tim williams is in the first warning weather center tracking live doppler radar. first we go to derek valcourt with more on the damage those fierce storms caused around the state. good afternoon. >> reporter: hi. the storms that rolled through last night nowhere near as powerful as the ones we saw on june 29th but the storms that rolled through last night did knock down some trees, some power lines and ef -- even sparked a couple of house fires. >> what started out as a scorcher of a weather day with record breaking heat. >> it feels like you're in a furnace. >> it's like walking into a sauna. >> soon took a wild and wicked turn. from chopper 13 you can see the line of storms stretch across the region bringing intense rain and at times fierce lightening. it was a lightening bolt that struck the home of edward thomas and his wife. >> i was looking out the back door and saw sparks like a flare going off back. i yelled to my wife we've been hit by lightening. >> as the two made their way out and called 911 fire began to damage their home. firefighters got the blaze u

tim williams is tracking more rain and storms on live doppler radar. tim? >> certainly, the type of rain we need is a steady soaking rain. we got more than that last night with a little bit of the cost of flooding and damage. we do have showers in the area in the baltimore metro area, we are getting a bit of a break right now. we have rain moving from the west and another evening full of storms firing up. take a look right now. the storm prediction center issued a slight risk advisory for our area south of the metro area and the entire eastern shore. most of the top tier of the state is not involved in this but because of the rain and drenching downpours that they could likely produce, we do have a flash flood watch in effect for much of the state and this is all through this evening as well as the slight risk category for the storm. we have this rain move for the rest of the day but have had rain. we send it to marty bass. marty? >> that's what counts. we have a graphic for you. for the most part with 1.06 inches of rain at b.w.i., still a little down for

tim williams, we'll be living big in about 48 hours. take it away. >> get ting a slight break because of the dew point being down. with the temperatures at 93, the heat index is 92. we've been deal being the dew points in the 70s. that's liable to kick in again through the day. already at 93 at the noon hour. no releft from the wind -- no relief from the wind. 87 on the shore, 89 in elkin, 93 at bwi, 92 at reagan national, bel air 88, rock 89. calm winds in central maryland but a bit of a freeze, variable directions. you see a north wind art elkin, a northeast wind in haggers town and then the south wind around come umberland -- cumberland. what you're going to be dealing with no matter what the direction of the wind today, these warm temperatures are still back up in the 90s. there's a front we're watching that's going to start drifting down across are the area on sunday. high pressure still pumping that warm air in. that high is going to come -- the front is going to come through here, it may trigger a thunderstorm or two on sunday. a

we go to meteorologist tim williams. good morning. >> definitely watch the storms roll through here. it's been almost 48 hours. what we are doing now is setting the stage for today. 76 degrees right now. wow that is not excessive heat right now, temperatures reflect a bit of a heat index. do points pretty high. you feel it as soon as you go out. but there are small improvements as we move into this day. first off, we did not have any severe storms roll through yet today. spotty showers not expect the temperatures. as a result, the national weather service has listed the heat warning in place for the state. that just simply means instead of starting with forecast highs around 100 and the heat index up around 110, we are looking at a forecast high today of around 95. the heat index will still be around 100. i still have that number. again, it's a small improvement. folks will not be quite as uncomfortable. temperatures are trending down which means there'll be a a little relief. radar shows that there are still other storm

tim williams is joining us with the weather forecast. >> it will be another hot day. we'll take you to doppler radar to give you an idea. we are poised to have thunderstorms rolling through the region. what we have north around harrisburg and redding is a system that is pushing through the region. we had one portion push through last night. another one pushing through today. the one that pushes through today will change the dynamoearning dynamic -- dynamic of the temperatures. we are dealing with temperatures around 85 at bwi marshall. dew point 70. another humid start to the day. it feel like 90 degrees after you factor in the dew point and heat. as a result national weather service issued a heat advisory for today. not excessive heat warning but a heat advisory from 11:00 until 8:00. because of the changes we'll be dealing with a slight risk of thunderstorms for the entire state through this day. forecast for this day starts off with temperatures in that 80-degree range. we are going up to a daytime high of 98 degrees with a strong thunderstorm this afternoon. anoth

tim williams in the out back and bernadette woods in the weather center. good afternoon, bernadette. >> good afternoon. this is one of the days you want to be smart about the heat. we have a heat advisory in effect until 9:00. already today temperatures at 95, those dew points are way up since yesterday. when you factor that together, it already feels like 103 in baltimore, 105 in elkin, 106 ocean city. this is a very hot, very uncomfortable day. take a look at this graphic. this is a stretch of days but definitely the peak. the record today is 102, we're going to be close to that. we're going for a high of 101. that's not the only thing we're going to be dealing with today. the chance for some severe weather. for more on that we send it out to tim. >> reporter: the dew points are high, the moisture is high. we have a lot of fuel in the atmosphere for any thunderstorms that may fire up through the afternoon. let's take a look. radar show s that we have a front that's to our north that's going to be pushing into this region. that's the trigger for the storm

let's go to meteorologist testimony women and bernadette woods -- tim williams and bernadette woods. >> good afternoon. we'll take you right to the doppler. here is a linep storms, many of them triggering severe warnings as they are moving across into central maryland, moving across a diagonal from the northwest to the southeast. we'll give you an idea of what is moving in our direction. the one moving more toward the baltimore metro area is this one. by about 4:00, it will head to chestnut, liberty, unionville and 245 will be moving in in the -- and that will be moving in in the next hour or so. this storm will be triggering storms as it's moving across the region. as one county is lifted, another will be added to the severe warning. take a look at our watches and warnings. the entire area for the most part except for the lower eastern shore is under a severe thunderstorm watch for theern tire area. currently we have severe warnings for carroll and frederick counties. that's because the storms are moving on through the region. the one for washington county has been lifted and the on

let's go to tim williams tracking temperatures. >> good afternoon. the dew points are still very high, even though the temperatures have dropped just a little bit, down to about 92 at bwi. when you say down to 92, you know where we started. take a look at the radar, we'll give you an idea of what's happening outside. the winds are coming in from the northwest and that's bringing in some cooler air clashing with the hot air that's in place. we have some widely scattered pop up showers and some light thunderstorms around the area right now. we do have a few. we have just a few down towards ocean city that are popping up as well down near berlin seeing showers and thunderstorms. those showers are going to help drop our temperatures. we have a bigger batch moving in from the west, but several hours away from moving in. we will continue to monitor their progress and talk about how it's going to impact us coming up. >>> a step in the right direction for some businesses effected by the massive downtown water main break. mike hellgren is live in the news roo

. >>> meteorologist tim williams is in the weather center with the updated first warning forecast. tim? >> i don't think he should be in the water right now. but he is there. and water is not a bad place to be. it's still warm enough to be there. we have seen temperatures in the mid-80s. still at 85 degrees. and right now, rain is to our south. any rain we've had close by. clouds have been cast just ahead of it, though. and that rain is going to start moving into the region. you see that little "h" right there at the a-l-t of baltimore. that's the high pressure that is keeping the rain at bay. as it does, our temperatures now at just around 85 degrees, are going to start going up. because we're going to start to see more warmth coming from the west and southwest. we'll also see a better chance of showers and maybe thunderstorms over the next few days, primarily in the afternoon and overnight hours on friday, saturday and sunday. maybe even lingering into monday, before we start to see some clearing. but we can use the rain. we are down for the year and the month. so far for the mont

meteorologist tim williams, how are you doing, tim? has dramatic new images of that storm that knocked out power to hundreds of thousands one week ago. but we'll go to bob with an update on the heat. >> right now, we're looking at 97 degrees. it got up to about 99 about two hours ago. but the good news is, at least for today, we had rather low dew point. 61 is really not that bad for the middle of summer. 86, the temperature in oakland. 82 in ocean city. not too bad there. but with 97 and a dew point of 61. 97 feels like about 97, 98. really hasn't gone up much. ocean city, a little more humid. and feels like 89 there. -- 98 there. because of extreme heat and more humid conditions, we have an excessive heat warning that will be in effect for tomorrow evening, into the early evening hours. and by tomorrow night, look out, we could see some strong thunderstorms breaking out across the region. and then we start looking at some cooler temperatures. tim has a look at that direct show that came in from the midwest that batted the entire regi

meteorologist tim williams and bob turk are updating the forecast. and some thunderstorms in the region. bob? >> and heavy rain across central baltimore county. take a look at is this activity that has come in. some areas pick up heavy rain right now. particularly over portions of baltimore county and carroll county. there you see it. there's another small cell on the eastern shore that seems to be dying out. but some folks here. up at 83. parkton, hereford, jackson, phoenix. may see a quick inch of rain. and temperatures quickly dropping back into the 70s. take a look at our forecast. tim has a look at that friday outlook. not a whole lot better than today. tim? >> well, scattered shower and scattered thunderstorm potential stays with us at least in small part for tomorrow. but temperatures start off in the 70s. tomorrow will be another day with a high dew point. and the temperature range around 100 degrees. we'll go up to about 98 to 101 for our forecast high. and then drop down to the 70s in the overnight hours. for the next five days, including a

meteorologist tim williams is here with the updated numbers from first warning weather. tim? >> good afternoon, denise. good afternoon, everyone. this is about as normal as you can get. temperatures right on target for what we typically expect this time of year. we're at 88 degrees right now. that is our normal high. only place we have activity, any type of shower or rain activity now is out to the west. none of those, showers or storms, are over the state. some in the panhandle of west virginia, south of cumberland. others up north of the state line. and we're looking at a pretty dry day overall in maryland. right now, temperature is at 88 degrees at bwi marshall. cumberland and oakland, both being cooled down a little bit because of the rain on either side. and with the dew point in the 50s, that 88 degrees feels at least one degree cooler, at least in central maryland. feels more like 87 in d.c., bwi marshall, and elkton. right up and down the 95 corridor. things pretty comfortable overall. we'll continue to keep you posted on the afternoon's weather. we'll have your compl

tim williams is updating rainfall totals. first monique griego has more on the fires. >> reporter: right now the eastern shore seems to be under the biggest threat from these dry conditions. >> filthy air over the ocean shore after a massive brush fire ignited on kent island. flames threatened homes and destroyed nearly 50 acres. >> we've been setting lots of records month after month when the rest of the state was doing okay they were still dry. >> wendy from the u.s. geological survey says the eastern shore are the areas hardest hit by drought conditions. the lack of rainfall only made worse by extremely high temperatures. >> the ground and plants are dry so that's an increased risk of fire. >> that's why nearly a month after the fire started it's contained but still burning. >> you can't extinguish all the fire. because of the drought conditions we have across the state it's difficult and these fires get deep seated. >> the threat of brush fires aren't the only problem. >> right now agoriculture is being most effected by t

first tim williams is updating the souring temperatures. good afternoon, tim. >>> good afternoon. hope you're finding a way to stay cool. you know, we're looking at temperatures well above our averages already. we're going up from here. i will preface this by saying that our noon temperatures have not come in yet. these are the 11:00 temperatures. they will update here in the next few minutes, which means they're going to go up. 94 or last reported temperatures at bwi, 91 ocean city, 75 is the coolest spot in oakland, 97 in the nations capitol. you couple that with a dew point very high -- again, we start talking about the dew points being over 65 with these types of temperatures and it feels more like 101 on your scan around central maryland. it feels like 101 at the beach on the shore. because of these temperatures, as don mentioned, we have a heat advisory in effect for all those orange shaded counties, including baltimore city that just went into effect at noon, stays with us until 8 p.m. on the shore where you see the red colors that's an excessive heat warning that goes into

after last night's much needed soaking, tim williams is in the weather center with the numbers. good afternoon, tim. >> good afternoon. we deft definitely woke up to the thunder and lightening. it was a definite tran decision going on. the cooler -- transition going on. the cooler air is moving in. some of the rain moved through here with a bit of fanfare. the thunder and lightening came through. not a ton of rain with this. it moved across the state and with that some of those storms came through with a bit of a punch, but nothing severe. no severe warnings or watches were kicked into place. right now the temperatures is at 76. we have 84 up towards elkin, 79 down towards dc. believe it or not, there's not much of a heat wave to talk about. 77 is the actual -- is what it feels like, although the actual temperature is around 76. we did come off of 12 straight days of 90 degree temperatures or better, four of those days were at 100 degrees or more and of those four days two of those were records and that was this past weekend, sunday and saturday. saturday we hit 104. we will cont

meteorologist tim williams is updating our conditions in the warning weather center. tim? >> good evening, mary. good evening, everyone. temperatures are now just starting to change, coming in for the 5:00 hour. first warning doppler radar shows that we have had just a little rain out to the west of us. most of it, north and south of the maryland state lines. up near chambersburg, over toward the panhandle of west virginia. and there's only one little pop- up shower, just out near hagerstown. near williamsport and mawginsville. and that is the only rain we have in the area now. those spots geth a pretty good downp.o.w. temperatures in the upper 80s. 88 is our normal high. 87 now, the official temperature at bwi marshall for this hour. 88 in d.c. with the dew point down around 58. 87 feels more like 86. subtract 1 degree from the heat index. high pressure is going to be responsible for our forecast. right now, it's bringing in very dry air. but as that high starts to move off to the east, it's going to start pumping in warmer and more humid air by the end of this week and h

meteorologist tim williams is in the weather center, tracking a little activity on first warning doppler radar. >> we have had just one pop-up shower out there. most of the state has seen nothing but sunshine and just a mixture of sun and cloud the for the day. right now, out towards hagerstown is the only place we've seen any rain pop up at all this afternoon. and really, for the most part, for the next few hours or so. and really for the next day, we're not going to see much more than this. this is out near mawginsville. that is just one pop-up shower. right now, temperatures are coming down from a daytime high of 96 degrees. 78 in ocean city, where the wind is coming off the ocean. and 79 out toward oakland. where the rain out there on down in the panhandle of west virginia actually cools things off just a little bit. the actual heat index is about a degree cooler than the actual temperatures. 86 feels more like 85. and with that high pressure moving off to the east, we're going to feel more warm, humid air being pumped into the weekend right on through the weekend. we will get up to

meteorologist tim williams is out in the elements at the inner harbor. egin with bob turk in the first warning weather center, with more. bob? >> it's nice and cool, i might add. all right. poor tim. let's take a look at temperatures right now. as you mentioned, 98 degrees. 98 in washington, 86 in oakland. 84 over in ocean city. and with the dew point up a little bit to 63, earlier this afternoon, it was in the upper 50s, which was much, much dryer. but the 98 now, with that dew point of 63. makes it feel like 100 degrees. that's a mistake in easton, by the way. 102 in cumberland. and 91 in ocean city. now, tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow night, i think they'll be dying in easton. saturday afternoon and evening, we have an excessive heat warning. not a watch. it's a warning for most of the region. down to the south, as you can see. they have heat advisories and excessive heat watches in effect. because tomorrow, temperatures should reach about 100 to 103. but the heat index is probably as high as 110, 112, by tomorrow afternoon. the worst day of this current

we begin with meteorologist tim williams and bob turk, tracking this dangerous heat. bob? >> take a look at the numbers coming in. we'll probably have an update shortly. but last hour, we were at 99. easton, washington, baltimore area. but the dew point is way up there. very, very moist. atmosphere at 70. so the 99 with the dew point of 70, feels like 107, last hour. 107, easton. cool spots, relatively cool, oakland, only 83. because of these extreme temperatures and conditions, for the city until 8:00 tonight, we have an excessive heat warning. eastern shore counties. there you see them to the east of us. and southern jersey as well. under an excessive heat watch for tonight. and again, pretty much all day tomorrow and likely particularly saturday as we may get into a number of other locations. tim helgren with a look at how hot it has been. >> definitely, we are looking at this stretch condition. shows in the numbers. today, we have hit that high number. tomorrow, we expect much of the same forecast to hold true. could be a little warmer. looking at a forecast high of 10

meteorologist tim williams and bob turk have the latest updates. bob? >> one thing you saw on that picture, there's really no haze today. the humidity has been much lower than it has been the last couple of days. tomorrow, though, it's going to come right back. that's why we have been expecting a really horrible day. up to 99. the dew point is still relatively low. but came up a little bit. 62 degrees. 98 in washington. right now in baltimore, with 99 degrees. and that dew point of 62. it feels like 101 in washington. feels like 98 in hot spot. cumberland now feeling like 102. now, tomorrow, i expect the heat index to be around 109, maybe to 110 or 111. and that's why for tomorrow afternoon, into the early evening hours, we have an excessive heat warning for much of the region. and the other areas you see a heat advisory. also, air quality tomorrow, expected to be in the poor range. tomorrow, all in all, it's going to be very, very horrible, disgusting, ugly, terribly heat-ridden day. if you can stay indoors, stay in a cool place. go to a library, go to

. >> drought watch coverage continues with tim williams who is updating rainfall totals and tracking live doppler radar. tim? >> not much is reported in any one location. we haven't had torrential downpour. the numbers haven't changed very much. we've had this year over 14 inches of rain. the normal would be just over 22 1/2, so the deficit is around 8 1/2 inches of rain or so. we had it move through b.w.i. marshall. that's been just about 200th of an inch. as far as the doppler radar, we've seen some of the rain totals picking up of those. kent county has a severe thunderstorm warning in effect until 6:45. we have until 7:00 because of the storms, they've been rolling through but pretty quickly and not really bringing much rain with them as they move on by. they're dropping temperatures to help us deal with the heat as we move into the next few days. we'll keep you posted. back to you, denise. >>> thank you, tim. we have an update on the story we told you earlier. the bay bridge that was shut down, now the wind restrictions has been lifted and the eastbound span is open and westbound

continuing with tim williams with a look at rainfall totals. tim? >> mary, we've seen the rain totals impress ive around the state. the official reporting station at b.w.i. marshall only gets a little bit when everybody else is getting a lot. they had one inch out of the last storms that rolled through here last night. look at the totals. 3.16 inches in 24 hours. almost a 4 1/4 inches. 3.35 around long green and 3 1/4 at science center. they sit and dump a lot of rain at a bit of time. if you wonder why the thunderstorms seem to be stronger than typical, think of the weather we've had. weather is all about balance. we've had extremely high temperatures, extremely high dew points with a lot of moisture that's the fuel for the thunderstorms. they take the force equally as strong. so when the cool air moves in and we're on the dividing line between the two, we get the clash and the storm with wind, rain and hail. we'll have more but bob will have the complete updated first warning weather forecast. it should be calm in a few moments back inside. >> tha

tim williams tracking the storms right now. >> definitely, denise, our drought watch continues. right new as men neek mentioned, the lower eastern shore does not seem to be getting a ton but we've seen a thunderstorm watch. that's because of the storms rolling through there. that is until 7:15 this evening. the storms are rolling through. that's what we're watching popping up. right now, we do not have as much severe activity out there. but that thunderstorm is something we're gonna have to keep an eye out there. so we will continue to keep you posted on that. as far as our totals. we have been talking about this, be a normally dry -- abnormally dry. we're from cecil dry, moderate drought down to the eastern shore. as you can see down to ocean city that area, again, is under drought conditions because of the concentrated areas we see down there but no widespread rain in that area for some time. as far as our rain totals for the year, normally we're up around 23-inches. year to date we've been up around 14 inches which gives us a deficits of 9 inches of rain. the rain moving thro

it's tim williams in for marty bass at warning weather. >> we will set the stage talking about the lift offing the heat advisory -- lifting of the heat advisories. this is a view of the storms that rolled through here friday night into saturday morning. the line ma moved through started late in the evening, about 10 o'clock or so. that line as we repeat this for you just brought a wall of storms and wind, damaging wind storm that rolled across the state and triggered all of these problems. as we started to improve, we do not have the watches and warnings in place. we dealt with a thunderstorm as don mentioned. we're looking at temperatures going back up into the 90s. 93, partly sunny with a thunderstorm in spots. expect another hot humid day. those storms could fire up in the afternoon. we're not expecting anything quite as severe as what we we dealt with last week. your complete updated forecast in just a few moments. >>> you're going to find a lot of debris. here is sharon gibala with traffic control. >> a whole long list of problems. the accident is going on right now. it's on 95 at

. >> first warning weather coverage with meteorologist tim williams, updating rainfall totals and explains why our storms seem to be so severe this summer. >> reporter: these rainfall totals, as we know, have been really impressive. it's hard to imagine that while we have still had all this rain around the area, while we're still in a deficit for the year so far. that's because the rain is recorded at the official station at bwi marshall. as you can see in the middle of the screen, smack in the middle, bwi marshall only had an inch of rain yesterday, even with all the storms rolling through. look at the localized totals. almost 4.25 inches near ocean city, from a trained weather spotter. 3.25 near the science center. 2.75 near westminster. more than 3 inches of rain near frederic and up around bel air. we had a lot of rain, but if it doesn't fall at the official station, does not count toward our total, which is still a little more than 7 inches down for the year. and if you wonder why these storms seem to be so drastic and so severe this year, just think of the weather we've had. we've ha
