it is friday july 6th, 2012, i'm chuck todd. the "daily rundown" starts right now. the jobs report gives more pressure on the presidential election. this month 80,000 jobs added in june leaving the unemployment number stuck at 8.2 making the second quarter of 2012 the weakest in terms of jobs added in two years. after a brief dip in april the unemployment rate has not moved at all, but the bad news is hiring with 80,000 new jobs with adjustments to april and may and you can see 225,000 jobs were added in the last three months combined, and that is less than the total number of jobs added in february alone. on average 226,000 jobs were added each month in the first quarter. the second quarter average just about 75,000. down by more than 2/3. the jobs report essentially means a political status quo of sorts, but it is bad enough to give romney some breathing room from a bad week. yesterday the hand wringing about romney's campaign continued after a brutal editorial from the "wall street journal" followed up be i the weekly standard's bill crystal comparing romney to q

political director chuck todd joins me now from washington. the numbers might be a point that romney can hit. he does have a double-edged sword. >> this has been a rough week from him and the back and forth having to do with his view of how the supreme court ruled on health care. it has been a growing chorus of criticism that the campaign is the only focus on the economy. does he think that this is the only thing that can get him elect and get him over the finish line against the president. the romney campaign does believe this. they believe it is all about the economy. just like bill clinton in 1992, they can ride this wave of economic anxiety to the white house. you will see a more robust mitt romney today and comfortable in his talking point. whether this goes away and meat on the bone, this idea that he is not putting enough meat on the bone and the criticism on the right goes away because the numbers are unclear. you talk about a lot of poster who is think with the public this sluggish economic times is baked in. is there really a lot of

chuck todd still with us. chuck, he talked about the jobs report. he also mentioned the issue of health care. he was really trying to touch on the issues that might energize the base and the undecideds. he took eight or nine questions which he normally doesn't. >> let's start with health care. boy did he pivot as fast as he could. questions specifically about the president's charge. that was a striking charge for him in an interview that aired earlier from ohio where he said mitt romney changed his position on the mandate whether it's a tax or not due to pressure from the conservative wing of the republican party. he basically answered the question the same way he answered for years. what i thought was right for massachusetts was in massachusetts. i never said it should be done federally. he pivots back to the economy as if to say that didn't work for me and i am not going to relitigate. a few things caught my eye in the remarks. mitt romney has to sell gloom and pessimism. the president has to sell optimism. you are seeing the two striking visions

i'm chuck todd. here's what we know. the massacre took place at the century 16 movie complex in aurora, colorado, a suburb of denver. at this moment the local police chief says 12 people are dead. the nub fluctuated throughout the morning. at least 50 are wounded. here's how it happened. before 12:30 a.m. local time federal officials say a gunman armed with an assault rifle and two handguns came in through a theater exit. nbc confirmed that the suspect is 24-year-old james holmes. two witnesses that were inside the theater 9 described what happened next on nbc station kusa. >> he threw one gas -- like one teargas thing. >> landed in the row in front of us, hit the girl in front of us. then they exploded. >> he threw another one. >> yeah. >> i think that went to the right of us. >> did you see him starting to shoot people at that point? >> he actually waited. he looked so calm when he did it. it was, like, scary. he waited for the bombs both to explode before he even made any move. then after both of them exploded he bega
