tavis: always pleased to welcome jonathan demme. he has two projects at soon. the first is a look at the life of neil young. it opens in theaters june 29. here is a scene from "neil young journeys." ♪ >> that used to be the place where i caught fish when i was 5 years old. this is a town in north ontario. it does not look anything like it did before but i can smell it. ♪ i lived in this tent during the summer so i could be close to my chicken. i think that is why i was out there. my dad was very famous in canada. he was a great writer. this is the school they named after my dad. the golf course is being converted to a subdivision. this is the house after it was burned down. it was right here. isn't this beautiful? that is why you do not have to worry when you lose friends. they're still in your head, still in your heart. tavis: i have a photo in my office of willie nelson, john mellencamp, dave matthews, neil young, and me at the anniversary of farm aid. i was asked to be there hosting the anniversary tv special. i went to milwaukee, i do not know why i was ask

>tavis: we will have a conversation with jonathan demme. >> i love jonathan. he would have the same enthusiasm. tavis: i love that about him and that is why he is on this program friday night. are you a news junkie? would you say you are a news junkie? >> i kind of became a news junkie around 2000. the presidential election, and became immersed in the 24-7 of it all through primaries and things like that. i mean, i am. i have -- i can kind of see how they're feeling. they are waiting for the next breaking news ellerbe. it is different than we had walter cronkite way back when when it was 6:00 p.m. to 630 and that is it. now it is all the long. i am a bit of a junkie to a point. that i have to sleep. tavis: i do not know that this ever is the case because he is such a great writer. when you look at the script and there is something that sorkin wrote that ought to be changed, does that happen and how do you see that to aaron sorkin? >> very quietly and usually through someone else. a lot of players in between. it cannot be traced back. -- a lot of layers in betw

. >> the movie directed by oscar winner jonathan demme, is the third concert film these two have madehted to have them both right here in studio 57. welcome. >> thank you very much. >> a great collaboration, the two of you. what makes it work? >> we like each other is a start. we have fun, you know? we respect each other, and so it's a give-and-take thing. it's a good relationship. >> good. good. it began with "southern man" and the title sequence? >> well, "southern man," i attempted to see if it would be possible to get a neil young song that addressed, you know, homophobia and aids prejudice in the same way that "southern man" addressed racism. and neil wrote that very beautiful song, "philadelphia." >> oh, no, he nailed it at the end. part of the lyrics, "city of brotherly love, place i call home, don't turn your back on me, i don't want to be alone. love lasts forever." i remember, neil, at the end of the movie, and the song comes and your voice, that velvety, liquidy voice of yours. you're like a puddle when you're in the chair listening to that. you knew instantly, jonathan, th
