i want to see, is there any one from sfusd that wants to say a few words about this situation? actually, i do have one question. there used to be a fiscal -- physical ed teacher, and i wanted to make sure i knew what that relationship was. >> we heard it was eliminated in the past. the relationship this year is one that that i am still learning about. it is a strong staff that cares strongly about working with our students and i have learned for the benefits of the students. we do periodically meet at the senior level and even at the lower level. in the gymnasium, luckily, and the outside area. the only glitch it allows exhibited from p e during their incarceration. that is because it is being provided for the same needs said there is a section that will house that exemption. president chiu: from my perspective and to close this hearing, the other supervisor might have arguments for comments. your staff, i want to thank all the young people that came to talk about what is really happening. from my perspective, we all have to provide each other feedback about what is possible. w

he continued by saying that by a joining sfusd we would be on the front line of a war against the achievement gap. i was moved and excited to join the fight. since that day, i have watched our school lose a valuable resources. our staff has been cut and money for supplies is hard to come by. and now we are fighting to get adequate space is to ensure that our students are supported and we are able to tease them effectively. although i am only been here for two years, every student has the potential to become a successful adults. as a former marine, i know before you go to war you make sure you are prepared. if it is true we are waging a war, give us what we need to win. beginning of the conversation, we have to look at accountability and continue to engage whether it is sfusd or other entities here today. i want to thank the youth commission for all of their hard work and i am glad that you are leading this discussion and we hope that you continue to be part of it as we move forward. thank you. supervisor avalos: i would also like to thank the use commission for your work on this issue. we had a hearing yesterday with the u.s. commission and i talked about how i had never seen the youth commission so active before, hoechst not just certain individuals, but a large group, almost a majority of the youth commission has been active on a number of issues. i think it is really exceptional what we have had in the past. this has accomplished a lot. we think about the people that don't have the independence, and the voices are often not heard. they actually can have a way of having some say so about how the facility is run and how they are able to have active recreation. that is based on your experience, some members of the commission have been detained there, and

i am really excited that 40 years after we fought for ethnic studies, in 2009, sfusd joined in and we now have ethnic studies in public schools. students need to know how integrated the history is in building the city. there's a lot to celebrate and reflect upon. it causes us to think about the future of the community. we are such an integrated and central part of the city. it is an honor to be here today. i will bring up supervisor carmen chiu. [applause] >> thank you. i am pleased to be here with my colleagues at the board and others who are here as well. we are here to celebrate asian pacific american heritage month. this kicks off the celebrations we will be having an the recognitions we will be giving. i apologize first. i was at a budget meeting. sadly, that is coming before as quickly. i had to spend some time there. i guess it is true. asians are probably good at math. i am curious about how many of your patients are sfusd students or kids that attend public schools. is there anyway of knowing what that is? >> we do not track that currently. we do track when people come to our clinic, how they heard about us. we have been getting the word out through weekly bulletins in elementary schools. one of the things commissioner maufas was talking about was getting the word out more so people know about it. i do not know off the top of my head and it is not something we asked specifically. but i do know that some people have come in through the schools. commissioner mendoza: we work closely with our department of health on immunizations prior to the school year. with the mandatory whooping cough vaccine coming out, we hope we can work with you closely to ensure that those who do come through the public school system are getting that opportunity prior to school. i look forward to working more closely with you. thank you. supervisor campos: thank you. any other questions? i want to thank you for the tremendous work you are doing. i think it is really incredi

we understand that sfusd is facing a lot of cuts from the state. we just hope that, with the additional funds, if the city does decide to do this, that these funds would go towards student-supported services, that the money would go not necessarily to the administration, but that the students will see it. a lot of the cuts will affect the students. for things like credit recovery, that is one thing we thought of. adding a 7th period to the schedule would help students and a lot and they would see the benefit of these funds. that is where we are at. we thank you for your time. >> hello, supervisors and commissioners. i just graduated from high school and i am going to harvard in the fall. to reiterate what she said, last meeting, the use commission has a really overwhelming question about how this money will be spent and what kind of authority the city would have. from my own experience, i really support the school district to receive the money. give the money to the school district because they face such a huge deficit. we do not want any more furl

[applause] >> you do not get the last word. right now, i want to move to the agenda. this is for the presentation to the board, the superintendent's report. this is very romantic. we're going to -- the superintendent's thoughts for the evening, carlos garcia. >> i'm still the superintendent until july 1. first of all, richard, congratulations. it is awesome to have you there and i want to congratulate the sport for having the courage, your the first board -- you are the first board, where were not even born. when there is succession planning were you will have someone who is from within the we have had in terms superintendent's. -- had interim superintendents. to have succession planning especially when we're not headed in the right direction, whether to go somewhere else but what kills public education is we never stay the course. we keep zigzagging and when something starts to look -- work, double digit growth for african-american and pacificare -- pacific islander students, this is closing the gap. and to hire a young wellbo

we even imagine our students would get out of sfusd and happen to move on to the community college, thecollege and a lot -- csu, they're not doing remediation classes anymore. they said that. they can't afford it. our students lead us with nowhere to go to get the courses to move on through the four-year college with the fidelity. and also the jobs because even though trade work because if this point the trades have told us, we need your students to come really ready and have that rigorous course schedule because that helps them ascend in the trades and not stay at the laborer level and that's what we want sturepts to do. they have tons of attrition and waiting for students and they asked us and we have been able to participate fully with our trades and labor partners in providing students. lastly, i know it's on the table in discussion but on the furlough days, i want to keep that topic open but that as we had our teacher talk about, immense impact on teachers, especially for our heart to staff schools. a lot of newer teachers are there and i want to be sensitive they have neeell and s
