arturo santiago has more on the very emotional day. >> reporter: well, diane, the president was about an hour late arriving at san francisco international, because he was an hour late leaving colorado, where he had spent an emotional afternoon with some of the victims of the mass shooting in aurora, colorado. he met with them in private, and was told stories of an incredible survival. he told them that his visit was not so much as a president of the united states, but as a husband and father. but he did talk of the nation. >> this person has received a lot of attention over the last couple of days, that attention will fade away. and in the end, after he has felt the full force of our justice system, what will be remembered are the good people who were impacted by this tragedy. >> reporter: president obama spent three hours visiting with victims and their families at university of colorado hospital. they shared with him their stories of survival and loss. one story the president recalled was that of 21-year-old stephanie davies who remained in the line of fire to help save the life of

nbc bay area's arturo santiago is live in san jose with the story. arturo? >> reporter: well, this morning's event was actually called the rose, white and blue parade. a bit of history here, it started way back in 1896 as part of the rose celebration that was held every may. a few years ago, the parade was moved to the fourth of july. for all intents and purposes, this is san jose's fourth of july parade. it just happens to be sponsored and organized by the alameda business association. >> around here, we don't have a material fourth of july parade. that's why we took it on ourselves to build up this parade so that it could be eventually a citywide event. i think this year, our fifth year, that's true. >> reporter: the business association sends out a parade program well in advance to about 30,000 households. local businesses buy advertising space in the program. the revenue is then used for everything from the extra police to waste services to the portable bathrooms. some money does come from the city of san jose, but only in the form of small hp grants fro

arturo santiago is live in san jose with the late breaking developments. arturo? >> reporter: it's been a waiting game for most of the day, but we did just receive a few minutes ago with a spokesman with the casino that the owners of casino m8trix have received final approval from the chief of police. this whole process started about five years ago when the old garden casino was bought. in the spring of the last year they applied for a landlord license, call it casino m8trix and open it in a brand-new $50 million facility. the owners have been waiting since then for approval from the san jose police department and division of gaming control. one major change has been the gaming control's decision to not allow card tables on the top floor for a while. they are eventually, will be able to open their doors. >> we've been working with the city for four, five years now. and so whenever dealing with the city, whenever dealing with a regulatory agency, you have to have patience. we will continue to work with them and iron out any issues if there are any. the owners are i

i'm arturo santiago, nbc bay area news. >>> now to san francisco. a chaotic scene downtown today. a suspect is dead tonight after being shot by a police officer. it happened at washington and davis streets near the embarcade embarcadero. police say they were responding to reports of a stabbing at a chocolate factory at pier 17 when they encountered the suspect about a block away. police say the man lunged at a female officer with a box cutter. she then fired two shots, hitting him in the upper body. >> the officers are allowed to shoot in defense of themselves. if somebody lunges at you the officers are within policy to defend themselves. >> the suspect, a 30-year-old asian man, was a temporary worker at that chocolate factory. he allegedly attacked a fellow employee with a box cutter, slashing the arm and then took off. the officer is now on paid administrative leave pending an investigation. >>> tense moments also in a quiet san jose neighborhood today as the s.w.a.t. team tracked down four suspected burglars. several streets in the cambria neighborhood were blocked off as offic
