joining me, frank yang, partner at the yang-hart research group.e president's approval rating. 48%. historically, where does he need to get that number to lock in reelection? >> you know, i think historically, if a president is over 50%, he's in pretty good shape for reelection. so, you know, five months to go in the campaign, the president -- it's going to be a tough race, but i think the president has the upper edge right now. >> one of the things that struck us about this poll, the early reads on the congressional race, specifically. let's switch to those. the poll shows preference pretty much split across the board when it comes to who someone might vote for congress. >> you know, i think so. i think one of the unknown variables is every ten years, all the congressional districts are redrawn because of the census. i think both parties are making what that is. that may artificially inflate one side or the other. i think in general, in terms of public opinion, this is a 50/50 election for congress. i think there's a good chance on paper democrats

good morning to you, i'm eun yang. >> good morning, i'm aaron gilchrist. welcome to "news4 today" on this wednesday, may 30. new this morning, fire forces two family out of their homes. the fires in northwest d.c. and in silver spring both happened just around midnight. we were there when firefighters arrived at the first house on n street in northwest just before midnight. the fire damaged a bedroom and a back porch. the row house next door also had smoke damage. nobody got hurt. >>> and just after midnight, firefighters were called to this house along hale place in silver spring. we're told the fire started in the kitchen. no one was hurt there either. the causes of both fires under investigation. >>> also new this morning, news4 has learned that a local soldier is one of two men killed in afghanistan on memorial day. 51-year-old chief warrant officer john pratt of springfield, virginia, was killed monday when his helicopter crashed near kabul. captain john brainard of maine was also killed in the crash. the defense department is still investigating the

. >>> good morning, i'm eun yang. >> i'm aaron gilchrist. welcome to "news4 today" on this tuesday, may 1. breaking news in the district. police on the scene of a serious stabbing. >> it happened around 2:15 near the intersection of 5th and florida avenue in northwest. tracee wilkins is live with the latest. what's going on? >> reporter: this is still under investigation, but i can confirm that this iss a statdfatal stab. police have confirmed that the victim is dead. this is bizarre as it also involved a car accident. we understand there was an altercation and the person inside the car is the person who was stabbed. at some point, lost control of the car and crashed into this tavern, 520 florida avenue. again, police are still investigating this incident. still trying to figure out exactly what happened here and the in order which all of this happened. at this point, we don't have any suspect information. again, a fatal stabbing here on florida avenue. and because of that, a large portion of florida is shut down for now as police continue t

. >> i'm eun yang. welcome to "news4 today" nature tuesday, may 22, 2012. there were a number of flash flood warnings issued overnight. tom kierein has been tracking the storms. what can people expect as they head out the door this morning? >> thankfully a lot of rain came down really hard over the last couple of hours has rapidly diminished. there are still a few moderate showers in the northern neck of virginia. they are drifting east across the tidal potomac way south of washington. but as you look at the radar, going back the last couple of hours, it was really coming down hard in prince william county for several hours between midnight and about 3:00 a.m. when that happened, they got about three to four inches of rain in just a couple of hours as a result. there was significant flooding. prince william parkway was closed for a while. route 29 was closed for a while. still several of the small roads with creeks and streams are closed due to the residual flooding from the heavy downpours. now right along 95 up to washington, this is where it's raining li
