bob, they haven't had any measurable rainfall here since the first week in may. >> schieffer: another jim, thanks. the hot, dry weather is perfect for the mosquitoes that spread the west nile virus. cases have been reported in 43 states this year. in texas alone, there have been 465 cases and 17 deaths. dallas is fighting back. tonight it begins aerial spraying to kill off mosquitoes for the first time in more than 45 years. in south africa, at least a dozen people were killed today when riot police fired on striking miners. it happened near a platinum mine in the northern part of the country, where the union miners are demanding better pay. witnesses say some of the strikers carry, sticks and machetes approached the heavily armed police. it's not clear what provoked the violence, but the strikers charged and the police opened fire with automatic weapons. jim, thank you. we learned today that three us airways planes got too close for comfort in the air over washington, d.c. and bob orr looked into that for us. >> reporter: the incident occurred tuesday afternoon as air traffic controllers were in the process of switching runways at regan national airport to steer planes around bad weather. aircraft using the same runway take off and land in the same direction to avoid potential midair conflicts. but a missed communication within a region f.a.a. control facility and the reagan tower caused two us airways commuter planes to take off towards the path of a third us airways jet, which was coming in for a landing. when a controller saw the developing conflict, she ordered the inbound plane with the call sign brickyard 3329, to break off its approach. >> a review of air traffic and radar tapes shows the first outbound plane came within .8 of a mile horizontally and 800 feet above the inbound jet. the second departing plane was a mile farther away. even after those depargt planes cleared the area, the inbound pilot was forced to circle a second time as controllers tried
