aurora town center. again, if you're just waking up with us, a shooting inside a movie theater at a midnight showing of "the dark knight rises" in aurora, colorado, about ten miles east of denver. so far, police telling us 14 dead, 14 dead and at least 50 have been transported to local hospitals, some of them in "extremely critical condition." our initial reports were that ten people have died. we've now learned that four others died on their way to the hospital or upon their arrival at the hospital for a total of 14 dead so far, 50 transported to local hospitals. police chief dan oates in a brief conference call a few moments ago said, yes, we do have a suspect in custody. there is no evidence at this time of a second gunman, but they're not ruling that out. they're taking every precaution, but from all their reports and eyewitness accounts, they're hearing there was, in fact, one gunman on the scene. that gunman reportedly telling police that there may have been explosives as well inside the theater and perhaps even explosives at his residence. police quick to point out they have not confirmed either o

he is on the phone with us from aurora. good morning to you. we're glad you are okay. ll us what you saw and heard inside the theater? >> good morning. when i arrived at the theater it was supposed to be just a regular night out with my friends. prior to the movie starting i came up and sat in a row to the front right of me and then made a phone call outside of the emergency exit door which i thought was uncommon for people to normally do. i did not see him for a while. i came back into the theater. the movie started and a guy walked in wearing all black like all armor, wearing a gas mask, and throws a gas canister into the audience. i thought it was a stunt as a part of the movie. the gas can went off and i went to the ground and i still wasn't catching on. gunshots were going off. people are screaming. i thought it was for a thrill. then people are really, really screaming and i started getting really scared. i went to the ground and i tried to crawl my way out with my best friend who was with me. >> corbin, it's matt lauer. let me see if i understand this. are you un

tells how he helped with the chaotic scene and how he used prayer to help survivors. >> he joins us from auroralorado outside the theater. great to see you this morning, pastor. thank you for being with us. >> you're welcome. thank you for having me. >> we do want to hear how you helped many of those involved in the shooting, but first tell us what it was like. describe the scene as you were in an adjacent theater and began to realize what was happening. >> well, for us, we didn't, you know, obviously see the shooter. how it started for us is we, you know, heard a lot of pops, you know consecutively. we felt some debris. some of us felt some debris hitting us. we now know some of the stuff was coming through the walls. it was a little difficult because we didn't see anything happening next door so we didn't know what it was. i thought it was fireworks. then when the fire alarm went off and we started exiting the building, it occurred to me we shouldn't go out the door immediately. if that was a gun, the guy could ambush us. some of us held back. some people found out it was a gunman. we went ou

aurora and the whole community mourns tonight. good evening. ama dates is on assignment. she will join us live from aurora, colorado in a few minutes. first, here is the latest. tonight police say the suspect, 24-year-old james holmes has lawyered up, and he is not talking with investigators. over the past four months more than 50 commercial packages were delivered to his home and a school address including rounds of ammunition he bought on-line. we could get a look at holmes tomorrow when he is scheduled to appear in court. the town in aurora paid tribute to the 12 people gunned down in the theater, and abc7 news an ama dates was there and she joins us live in aurora, colorado. >> the turnout for the vigil was incredible. so many people showed up to pay their respects to those killed in the movie theater shooting. as one man said to me, there was a sense of family. a pledge from the community of aurora to the 12 people shot and killed in friday's movie theater shooting. this vigil at the aurora municipal center brought together family, friends and the ever watchful eye of police. but thi

joining us once again in studio with the latest on the investigation in aurora is senior cbs news correspondentn miller. john, thanks for joining us again here. now, at this point they are looking at the apartment complex where james holmes lives. he had put a bomb, some sort of explosive device in that unit. as you have been reporting, he was hoping to potentially lure the police there and distract them from seeing what he was doing at the massacre at the movie theater. now, they have to figure out what to do about that and they may have to actually bomb or explode the entire building in order to get rid of it. >> right. and this is -- i mean, according to dan oates, the chief there, he said this is a device like i've never seen before. there are trip wires and other things. so let's go with plan a. plan a is you have a device in an apartment. you don't want to put a bomb technician over that and put that individual at risk even in a bomb suit. procedure is you send a robot in and you remotely disarm it. you render it safe. render safe process. rsp. this is right out of the book. the problem i

us. this is nicole williams in aurora. >> in the town of aurora, what can you tell us, nicole? >> sure.sh medical center, we're a level-one trauma center. we're actually not the primary hospital that would be receiving patients. but because of our level-one designation and proximity to the shooting, we are receiving several patients at this time. we have currently received three patients to our emergency department. they are all listed with gunshot wounds, and they are all listed in -- condition. we have put our external disaster plan into effect as of about 1:15 a.m. we are prepared for up to 20 more patients to be inbound at this time. >> okay. again, that was nicole williams, she works at the swedish medical center there in aurora. again, she said it's not the primary hospital that folks go. at least 20 injured so far. she says there that three patients they admitted, all of whom suffered gunshot wounds. they're in emergency care right now. so that is the latest at least from one of the hospitals that will be dealing with this. not the primary, but some sense of the flood into the me

i believe on the phone we have with us frank fanea, who is with the aurora police department. thank you for being with us now. we listened to police chief dan oates news conference. any more details you can give us about the suspect? we understand you have a suspect in custody. where was he taken? >> some of the first officers who arrived on scene located the suspect near a car at the rear of the theater. he was taken into custody at the back entrance of the theater. >> any -- what was he wearing? we heard body armor, you know, ten people shot on the scene? any reports of the gun he might have used? how about other explosive devices? we understand some sort of smoke device was used. >> there appear there's was some sort of smoke or gas. we are hearing reports of an explosion. we don't know if that was part of the smoke and gas or a separate device. i have heard he was wearing a vest as well as we did recover at least one rifle, a handgun and another gun of some sort inside the theater that was left. >> a knife, a handgun and another gun, and you said you heard reports of a vest

i will try to clean up my language a little bit. >> tell us about aurora. i know a little bit about it. i have described it. it would be out of central casting of an american suburb. is that how you would describe aurora? >> yeah. it's a suburban community with some very high tech pieces. the medical campus where the c.u. medical school is, children's hospital. we are building a new v.a. medical center for the rocky mountain west there. we have buckley air base, a very high tech air base in the city. so it's a suburban community but with a big aerospace and medical feature to it. >> congressman, have you learned anything more about the suspect, what his motives were? has law enforcement shared that with you? [ dial tone ] >> sounds like we just lost him. we'll try to get him back. if not, thank you for coming on. one of those days when you have constant news and constant phoners and these things happen. we are expecting a press conference at any time from the me medical sent of aurora. that's one of the areas where victims are being treated. we'll continue

we have a reporter in aurora bringing us their story. >> the community of aurora is banding together. this message ever messages of hope, love and sorrow is the latest show of hope for the 12 people who died and those injured in the movie theater shooting as suspected shooter james holmes sits in jail. some of the people who lived throughout horror returned to the scene. >> i haven't been able to sleep. all of it has been going through my head. >> lisa tells me she was fortunate enough to get out of the theater not long after the theater began. >> he had a mask on and a bulletproof vest and a gun belt on him and one on his waste and took the one in his hand and started going off. >> her step dad used to live in cupertino so she had family in the area. they know century 16 is where she usually goes for big movie premieres. >> everybody was call off the hook because they know we live in the area. >> she came back for her car but didn't want to be there. two others did not return to the theater. >> it was just total chaos. it was total panic and total a chaos and it's kind of a blush. >>

us. i want to start by saying how proud i am of the men and women of the aurora police department and fire department and mike garcia from the fire department, the chief of the fire department is also here with us. okay. we got to straighten out some numbers. there are a total of 70 injured in this event. as of this time, 12 dead. still the number is 10 in the theater and the last of the bodies were removed from the theater a little after 5:00 this afternoon. i want to correct one thing. i think earlier today i said the others were all hit by gunfire. i now know a handful of the people who were brought to area hospitals were not hit by gunfire but suffered other injured as a result of the chaos and trauma in the theater. and i can't tell you how many that is but it's a small number. nearly everyone was shot. little information about our subject and the weapons he obtained. in the last 60 days, he sured four guns at local metro guns t shops and through the internet he purchased over 6,000 rounds of ammunition. more than 3,000 rounds of 223 ammunition for the assault rifle. 3,000 rounds of .

adam housley is live on the scene for us in aurora, colorado. >> we might find more out about that admission he has done or what really drove him to do this, what's inside this apartment complex behind me. authorities said even if they find or even if he has told them before he got a lawyer, they won't tell us. they'll wait and do that in a court of law. you know they're getting at evidence inside. let me give you a look at what's happening inside. the ladder truck put its ladder down. that's significant because it means they no longer have to hoist anybody in. they can now walk in. they've been inside the apartment from james holmes now for three or four hours. they have an assessment team inside. what they're doing now is all the trip wires have been taken down. all the significant threats have been taken away. but there are still very delicate areas in the apartment. they're going through very tediously, very meticulous work and they're insuring that each device they get to has been basically disarmed to the point where it won't set off -- there is no trip wires. that's what the crew is d
