san diego tonight. christine, what's the situation there? >> reporter: good evening to you. we can tell you as you mentioned the suspect did indeed spend a great deal of his life right here in suburban san diego. this is his mother's home. a lot of cars are here. intense media presence as well. all of the world is watching over this situation. we talked with high school friends of james today. they tell us that and he was quiet and a normal kid, certainly not someone they would expect to be behind such a horrible crime. james holmes graduated from westview high school in san diego in 2006. he lived just a few blocks away from school where a long time neighbor today remembers him as quiet and very smart. >> i feel so bad for his parents. they are just really nice folk, i feel terrible for these victims and my feeling is what happened? >> reporter: another neighbor says the holmes family was nice and outgoing. >> it breaks my heart because they are lovely parents. >> reporter: holmes left san diego after high school. university confirms holmes grad dwatd a neuroscience agree in 2010. holmes mother still lives in the family home. she called police to the home after reporters first arri

neighborhood called rancho penasquitos north of san diego where neighbors say people move because of the quality of the schools. it's a very nice suburbaneighborhood. we spoke with some of those neighbors, including a man named tom mai who lives right next door to the holmes family. he said that james holmes, when he was in high school and living here, was a nice kid and didn't have any rowdy friends. >> very handsome guy, yeah. >> clean cut? >> yeah, clean cut. quiet. like responsible, helping their family out and study hard. >> we also spoke with another neighbor named julie adams. she showed us a high school yearbook that had pictures of holmes. and it was pictures alongside her son. they were both on the same soccer team together. same junior varsity soccer team back in 2004. of course, she was very surprised. her son very surprised to hear the news of this shooting. here's what she had to say. >> i'm thankful that he wasn't living here at the time because there were lots of kids that i knew that were at the local movie theater right here. so it could happen anywhere. >> you can imagine law enforcement officers, local police officer
