's right. this is one of the longest- serving police commissioners in recent history. commissioner fred bealefeld is probably also one of the most surprising announcements we've seen in quite a long time. rather than hold a joint news conference as you might expect, the commissioner and the mayor, both decided to issue statements in a single news release. >> in a ribbon statement, mayor rawlings-blake says, while i am saddened to see his retirement, i respect his decision to retire to spend more time with his family. i know he loved the job and was proud to serve with honest and integrity. >> in his written statement, commissioner bealefeld says this was a very tough decision for me and my family. but it's now the right time for me to bring my career with the baltimore police department to a close. i am very proud of the men and women of the bpd, for all that we have been able to accomplish together over the last five years. and i

political reporter pat warren has more on what taxpayers can expect in the next two days. good evening, pat. >> reporter: good evening, kai. good evening, everybody. the plan that is under consideration here in the general assembly, puts the burd own what the state considers to be maryland's wealthiest residents. but that is still creating a backlash. >> reporter: outside the statehouse, the political action group, americans for prosperity protests what is happening inside. >> we're here with a simple message. governor o'malley in annapolis, live within your means. >> the house and senate are expected to impose an income tax hike on 6% of the state's earners. single filers with an adjusted breathe income of up to $100,000 will see no change. there's a quarter percent increase on every dollar over $100,000, which brings your tax rate up from four and three- quarters to 5%. taxpayers filing jointly will see no change up to $150,000. and then the same formula applies. a quarter percent increase on the dollar so the tax rate goes up from 4 3/4ths% to 5%. >> we don't have to do this. we could instead choose to simply cut educa

warren buffett refusing to comment on a tech company. >> how investors are feeling about this pending offer, kay la?he may not be buying facebook shares, but there were hundreds figurely to hear facebook speak. they ate cob salad and grilled them on everything from advertising to zinga to, are they happy? will revenue growth grow and can the company muscle its way into china and how zuckerberg felt about the instagram deal. he said would he do it again. he did that deal three weeks ago. so we were hoping won't have second thoughts just yet. this is nearly public company expected to trade on the nasdaq about may 18. it has a week between new and when it trades. investors will have lots more questions for the company especially after today's question and answer session was cut a little bit short. investors had to wait a long time to get in. management started late and they show the road show video and shareholders are hoping to get the full hour to ask questions. nevertheless they with send questions to investors in silicon valley, baltimore and across the country. we will live with all of the updates
