i asked douglas brinkley about cronkite's title. >> it's hard to live up to being the most trusted man america. that is what he was doubled by 1972 from a fail poll and the cbs publicist ran with it. his insegity factor was extremely high. i write in the book about some moments. it was kind of the old boys club at a time when politicians and journalists interacted in a much different way than they do now. by the time cronkite became anchorman at cbs in 1962 people were getting their news from the evening news of walter cronkite. it almost became a ritual. you got home from work, 9:00 to 5:00, relax a little, watch cronkite and have dinner. his impact is immense. on things like civil rights, gay rights, the women's movement, the environment in the '60s and '70s, cronkite insisted all those stories were covered in a real time and an important way. you can't think of things like the birth of earth day and the images of bull connor in the south and the horrors of jim crow were brought into everybody's living room. cronkite's managing editor of cbs insisted on it. >> president kennedy died

reporting live in san francisco, i'm leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. >>> thanks, leslie. the traffic still a mess tonight. more than 7 hours after the fire started. here is what it looked like earlier from sky 7 hd. abc 7 news reporter heather ishimaru has been covering the story all day. >> reporter: firefighters started out attacking flames on the roof but quickly decided it was too dangerous to stay there. >> when they got up on the roof they saw the flexibility in the roof of what the color of the smoke it and whether or not there is flames breaching the roof and they just let the incident commander know. >> reporter: with crowds of spectators just across the street, chunks of the roof facade came crashing down on to the sidewalk. >> the facade has given way. the incident commander did a very good job in assessing the vulnerability of the structure and establish what we call a collapse zone to make sure that there was no one in front of the building and sure enough part tion of the facade did give way. >>> the wind blew toxic smoke across the bay. firefighters worked

we bring in myrna perez, and karen finney and brinkley. >> tell me!ve in conspiracy theories and i sid ate in the top of the show, but ever if i were this purging and the voter i.d. laws in all of the states that we saw. >> well, we have to remember that the purge process is being the context that it is in. first we had florida enact a restrictive law trying to impose the restrictions on the voter registration drives making it hard for people to get on the rolls. then they reduced the early voting people making it hard for people to actually vote. then they rolled back the clock with respect to really restoring the rights of people with criminal convictions and now they are making it harder for people to stay on thele rosb and fortunately the people are fighting back and succeeding. there was a preliminary injunction late last week that enjoined much of the most restrictive and onerous parts of the florida law to restrict voter drives and the justice on the same day said we will be watching the purge process and we expect you follow the federal law. s

leslie brinkley has the latest on the real security breech. >> absolutely, dan. if you linked in, your pass word may have been linked out, stolen. and it is a grave on-line security breech. >> a russian hacker claims to have stolen 6.5 million pass words from linked in, the business social networking site. on-line linked in confirms that some of the pass words that were compromised cory spondz to you -- corresponds to linked in accounts. >> they should have done a better job. they did not use best practices for storing the pass words. >> you can tell if your account was compromised if your current pass word does not work. linked in will send an e-mail with instructions for resetting it. but the damage is done, likely making banking and e-mail accounts vulnerable. >> i think the biggest problem today is that users use the same pass word on multiple websites. and they use pass words that are too short. >> you are literally saying you need a different pass word for every different website you log on to. >> in order to be secure the answer to that is yes. >> many of

doug brinkley and a presidential historian back with us today.his topic -- how does health care, obama care, how does it play into the election and specifically the debates between president obama and mitt romney? >> well, today president obama got a lot of momentum. and in politics the big moe is everything. june looked like a romney month. and now the president is ending this month with the wind in his sail. sort of buried the holder contempt story today. nobody in the media's really talking about it. so for barack obama this was big. in fact, he was calling it the affordable care act for so long he may actually want to embrace obama care and get out there and say, yes, like violet you just had on your show. that's who i'm helping right now. mitt romney is staked out that he's dissenting with the supreme court decision. and i think it's going to be one of the more brutal debates this year is re-arguing this health care debate. there's so many tentacles and loose parts that it will drag on with us all the way to next year. >> the debates will be
