here's lonnie quinn. lonnie? >> maurice, thanks very much. good morning everybody. let's get right to the big picture. again, i'll talk about what's taking place right now. we're seeing a little bit of monsoonal moisture fading away. but it's going to reignite once you get some sunshine in that area. then i see a front here. there's a cold front pushing through the mid-atlantic right now. we can zoom had on this area. it's currently set up around the chesapeakes. take a look at that shot. know in your minds, it's going to continue to push down to the south. for places like raleigh, north carolina, we'll be firing up pretty good storms today. the other side of this front is where things really settle down today. what's interesting to point out, a place like new york city, two days ago 100 degrees. today, about 79, maybe 80. quite a bit of sunshine will eventually develop. that's a quick look at the national picture. here's a closer look at the weather for your weekend. >> okay. everybody, i'll see you in half an hour. rebecca, back to you. >>> coming up next, we'll s

we head outside to lonnie quinn for the latest. he's braving it for us. it is going to get hot, very hot here. it's going to get hot where you live as well. this heat is something else. day after sweltering day from the gateway arch in st. louis to chicago's lakefront to times square in new york city, the triple digit temperatures just will not quit. 238 cities to be exact have set all-time highs in the last 30 days. according to weather historian chris burke, the heat wave that started last month, it is one for the ages. this last june will probably go into the record books as more record all-time hot temperatures being set since june 1936. >> burke says the air mass responsible for the heat wave started in mexico, it then worked its way into the rockies. it tracked east to the mid-atlantic and then it retreated and settled bag over the midwest. >> once this pattern set up, it can become stagnant. >> the prolonged heat has taken its toll on infrastructure. just outside washington, d.c. where temperatures topped 95 degrees for the ninth straight day, a me

another part of nature is lonnie quinn. he joins us now with a first check of the weather. >> forgesce of nature. keep going. this is getting good. i'll show you the satellite and radar picture for the entire country. it's not too active at this hour. most having a good morning. the spot i'm watching is here. let's zoom in tight. it's anywhere from central new york state north into northern new england. there's a low pressure system here. just rolling off the great lakes. this system will be intensifying as it moves to the northeast. here's what i'm calling for. anywhere from albany new york to, say, places like pittsfield massachusetts to brattleboro, vermont. you put sunshine heating of the day, a lift as the low pressure flies over the mountains, you'll squeeze out rain. 2 to 4 inches in this area with some spots picking up more. could see 4 inches to possibly 5 >>> for us it's a warm start to the day, 78. the dew points are high and they will remain high because of that. t we have the chance for strong, maybe severe sto

here's lonnie quinn with our first check of the weather. od morning, lonnie. >> good morning, nancy and anthony. good morning everybody. let's take a walk to my big map here. i want to start off talking about the mid-at states into the northeast. we have an area of disturbed weather. what's interesting about this. this is the exact same system that came through the exact same portion of the country exactly one week ago with dangerous storms around portions of southern new jersey and then it pushed down to texas and it erupted yesterday with all that terrible flooding. it has now tracked back to the northern portion of the united states. we will see gray skies in the northeast and the mid-atlantic today with a rain chance. the bigger picture is going to show us rain around the spine of the rocky mountains. on the backside of that, i'm telling you, for a portion of the country that people think is the gray pacific northwest, it is anything but gray. i'm telling you, this is a beautiful spot to be, spokane bend, redding. i'm talking temperature
