now from austin to talk about what the future holds for these two politicians and for texas is wayne slaterl writer for the dallas news. he knows it all. thank you for joining me in "the war room." >> thank you governor. >> jennifer: we have two rising stars emerging on two different ends of the political spectrum. is texas getting more conservative or getting more liberal? >> it's pretty conservative right now. so ted cruz, the tea party darling, does reflect what is in the minds of many republicans and conservatives in texas common sense. some of the crazy stuff that you were talking about is something that many voters in texas especially conservative republican voters think is not so crazy after all. at the same time, texas has a rich history as you know. this is a state that produced ann richards and barbara jordan. although texas is a red state right now and democrat has not won state office since 1994, it's a state where the demographic shift especially the growth of the hispanic voters promise that democrats will be back, probably by the year 2018, 2020 with a new group of hispanic o

wayne slater the senior political writer at the dallas morning news. glad to have you back on.ou make of this whole back and forth yesterday between these duelling campaigns and is there a reason that this grumpiness kind of coalesce like it did? >> this is a negative campaign, no question about it. both sides accuse the other of being negative and nasty and in a since they are. this has not been the most substantive campaign on major issues so far. what the romney people want to do is frame this campaign as a kind of chicago politics. they see in barack obama one of his strengths is his likeability. people may not be happy with the economy but they think he's likable. this is way to knock down, to diminish, to knock the edges off the likeability of the president by suggesting he's negative and angry. from the obama side what you have is an understanding there's a lot of people who want to vote against him, not so much for romney. that's what the polls show. fundamentally what that means is the obama people have to give you lots of reasons to vote against romney. that's the und
