so far, police telling us 14 dead, 14 dead and at least 50 have been transported to local hospitals, some of them in "extremely critical condition." our initial reports were that ten people have died. we've now learned that four others died on their way to the hospital or upon their arrival at the hospital for a total of 14 dead so far, 50 transported to local hospitals. police chief dan oates in a brief conference call a few moments ago said, yes, we do have a suspect in custody. there is no evidence at this time of a second gunman, but they're not ruling that out. they're taking every precaution, but from all their reports and eyewitness accounts, they're hearing there was, in fact, one gunman on the scene. that gunman reportedly telling police that there may have been explosives as well inside the theater and perhaps even explosives at his residence. police quick to point out they have not confirmed either of those claims made by the suspect just yet. again, this is at the century 16 movie theater in aurora town center. we talked about it just moments ago with our reporter, jace la

local hospitals reporting patients are on the scene. they have been told to prepare for as many as 20. we were listening in just now as they were talking to some local folk there's who witnessed this horrific scene inside. they said they were hearing noises, but "the dark knight" is one of those movies where there is a lot of shooting, so they weren't sure if it was the movie. there were reports of smoke, perhaps an explosion and one witness was just telling us that he did see some people hunched over apparently who had been shot. we are trying to get as many details on this story as possible for you. we have jackie montgomery, a spokesperson, university of colorado hospitals. she is joining us on the line. are you there, jackie? >> i'm hear. >> what can you tell us about the injuries? >> at this point the university of colorado hospital has received about 20 patients with various levels of injuries from minor to severe. >> i'm having little difficulty hearing you. what is the severity of their injuries? >> it ranges from minor to severe

of those 14 dead, ten of them were in the theater, four at local hospitals. we were worried about those transported to the hospital in critical condition, were they going to make it four of them have not. the total is 14 dead. >> 50 people injured. this must have been a chaotic scene. more details now, the police chief, dan oates, says he believes there was some sort of smoke device used at the beginning of the shooting. clearly this was something, you know, well-planned. whoever carried this out knew what he was doing when he went in there with some sort of smoke device, opening fire in the showing of "the dark knight rises" killing ten people immediately on the scene. another four people dying in area hospitals. >> there were reports he was wearing a bullet-proof vest also, protecting himself. yes, going in there on a mission to do this. a lot of people had reported earlier they thought there was some smoke inside. you know, the noise is what they kept talking about. that there was smoke there was an explosion, there was noise. all those things typically hap

any information call the local hospitals. among them swedish medical center, and aurora medical center, happening just at 12:30 a.m., mountain time. aurora is in the southeast area of denver, colorado, ten miles from downtown denver, a town of 325,000 people. 14 dead so far. and, possibly, as many as 50 injured. >> the suspect using three weapons, two handguns, one long gun, had one of the handguns hidden in the movie theater and appears at the front of the movie theater and just started throwing tee gas and firing shots. all investigators among them police and f.b.i. officials at this hour, searching the suspect's apartment, which is in aurora, colorado, because he indicated to officials he had some sort of explosive devices in his apartment, as well as his car. his car was found in the parking lot somewhere in the area of this movie theater. whether there are really explosives we do not know but that is something officials have to take seriously. >> one lone g

talk a little bit about what the local hospitals are doing.y accepting these doctors who perform the procedure or are they saying we don't want to get in the middle of this fight? >> reporter: well this doesn't sound like a very big deal if you're asking for these doctors to be first of all ob-gyns which the three doctors at this clinic are. but the law is also asking them to have admitting privileges at a local hospital. these doctors are from out of state and when they come in they're only here for a limited period of time to do their work and then go back to wherever they live or have another practice going. but the owner of the clinic here states that it is taking a lot of time to get these hospitals to respond to the requests for an application and to get this process going. the state law allows for several weeks for them to do this but they say that wasn't enough time and they're afraid if the law is allowed to stand there will be fines while they're in noncompliance and possibly even worse. they say it could lead to them actually closin
